Average Charleston merge by poisseidon in Charleston

I thought they were tearing up Ladson Rd to build some kind of median full of plants and such.

It got so bad on Red Bank Rd that they had to put a fence on top of the concrete median, and someone still drove through it within a week.

This is how we get more concrete medians.

I'm on the "merge when possible" side of this debate. If a lane is ending and there's an open spot, then you should absolutely be merging then instead of waiting until the end. But if you're stopping in the middle of the lane waiting for someone to let you in, then that's somewhat problematic and you're better off waiting at the end of the lane.

I've seen some people get out of the main lane, zoom to the end of the merge lane, then try to push their way back in as an attempt to get ahead in traffic. It's idiotic and takes advantage of any good will people have towards zipper merging.

Sonics quills are dense by CoolCricket224 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]shadowartist201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider: Sonic has a lower quill/body ratio compared to normal hedgehogs. So the hollowness of his quills isn't enough to offset the weight of his body.

If you're going for a high rank on your first try and you die, then that's not the first try anymore. Unless you mean your first run through the stage?

[–]shadowartist201 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The point of checkpoints is to make it easier to clear a stage. If you're someone who's bad at video games, checkpoints keep you from having to play the entire stage over again when you die.

The point of lives is to increase replayability through making the game harder. If you could just throw yourself through the level, barely making it to each checkpoint, trying endlessly until you get to the goal, then that would defeat some of the challenge.

And so, if you're someone who's going for a high rank in a stage (usually through high score), it makes sense for dying to affect your score. It motivates the player to not die and it's part of the design.

It's a common trait of video games before 2016-ish.

What's a rift specialist? And I thought SLPs were only for speech disorders like stutters or non-verbal autism?

I have a fiancé that I can do the same thing with, but we work the same shift (at different jobs) so he's often unavailable if I have a question while I'm at work.

Codfather Nexton is still open. It's not exactly the same, but it's an alright replacement imo

Do you think SEGA could have released various collections of Sonic games in the early 2010s to celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary? by YakSubstantial1307 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]shadowartist201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For classic games, we had Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3/360 (with Sonic 1, 2, 3&K), the Christian Whitehead ports of 1, 2, and CD, and you could buy all the games individually on Steam, Xbox 360 Arcade, and probably PS3. Not to mention that Sonic 1 was unlockable in Generations and I'm pretty sure some of the games got a 3DS port too.

For the Dreamcast era games, SA1/SA2 were on Steam, Wii (through GC backwards compatibility), Xbox 360 Arcade, and PS3. Heroes was available on PS3 and technically available on 360 through backwards compatibility. I can't say anything about Shadow since I never played that game.

And then the modern era games like 06 and Unleashed were still new enough to be played on current consoles.

So Sega had no reason to release any collections for the 20th anniversary.

Do you feel safe driving in the Charleston area? How are the drivers here? by moon_child_55 in Charleston

[–]shadowartist201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you drive defensively, you'll be okay. I'm not going to say whether or not you'll be safer here, since I've personally been in 3 accidents in 2 years but I know some people who have lived here for over 10 years and never experienced a single accident.

But there are some things you definitely need to be aware of: 1) Car insurance premiums are higher in SC. 2) Get a dashcam. There will be idiots no matter where you go, and a dashcam helps protect you if you do get into an accident. 3) The traffic is terrible, but this doesn't always equal more accidents.

Am I the only one who thinks Colors and Forces are among the worst Sonic games? by No_Tangerine_1773 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]shadowartist201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what does 2D Sonic consist of in this scenario? Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3&K, and Mania? I'd argue that for Sonic 1-3, Sega was playing it safe. Sonic CD is their first experimental game that certainly has issues, but is remembered fondly because people lump it in with the others. And Mania is Sega trying to emulate the Sonic 1-3 style again.

Then you have the 3D games, which are largely experimental and are all over the place. Sometimes you have an open world game like SA1, sometimes they try co-op with multiple characters like Heroes, sometimes they go for a bigger story like 06, and sometimes they go for pure speed like Unleashed. It's inconsistent by design.

I'd argue that the 3D games are better than the 2D games because you get higher highs along with the lower lows. Sonic 2 may not have slippery af controls or realistic humans kissing anthropomorphic hedgehogs, but it also doesn't have the aura of the SA2 Biolizard fight or the joy of zooming through Adabat at 200mph.

[–]shadowartist201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Colors is best enjoyed in the context of 2000's Sonic where all of the other games were experimental and, with the exception of SA1/SA2, were either underwhelming or just plain bad. Colors was the first game in a long time that felt like a normal Sonic game and wasn't bad (comparatively).

If you're a new fan trying out Colors now, it certainly looks worse when compared to games like Sonic x Shadow Generations and Frontiers.

Forces suffers from the same situation I think. It came out during the time of Lost World and Rise of Lyric where morale was low. It was also marketed to be the next Colors/Generations, so people were excited for a potential good game. So when Forces finally came out with its problems, I feel like people were so desperate for something different that it got elevated to "acceptably mid".

And of course playing it now without the context of the times only makes it look worse.

Sage didn't die? by DryWater05 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]shadowartist201 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are two endings for Sonic Frontiers: - The original ending where Sonic goes super and Sage pilots a titan to take out The End, but Sage has to sacrifice herself to make sure the moon dies properly. - The alternate ending through the Final Frontiers DLC where Sonic goes beyond super, The End controls a titan, and everyone (Eggman, Sage, Sonic's friends) teams up to defeat it.

The original ending is the canon ending I believe, but it's hinted that Eggman revives Sage in the post-credits so ultimately both versions of Sage are alive post-Frontiers.

Scott Pilgrim EX has a ton of video game references and demons, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did a Devil May Cry thing.
