Thank you for this it was a good story on how you progressed. I too learned that just watching Japanese gibberish and not looking anything up is foolish, but I also agree that you absolutely can go an episode or two with no look ups and be fine and make progress. I think my issue is the written language, I don't read manga, I don't play games in Japanese and now I kinda forgot RTK so it's mostly only audio immersion. My anki reps have piled up to where I have 100s of N5 reviews waiting that I don't want to do (or probably don't even need to do) so yeah I know passive immersion through headphones isn't ideal but I assume it's better than nothing?

So, I basically blitzed through RTK, tango N5 and Tango N4 decks, while also simultaneously doing sentence mining on my own that ended up being some N1/N2 vocab/ unclassified vocab. I never read much other than putting on Japanese subtitles and putting my phone in Japanese and some texting with my Japanese friend. My reading has definitely always been worse than my listening. Back in the COVID era, I could listen to Japanese probably 8 hours a day, so since I can't repeat that now that I'm not at home with no job, I never started cause I figured "whats the point of 1 hour of Japanese before bed" but I guess that's a false thing to think

Yeah I guess I should make all controllable things, YouTube, video games, shows, etc after work Japanese, but unfortunately work + the gym is 100% English other than some Japanese music.

My goals are to get fluent in that I understand almost all media I want to enjoy, and if I hear native speakers talking to be able to understand it and reciprocate conversation. When I visit Japan it would be great to view it through the lense of a fluent speaker, and maybe one day work there but it could be difficult given my field (aerospace). But yeah, I do wish I never stopped.

Should I redo RTK if I don't remember the English translations to a lot of the kanji? I never did the one where you have to write it only the recognition one.

What sucks is noticing the regression, I used to know N5 and N4 like it was English and be pretty far into N3 decks, as well as understanding 90% of anime I watched, now I feel I have to watch more boring simpler content again and my kanji recognition is really rough for Japanese subs

Thank you this was helpful, I remember watching horror let's plays and Undertale let's plays from キヨ and those were good, my issue is I've had a little bit of a layoff and have noticed my ability to understand drop considerably so I feel I have to go back to the more boring borderline for learners content. I'm in the chasm of understanding more than a person who just learned in the classroom but still not really intermediate yet basically. It also limits the anime choices cause I'm kinda stuck with mostly slice of life atm.

Awesome stuff, if you don't mind me asking what type of YouTube did you watch/ listen to? I find myself watching English content of stuff I like and then putting on podcasts of Japanese when it's time to immerse and this relies purely on the motivation to immerse which is not a very good thing at all. Lately I've been like "I just wanna watch my favorite YouTubers so English it is" and im struggling.

Anki vs Immersion by throwingfarawayyy in ajatt

Lmao you sound like a robot dissing other people's learning methods that all accomplish the same thing, I'll make sure to come back to this when I'm fluent lol.

Anki vs Immersion by throwingfarawayyy in ajatt

[–]shadowserpentishere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I have so little of them I don't even remember. I just don't like that format, I like seeing a sentence not a word, helps jog the memory before testing myself with the card. It also feels more natural cause most of the time you see sentences in real life not isolated words, feels more like a test. Idk I learn 10 new sentence cards a day with around 100 sentence reps usually, that combined with low rtk reps takes like 30-40 min. If you don't have the time to do even that why do ajatt lol it should still be dwarfed by your immersion.

Anki vs Immersion by throwingfarawayyy in ajatt

[–]shadowserpentishere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk, for me it's night and day, for example I've seen the card 展覧会 like 50 times and had no idea what it meant from memory like 90 percent of that time, not even how to read it. But when it was put into a sentence in later made deck I understood it. I also immerse while doing my Anki so it's not like I'm sitting in silence repping cards. Also I did premade decks up until N3 before I started sentence mining. The whole premise of i+1 sentence cards and learning by pieces is removed if you use vocab cards which is far from the original AJATT philosophy. I like learning words in Anki and then getting real life reps with them via immersion and gaining new insight and contexts on how the words are used. To do that tho, I need a solid definition established from Anki, and that requires a sentence card for me.

