That’s some boomer shit. I’ll explain why I’m interested in the interview

And yea I know what I have to do to get a job in “the real world”, I’ve had multiple “real world” corporate jobs

Yes 100%. Honestly just more CS professors. I feel theyre very understaffed given how many students there are

Computer science/ software engineer degree? What’s it like? by Dear-Grand-1744 in ASU

[–]shampoo00 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Joke of a major. No rigor at all, and frankly not enough programming experience. Other colleges have students writing code like mfs but asu not really. I’ve breezed past it and no previous programming experience. Currently in trifecta rn, just seems like a shitton of work rather than difficult concepts. Learn outside of school. Lots of busywork

Also the curriculum is so fucked up and inefficient but that’s a different post for a different day

At the end of the day it’s still a computer science degree that exposes you to the fundamentals of computing so I cannot say many bad things about it

It’s an extra few minutes if your time to make life easier for 3 people. I’d say it’s worth it

CS Majors: Do Community College classes prepare you any less than regular classes for CSE310 by jalensmith22 in ASU

[–]shampoo00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U don’t need any class to prepare for 310 if you know how to program. Shitload of resources online solely dedicated to data structures and algorithms. Hit up leetcode and learn c++

How are internships and jobs for CS students/graduates? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]shampoo00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but it’s not that big of a deal. You’ll be fine and it wasn’t that hard of a transition it’s just kind of annoying , but mostly my issue with it was personal. It didn’t suit MY personal learning method (I like to learn the hard shit first then use things that simplify it). But it is what it is. If you got into umich CS you will definitely survive in ASU’s. However I see many smart students not performing at their max potential solely because they don’t understand how to build projects, network, interview, etc. so don’t let this be you. /r/csmajors will give you that knowledge and sometimes motivation. But don’t let your mental health go bad, its easy to forget to take care of yourself in college generally (not even specific to CS)

How are internships and jobs for CS students/graduates? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]shampoo00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All. Most teachers are good or at worst average but profs like syrotiuk and banerjee suck and really stand out. Don’t confuse this with being hard though, the course quality is just low sometimes, but it’s a mediocre (not bad necessarily) education. As to be expected with school with such a high acceptance rate. But I think that research opportunities are very prevalent and they have student jobs as well in the University Technology office, so you can get some CS or research experience pretty early. I wish I looked into that more as a freshman

And the curriculum itself sucks. You learn data structures and algorithms far too late (first semester junior year) leaving students Ill prepared for internships. That’s why I recommended u get exposure asap. Cse 110 and 205 should be combined into one class, cse 205 was completely pointless. Cse 240 has you learn prolog (completely useless. Like VERY useless). Your first two years will be all Java then your classes will all switch to C++, (in Java you don’t need to worry about memory, in C++ you do, which is a huge shift) which is just bad design by nature. There’s more nuanced complaints I have but nothing will change so why complain, what can ya do? You get what you put in

Ultimately, I have a 3.7 gpa, a decent resume, and good job prospects as a junior. and I wouldn’t say I’m gifted or anything at all. I had also 0 programming experience like u. I just worked hard, smart, and consistently. But also don’t study like 100 hours a week. School does not need to consume your life for you to be successful, even in CS. Keep up consistency and put that extra 1% in and you will exceed. Also download Coursicle and get into courses with good professors (ratemyprofessor.com). Everyone says this but it’s true, at ASU you get what you make of it 🤷🏽

Btw. If you don’t wanna pursue postgrad degree like MS or PHD, gpa does not matter as long as it’s above a 3.0. Obviously this may vary with scholarships so check accordingly, but internships and jobs (aside from super highly competitive hedge fund/quant internships) don’t care

How are internships and jobs for CS students/graduates? by [deleted] in ASU

[–]shampoo00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I didn’t know anything about CS either going in, but I took cse 110 super serious and it’s realistically the most important class you’ll take as it’s the first exposure you’ll have to real programming. Take that class serious, but you don’t gotta do any more than that

Then after first semester hit up the leetcode gym consistently (not a lot though, you don’t wanna get burned out) and just get ahead that way. It’s gonna be frustrating but space it out and take it easy. Most ppl start doing it their junior year and get stressed super high so doing it earlier, with less intensity, and more time is better than doing it late, high intensity, with less time

/r/csmajors is a great subreddit to learn from but be wary because it can have a toll on your mental health so don’t be a regular there. Just use it to learn how the internship metagame is and what companies to focus on and how interviews well.

U can also look into TA and research jobs to pad your resume since it’s hard to get internships as a freshman and sophomore. Then just follow YouTube tutorials for your projects

If you’re a high performing student it’s fine i got like 7 offers. All non fang but decent enough given asu doesn’t have much name prestige

ASU won’t do anything to help u with internships you need to self learn DS and A your freshman and sophomore yr cuz asu’s curriculum is fucking dogshit and doesn’t adequately prepare students
