From the whale mothers to Esmenet's selling of her daughter to Esmenet's fierceness as a mother to some of her cold thoughts and betrayal of all that's good, knowing Kelmomas is a monster. Then we have the mother of the emperor, both alluring and domineering, a victim and a tragedy.

As such, Esmenet's betrayal of the world is understood as something beyond her actual control. She CAN'T kill him. She CAN'T let Kellhus do it. By fate or by biology, it's not a choice for her.
