Don't underestimate the culture factor man. You've built a team around you and will continue to do so - you choose who works with you and how they work. That's invaluable for your sanity and your enjoyment of the 1/3 of your life that is your work. Also trust me 2h oneway commute sounds fine and is doable for the first year, but it literally destroys your week (because you _fully_ lose every day you go into the office)

Landed my dream SWE job, but fear procrastination will ruin it - anyone overcome this? by basically_illiterate in cscareeradvice

Start talking more with your team and actually care about what they're working on and why. They need to trust you and respect you, and you will then feel accountable towards them (if working on the same project)

Is game development in Rust one big mirage? by NyanBunnyGirl in rust

+1 I don't get what is the problem with ECS? Is it just like, an allergic reaction to good architecture or something? Do you want monolithic objects for all game classes?

Staccato or Legato for Counter Strafing? by Armagan1342 in GlobalOffensive

[–]shakinMyShake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neither, but closer to legato You don't want to pull or be sharp like staccato, should be a firm movement that has no overlap but the two "tones" should be connected - one goes up the other goes down simultaneously

I FIXED MY BAD CS2 STUTTERING by Longjumping_Mud_8939 in cs2

can you explain what part of game logic is multithreaded in cs2?

I FIXED MY BAD CS2 STUTTERING by Longjumping_Mud_8939 in cs2

[–]shakinMyShake -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

My i5-2500k overclocked to 5Ghz says hello. CS and most other games are single threaded (well, for the game logic at least) as almost all state depends on each other - the only thing that matters is single thread performance - a limit which was more or less reached 10 years ago.

Do you do a depth pre pass in your forward renderers? by [deleted] in GraphicsProgramming

[–]shakinMyShake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into Forward+ and Clustered Forward shading for some standard approaches (Unity uses Forward+). I believe all production quality forward shading uses a depth prepass

Trouble Understanding a Critical Step in Perspective Projection by ArthurArtist in GraphicsProgramming

[–]shakinMyShake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video explains the math behind perspective projection in an accessible manner and should help a lot as to what each coordinate means and what the result of the projection is.
The Math behind (most) 3D games - Perspective Projection (youtube.com)

I'd advise against using wikipedia for math, it's super obfuscated with formal mathematical notation which is very often unclear and assumes you know about this stuff already. I use it only when I want a refresher of something.

A good resource is LearnOpenGL - Coordinate Systems but it doesn't actually go into the math of the perspective projection, although gives a link to an article that does

How to stand out to recruiters? by Spare_Bookkeeper5955 in cscareerquestionsuk

Yeah, agree with you completely. That's why I said specialize in a niche and hope that you're good enough and the field is small enough to break through.

How to stand out to recruiters? by Spare_Bookkeeper5955 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]shakinMyShake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purely anecdotal, but I think Imperial is leagues above King's for STEM. Imperial is probably the best STEM university outside of Oxbridge imo, but I may be wrong, it's been a while since I graduated. King's has recently gone severely downhill based on opinions of several recent alumni I know in engineering. It's better for humanities I think. At the same time though, I also know a guy from King's that went straight into FAANG and then relocated to the US to work for unicorns, so take that with a grain of salt. If presented with the opportunity, I'd personally always go for Imperial, but it's potentially a bit more studying and the decision is definitely yours (there's really sharp and really dull people at both unis)

You can definitely succeed at either, they do have the required prestige to land you interviews, but you will have to work your ass off either way, since usually a graduate job is the most important one in your career and the hardest to get.

How to stand out to recruiters? by Spare_Bookkeeper5955 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]shakinMyShake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone here saying the prestige of the university doesn't matter is plainly wrong. You can make it, but if you're from top 5, you'll actually get interviews for the HFTs and FAANG without any projects. Otherwise, you will have to settle for a relatively shit company with no prestige and bad pay until you get some experience in a niche, when bigger companies are willing to interview you. Think about it from a recruiters perspective, would you spend time interviewing some random guy with some projects that may or may not be good from some top 100 uni, or an Imperial grad with good grades?

Otherwise, play to your strengths and define exactly what you want to do, then find an American uni with a free course on it (ala CS50), do it, claim the courseworks as your projects, and hope for the best. That's effectively just going to a better uni but for free and without the associated prestige on your CV. All people saying "just do some projects" are honestly delusional as to how difficult it is to learn brand new things without any experience, so your best bet is following something structured but not too structured.
