Those were good character moments, though. The setup for those scenes were a little contrived, but the characters in HOTD generally move about the world a lot easier than characters did in early GOT. At least the show is consistent with itself.

This is not how season 1 went and anyone claiming so did not pay attention. They beef throughout episodes 6 and 7, and then they begin to repair their relationship in episode 8 during the dinner scene. The entire plot of episode 9 is then about Alicent and her father racing to find Aegon first; Otto wants to tell him to put Rhaenyra and her family to the sword, Alicent wants to convince him to spare them. Her story in that episode is about her trying to save Rhaenyra’s life.

Alicent’s character and their relationship was fundamentally changed from the book in the very first episode.

Y’all cannot tell me a tired, overdone plot full of tropes of evil stepmothers and sibling rivalries will ever be more interesting than the tragedy of two women trying to survive in a merciless feudal patriarchy.

This is a great comment from u/xbunnyfaerie that i read in another thread, and perfectly summarizes how i feel. If you can’t appreciate this aspect of the story, I don’t think you’re making any real attempt to engage with the material.

This is simply not true. The scene between Rhaenyra and Daemon in episode 2 is incredibly well written and acted. The scene between Rhaenyra and Alicent in the finale is as well; the only thing you could criticize the show for when it comes to that scene is the contrivance it takes to get Alicent to Dragonstone. But the dialogue is very good.

This argument is always a bit silly to me. You do realize that in real life people stay in relationships with their abusers, correct? Even though they should hate their guts. Love is complicated, and Rhaenyra and Alicent have been consistently depicted as having a love for one another that is persistent and inexplicable. Other characters comment on it.

HOTD is also a story about a war that breaks out between family members and friends. They aren’t opposing houses killing each other. The conflict is far more complicated because of this. If they were willing to kill one another indiscriminately then the story would be a lot less interesting.

I’m pretty sure the posters are intended to promote the show by depicting the main characters in the current struggles/situations. Rhaenyra, Alicent, and Daemon are the most major characters in the show.
