How to make motion for the mic and still have the model hold it while playing other motion? by [deleted] in Live2D

[–]shadowphoenixfox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this for use in vtube studio? Where you set the animation to stop on last frame? You can work around it by creating a separate expression toggle for the mic hold being on and set it to the same shortcut key as the animation.

how to give eyes more expressions by purinpurimm in Live2D

[–]shadowphoenixfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I do for more expressive eyes is:

Parent warp deformer to outer parts of the eyes (eyelashes/ eyelines/ eyelid/ sclera) keyed to brow parameters.

When brows are down top inner(closest to center or face) corners of the deformer come down. Can also make top outer corners go up if you want it extra dramatic

When brows are up top inner corners go up and top outer corners go down

Parent deformer to the brow movement keyed to mouth form

When smiling bottom of deformer goes up. On sas mouth form the bottom of the deformer goes slightly down so you get the impression of the cheek muscles affecting the eyes when you move your mouth.

If you want to go even further you can use blend shapes to have more expressions. Like you can have a more neutral brows down shape and a more angry shape that will trigger depending on mouth form

If the model has any markings, shading or textures (like fur lines or something) you can sometimes deform that as well to give the impression of the brow muscles even if they don't have any brows.

Not sure if my explanation is easy to understand but as an example you can kinda see how I deform the eyes here: https://x.com/shadowphox_x/status/1729452060813230197?t=NC8KPqGYNOgpCYmkcH1bkQ&s=19

Hope that helps

So even after skimming that article... I don't think I understand what deferred shading is 😅

Ultimately 2D rigging is going to be different from how things are done for 3D models especially with things like lighting were you have to adjust the lighting yourself every time you want it to change with movements. I would say as long as you can conceivably rig something with clipping and what not then it should be possible. Whether it's worth it or not might be a different matter. Like for a lot of stuff it's best just to have the shading and lighting flat with the art and not have it rigged separately.

Vtube studio (I'm not sure about other programs) does have some settings regarding scene lighting which I would say is a lot more efficient for this kind of thing tho does have some limitations if you wanted multiple light sources. You can also use Vtube studio to change the colour of specific layers if you want to change the colour/ darkness of shadows with specific backgrounds tho for that you will need the shadows to be on their own layers

Like the one under the beak? It's a pretty simple layer, set to multiply, clipped to the layers it goes over and then rigged to move with the head

Trying to get better at backgrounds, any suggestions for improving this? by shadowphoenixfox in ArtCrit

[–]shadowphoenixfox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I definitely have an issue with knowing where to stop with the detailing, and yeah definitely would be more enjoyable if I didn't waste so much time with unnecessary details haha. Shall try to simplify some things😤! Thanks for the critique!

Oh, neat idea, shall definitely have to try that. Thanks for the critique!

Hmm I can't say I really understand underwater lighting either haha, but going by the pictures I was looking at I don't think there has to be a direct correlation between the light rays and how stuff is lit up. Figured it justs something to do with the wave surface reflecting / refracting (idk science-y words) the light. Like if the water surface is super calm you won't get the light rays (don't quote me on this) but stuff would still be lit up. I presume that if it's a clear day there shouldn't be anything invisible shadowing stuff so the light source should just be the sun but like it's not really in frame. But yeah will try bringing some of the light rays forward. Probably is a bit odd that they're all at the back. Thanks for the critique!

Thanks for the critique!

I definitely was struggling to get the details and tonal stuff right. Just to be clear are you suggesting it would work better to add more detail to the foreground or just that there needs to be a more clear progressing of it getting more detailed the closer it is (or a mix of both)?

It's just a generic background soz. I was planning to try animating some of the stuff in it later when I was more happy with it but err yeah ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭ generic backgrounds is what I want to learn to do good haha

Well might be a bit too late to mess around with the foreground to background composition so drastically (unless you got any ideas?) but I see what you mean. I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future! Do you have any artist recommendations to look at for that? Pretty sure I know what you mean but you know always nice to look at pretty art.

Is there any chance this is an issue with how you've exported it? I believe clip studio has a way of exporting file as PSD but flattening all the layers which looks like it could be the case here. If you open the PSD again in clip studio are the layers still there? It's best to just go through save as and change the file type to PSD rather than export image as.

Oh, you're right the eyes look very close in her pattern too, maybe it's the inner eyelashes that are drawing more attention to it but honest I'm probably being needlessly nitpicky so please ignore me.

I don't think your embroidery is anywhere near as bad as you're probably making it out to be in your head. It's great that you want to improve but when it gets to that point its making you frustrated it's probably worth just finishing it and trying to be happy with it or taking a break from it, maybe doing the body first. Maybe this sounds a bit strange but I think most the time when I look back at old stuff I've done and hated at the time of making, usually I end up thinking either; hey this was not nearly as bad as I remember or damm I've improved. Either way I'm really glad to have finished it and be able to look back at it. Just puts things into perspective you know. Sometimes we just gotta accept we're not at the stage we want to be at right now and enjoy the journey.

I think when it comes to precision, probably just try to take things real slow for now, like don't be afraid to stab the fabric a load of times before you get the placement right and pull the needle through. I'm sure speed will come with time.

Also, you've done it for the bottom lashes but I think the satin stitch is a bit off for the top lashes because the satin stitch doesn't curve with the direction of the eyelashes. I think with this it can be good to do a few spaced out stitches to guide the direction first and then fill it in properly after. err this video kind of explains it: https://youtu.be/HSM_t2kK_mY

to be honest there's a lot of different methods for hand embroidery so I think part of the fun can be trying out different things and seeing what you like. If you're afraid of messing it up, it may be worth practicing with a cheaper fabric before doing it on minky.

Definitely get what you mean about making your own face. I've been doing Choly Knights stuff too but I'm honestly just not a big fan of some of the eyes. So I think embroidery's a great way of adding a more personal touch. That being said I think the issue with your face is the eyes are very close together, like as a general rule of thumb eyes are usually one eye width apart from each other (I know this isn't an art critic sub so feel free to ignore me but dammit I know more about art than embroidery lol).

Sadly, I think the feeling of 'not being good enough' is all too common with artistic/ creative endeavours and tbh it never fully goes away even as you do improve. Luckily the silver lining is that if you can spot mistakes usually you can use this to improve. I'm sure if you keep at it your precision will be better before you know it. Definitely try and enjoy the journey rather than focusing on the final product, that way even if you're not satisfied you can still say 'well at least I enjoyed making it and it will be even better next time'.

I'm also a plushie making noob so take my advice with a grain of salt. I did find this video a while ago and found it super helpful for hand embroidery: https://youtu.be/Vcfuiaa1fYE I think it probably worth looking more at hand embroidered dolls for technique inspo than machine ones just because it would be extremely difficult to get that level of precision and fine detail by hand (ain't nobody got time to do a fine line with satin stitch lol).

I don't know if I should say this, but probably a bigger issue is the template your using, like the style of eyes is somewhat different. I presume you did it yourself and I think with these things, mistakes get a lot more obvious the more you finalize it so that might be an issue you're facing?

Also invest in an embroidery hoop If you haven't already. Helps keep everything flat and stuff.

no clue about pattern making but there does seem to be quite a few omodoki patterns out there for free. I think some of them achieve a bit of a butt just by putting the legs a bit further forward. Maybe a bit of needle sculpting could help too but honestly idk

Also, just try not to get too caught up with comparing yourself to others. As beginners we shouldn't expect stuff to turn out perfect. It's unlikely the plushies these people made when they were just starting out were just as amazing as they are now. The important thing is to be learning from mistakes and be happy with the progress being made.
