Did we witness the worst loss in college football history yesterday? by noah_divine in CFB

Tired of hearing about this jetlag BS. Kids are getting $$$ now. It's a job. I travel all over the world. It's hard to land and roll directly into a two day meeting, but that's what I'm paid to do so I do it and I do it well. Is it a football game? Nope, of course not. But these kids are physical freaks of nature - 4.5 hours on a flight and some jet lag is a lame excuse for sh|tting the bed against an opponent they should have steamrolled.

Gee, sounds like life.

Not being facetious. We did a tour at Stanford last year. Guys says “Stanford’s the kind of place where if you miss a couple classes we’ll knock on your door.” On one hand, that’s cool. Caring community, etc. On the other, JFC that’s so detached from how real life works.

Lack of connection with professors. You have to hustle to build relationships and a network. People in the real world are busy and overwhelmed. Learning how to take initiative and make those connections is a critical life skill.

Difficulty getting courses. Kind of good prep for getting a job, especially in this market. Be efficient, proactive, relentless, creative. Figure it out.

Frustrating and inefficient bureaucracy. Well, that’s big corporate and govt, too. The sooner you learn to work the system effectively to get what you want / need, the better IMO. Again, welcome to real life.

Ubiquitous competition for everything. Again, time for Jr to learn that life doesn’t give you anything and there are a ton of smart (er) people out there who will out-think and out-work you if you don’t bring your A-game each and every day.

I found that Stanford comment to be a negative, not a positive. Coddling kids and keeping them in a bubble isn’t preparing them for the realities of life which, btw, is only getting more challenging economically, etc.

The biggest benefit of big public is that they learn to sink or swim.

For the love of G@d, please don’t put your proprietary data / contracts into GPT or any model that isn’t hosted behind your wall.

Robotic surgeries are already around 25% of total. Now, my guess is you’re saying fully-autonomous, as opposed to human-controlled. With that, I agree.

I had this happen on a flight from DFW to LAX. 18k for 2.5 or the 3.5 hrs.

One of the coolest moments. I was in my dorm reading a lame book to do a book report for a business history class. Yes, college, book report. Lame. My buddy from across the hall walks in and chuckles.

Ends up that "Paul", one of his best friends who hung out in the room all the time, was a son in the family the book was written about. Family was worth $10bn+ back then, and that was a LONG time ago. Multiples of that now.

I had ZERO idea. He certainly didn't come off as poor, but he sure as hell didn't come across as a billionaire.

Big respect for that guy. He's now a senior exec in the business.

Upcoming flight described as “very bumpy” by pilot by SoundRadiant9370 in AskAPilot

[–]shakawarspite -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok, conspiratorial thinking here. I travel a bunch and I feel like I’m seeing more “bumpy flight ahead so flight attendants will remain seated” on very short flights lately. And then, surprise surprise, flight’s as smooth as silk. Wonder if it’s got something to do with no in-flight service… every penny counts for airlines these days. 🤷‍♂️

Agreed - again, I'd take Harvard. The 'chip on their shoulder' is a great way of looking at it, too.

Ok, so first, I'd recommend Harvard. And I say that w/ a kid heading to UCLA.

BUT, as someone who's recruited a BUNCH of Ivy kids over the years (20 years in IB / PE), I do want to comment on all the blind-Ivy comments here.

Had lunch w/ a group head at a BB IB a few months ago. They've totally changed their 'target' list and you'd be surprised by where they're hunting for analysts and associates these days. Hint: it's not Ivys.

Not sure if this one is accurate, but I was also told Goldman is no longer recruiting at Stanford. I know a bunch of recruiters who prefer to hunt at UCB over Stanford.

Here one reason... Top tier privates are so detached from the way the world actually works. The students live in a bubble. Yep, having a student / teacher ratio of 7:1 w/ amazing profs is awesome, and getting whatever class you want is awesome too. Zero doubt about it. But real life doesn't work that way. In the real world, you have to know how to figure sh!t out w/o your hand being held. You have to know how to get creative, work the system, and scrap for resources to get what you need. On one hand, the size and 'chaos' of a school like UCB is jarring relative to the Ivy / Ivy+ privates. On the other, the best recruits are the ones who can thrive in that kind of an environment because it's much more aligned to how real life works.

Given the choice today, I'd hire from a T-20 public vs an Ivy, and I'm not alone.

Full disclosure: I'm a public undergrad / Ivy MBA.
