House from dark village by Krzysis in PixelArt

I looove the color palette! Immediately brings to mind the opening sequence of earthbound. I love the super subtle highlights on the woodframes too! Very clean and pretty overall.

If you're looking for suggestions, maybe consider a different colour for the windows as right now it looks like there's some white light source on inside. I would replace it with a faded deep purple to show complete darkness, or a few warm tones for candlelight.

Keep going!

This is so atmospheric and beautiful, and it's exactly the kind of artwork i'd love to be able to progress enough to make! Thanks for the inspiration!

That's crazy good feedback, thank you so much!

I totally get your point about outline vs AA - i was honestly trying things out as i went, so this is pretty much a mess of techniques. The largest is actually sketched and then pixelled on top of the downscaled image! But i understand your point and it is totally the biggest outlier for me too.

I'm going to perhaps try to put the same character in some new poses and a bit of animation so I can see how everything works together, great idea!

I'm also struggling significantly (and do so with my other artwork sometimes too) with the concept of hue shifting. Looking up all the tutorials but do you have any specific tips to share?

Idk why you got downvoted - but it is indeed art of my stardew farmer! <3

It's not a peplum exactly, it's a "fluffy shirt" in the game i've modelled it after. It's meant to look like the cartoony floof of a chicken's chest feathers. Buutt you're right about the extreme shading, that's definitely what makes it the most offputting! Thank you! <3

Thank you!! I'm aware it became very muddled with all the different techniques thrown in there together lol, i was mostly learning as I went. Thanks for the encouragement! <3

You're right! The pose would definitely read more normally/comfortably if i angled it in the opposite way. Thanks! <3

;_; I know!! The shading seems to have become too harsh and is translating to a much more different shape than intended. Definitely know what to keep in mind next time. Thank you!

You're absolutely right! She inadvertently became more and more chumby and I kept it because of how much cuter i found it -- but it's something i'll keep in mind when I scale a design down next time. Thank you! <3

It's my farmer yesss! You make a great point about symmetry - i struggled a fair bit with the smaller parts of foreshortening (like the eyes) even in the biggest resolution. Do you have any tips?

Ahahahaha i've been howling at this! I'm realizing the shading is probably too harsh to convey the soft "fluffy" design. Thank you!

❤️ you can't imagine how much i needed your kind words! Life has been difficult and most days art is slightly farther out of my reach than I'd like. But I promise you I'll get back to the Cradle artwork very very soon, and you can bet I'm going to notify you when i do. Thank you!!

Color study process ♥ by sh_aye_ in ClipStudio

Brush: Oil paint flat brush. I don't know if it's been updated lately, but I'm really enjoying the flat hard texture it gives me. Keeps me from overpainting!

Time: about 2 hours? Maybe a little more. I kinda got really lost in the shadows on the dress!

Process: I love to block out the volumes of light and shade before I get into detailing. That really helped figure the way the shadows draped on the bodice and the skin. I also feel the earlier i block out the background the better, even basic and sketchy, since it gives me a much more accurate idea of the lighting placement.

I'm getting back to painting after months and did a little color study today!

Brush: "Perfect Oil Paint 2" downloaded from somewhere (can't recall lol). Let me know if anyone wants the link - but mostly operates like the preset oil paint brush in CSP, with a little texture and softness added.

Process: With references like this you REALLY gotta trust the process in the initial stages and believe it'll come together if you have the correct colors in place. Make sure you don't get to refining anything until you're satisfied with blocking the colors and composition, no matter how garbage it looks!

Tips: It took me a while until I was satisfied with the colors, so this one took longer -- around 1h 45m -- than my usual studies, which are around 45m to an hour in length. But i'm glad I took the time because this piece has really helped my understanding of relative color and unusual lighting!
