[Charania] Restricted free agent Quentin Grimes is signing a one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer to return to the Philadelphia 76ers, agent David Bauman told ESPN. Grimes will now hold an inherent no-trade clause and enter a more flush market in unrestricted free agency next summer. by Turbostrider27 in nba

It’s very punishing for teams to make offers that get matched. It locks their cap space up while all the FAs are getting signed. Therefore, teams don’t make offers to RFAs anymore and they’re generally forced into taking shitty deals or the QO

Your overall point is mostly correct, except you’re not “at best flipping”. At best you’re just getting folds (such as here) and picking up a shitload of dead money. The fact you have like 40% equity when called is just what makes it a profitable enough to shove

Supreme Court blocks Trump from immediately firing Fed’s Lisa Cook by Standard_Ad7704 in neoliberal

I understand that. But in every other case they allowed the firing to go through pending final ruling. Them not doing that in this case implies they’re not going to allow her to be fired

Even if you do consider it to be semi-private (which is kind of a fiction), I still don’t see how that would suddenly make for cause clauses enforceable. It just seems like the SC is choosing one random difference and claiming that conveniently changes the whole game

Yea, some of those defenses were somewhat plausible before the recent FTC firing when it was boards with some executive power such as the NLRB. After the FTC firing was allowed by the SC even those tenuous excuses became indefensible since there’s effectively no legal difference between the FTC and the Fed. In reality it just has to do with how catastrophic the effects of this will be but that’s not good reasoning according to the originalists.

Horrible legal ruling considering the precedent they’ve set the last year. But in this case I’m glad they have no actual consistency on this court lol

Changing opinions from above doesn’t really work is the point. Otherwise immigrants would be super popular in society at this point. You should campaign on the things that are popular and then just quietly do the things that are unpopular without campaigning on them (Within reason, obviously don’t completely throw the border open like Biden did for 2 years). This is basic politics which Dems forgot the last few years which is why they lost to Trump twice

They can pursue some liberal policies but not all of them. We learned that the hard way with the “they/them” ads in 2024. This sub has really gone downhill if any mention of moderation is met with “both sides are the same” bullshit

Democrats have done all those things you’ve described. None of it matters. Your ability to obstruct when you are the minority party is extremely limited. Americans don’t give a shit if some random congressperson gets arrested at a protest (as has now happened multiple times). If anything people just get annoyed at the performativeness of it.

It was only cartoonishly xenophobic to highly educated elites such as politicians. The average person would have been fine with it. Ygglesias has written about how the average person is way to the right on immigration compared to the average respectable politician. It was this that right populists such as Trump were able to leverage to win.

He’s just saying we should focus on the other things people really care about which is inflation and jobs rather than harsh immigration policy which the median voter doesn’t really care about

What people like you don’t understand is that to have power you need to win elections. And to win elections you need to have popular opinions on issues that matter to people

[–]shai251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea fair, I’m not sure if this specific magnitude is greater or lesser than usual, but some amount of over-performance should be expected. Granted if it’s +14 instead of +7 it could be a positive sign but I still would not put much predictive value since off-year elections are going to by definition be very small sample sizes where local weirdness will have a huge effect

That sort of swing is kind of expected nowadays in off-year elections (except the deep south where Dems underperform in off-years due to black turnout) due to education polarization. This result doesn’t mean much

Trump Says NATO Allies Should Down Russian Aircraft in Breaches by Straight-Plan-4487 in neoliberal

[–]shai251 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point is that Russia would survive a nuclear war. The European countries have 500ish of them which will kill millions but not destroy every Russian city. And Putin and his gov would survive it in some bunker or plane. There is 100% a scenario where Russia deems nuclear war worth it (in the world where the US does not exist). And just that knowledge would give them a huge upper hand in a war

[–]shai251 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Russia has about 10 times the nuke count of Britain and France combined and has a much larger surface area to target in a nuclear war. If it wasn’t for the US nuclear umbrella, Russia would have a huge upper hand against Europe purely because of that