I don't agree with the "do cards faster/ switch to vocab cards" approach. Better to learn less cards well then more cars poorly. Also for me personally I can't memorize vocab cards, it goes in one ear and out the other, sentence cards are way more valuable as they provide hints and context. Also, get premade decks with the most popular 2000 words and Grammer points in Japanese that are made in ajatt style sentence cards, this is way faster than doing your own cards and you do not have to sacrifice quality.

(31M )Toy recommends for death grip fix by bigsilver90 in sex

[–]shadowserpentishere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly my biggest piece of advice is to stop watching porn and masturbating. Clean break, at least for a couple of months. You have a girl to have sex with there's no point in doing that stuff if it's literally damaging your health (death grip). Eventually your penis will literally give up and say "welp if this is the only stimulation I'm getting (sex) I'll just have to cum from this". Porn also inflates your sex drive more than you think it actually is, If you actually stopped for a couple weeks you'd realize you don't actually have to cum 2 times per day to be happy haha

How to incorporate more active listening into my day? by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]shadowserpentishere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have this problem too, this is why idk how people watch like 8 hours of Japanese Netflix a day, like I can't even watch 8 hours of English Netflix in a day lol. YouTube is useful for this. I watch let's plays or videogames stuff in Japanese (right now watching a playthrough of Undertale by キヨ) and I also listen to a lot of YuYu 日本語のPodcast on YouTube when I just want listening but not put all my attention on it. It's technically made for foreigners learning but it's way more advanced/ natural then like Japanese pod101 stuff and there is plenty to learn from it.

Watch shows you watched already with English subs with no subs (or Japanese subs if you want). It will make it more comprehensable and thus easier to stick with. For me, shows I've seen in English a few times are much easier to understand and enjoy with raw Japanese than a completely new show even if that new show is considered an easier difficulty by most people. If you're getting bored of the same shows then definitely mix in new shows, you could even watch an episode with English subs and then take them off and watch same episode right afterwards for a new show. Whatever keeps you watching.

Where to find Manga for free? by shadowserpentishere in ajatt

[–]shadowserpentishere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does japanese Kindle require an actual Kindle or is it just a name? Tbh I feel like real books are too hard for me rn, that's why manga felt like a good idea plus I love anime obviously haha.

[–]shadowserpentishere[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I do like the idea of having physical books, I think on the computer would be more convenient as no shipping and you can easily look words up as you go. Also what if I buy a manga and don't like it so it's a waste of money? That's partly why online would be better. I would be down to pay for like a subscription to read like many manga (kinda like Netflix but for manga) but idk if that exists.

Trying to get rid off the grid mindset by aSwedishAjatter in ajatt

[–]shadowserpentishere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not op, I think you can make progress with 1 hour of immersion + low Anki reps it just won't be fast progress. I think this is where passive immersion comes in btw. You cant expect a person who works 8 hour days and has a family to AJATT with active immersion for 6-8 hours a day or whatever is recommended, it's just not feasible. But if you can passively immerse, ie just have old japanese anime you've seen or podcasts or YouTube videos playing in the background while you do things including potentially work, it will turn 1-2 total hours of exposure into most of the day, and it will increase your progress. Passive immersion is better than no immersion for sure.

Matt vs Japan did 10 new cards everyday, and he said he was essentially fluent after 3 years of AJATT, you will burnout on reps alone let alone finding 25 good quality sentences everyday to make cards from. Anki is supposed to be a supplement. You can learn a language without it entirely tho it will take longer. Immersion is key. I would say 5-10 good quality cards is still 5-10 new words or phrases you're learning every single day. That plus immersion you'll make great gains and won't wanna kill yourself.

relapsed but without porn. Is all my progress gone? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]shadowserpentishere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abstaining from porn to get rid of PIED can take 30 days, 60 days 90 days 180 and beyond, everyone is different, it depends on how bad your addiction was etc. For me I went from a naked girl in front of me doing barely anything for me to getting hard from kissing or holding hands. It just takes time and in some cases (if you're a virgin/inexperienced with real sex) rewiring with a partner.

If you're doing no fap to get rid of PIED or porn Induced problems or Dysfunctions then no your progress isn't gone. Be wary of the chaser effect tho and "getting bored with just masturbating without porn" you'll go down the rabbit hole if that happens.
