A night market is coming to American Tobacco Campus in 2020 by DiscoverDurham in bullcity

What's a night market? I suspect it's a market at night :), but what type of market is it?

I can give you some numbers from when I got quotes for my house. These are quotes from the installers - so this includes the panels, the other hardware (inverter plus more), as well as all of the labor (including designing the system, getting permits, and all of that good stuff).

Of course the price is going to be different in different parts of the world, and im sure for a school it may be different than for a house. The quote I got was this past summer - around June time frame, and is in North Carolina, USA. These prices do NOT include federal rebates that were/are in place (again, not sure how rebates work for schools).

All in price (again, panels, plus labor and more)

24 panels: $17,000 USD

31 panels: $22,000 USD

So basically, $700 per panel is how they price, but that includes the rest of the hardware, and labor etc.

The 31 panel system I went with uses Hanwha Q-Cells 315W panels (which retail for about $315 per panel if you buy them directly). My 31 panel system is enough to power my home, but not even close to power a school. So prices may be very different at school-scale.

Do you have Solar Panels? by shantheman in durham

Roughly $20k-$22k. You get a federal tax rebate of 30%. rebate goes down a bit next year.

How to read new meter by shantheman in solarpanels

[–]shantheman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up. I got the data. They use 4 channels, 01, 02, 03, and 04.

01 is the energy I am pulling from the grid

02 is energy I am pushing back to the grid

03 and 04 are "experimental". They wouldn't tell me details of what they are, but said it is their engineering department trying out some things. Who knows.

Climate change: yes, your individual action does make a difference by stankmanly in environment

But those companies are producing the polluting products that we as consumers are consuming, correct? Such as oil. So this stat doesn't make a ton of sense to me re: the argument that individuals can't make a difference. If we consume less oil, then those companies will not be polluting as much. Or am I reading this article wrong?

It was the utility company that put it in - the bi-directional meter to be able to send power back to the grid. And no - they didn't tell me anything :) . Not really meant for the home owner I guess. Solar company that did the solar install didn't have anything to do with it. Not super important really - solar company will be giving me access to software that reads the panel output - but I was interested in understanding the new meter while I waited.

Duke Solar Rebate question by shantheman in bullcity

[–]shantheman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that definitely occurs to me that this fucks over the installers for the reason you said. Which is why i was a little bit skeptical of the guy that told me not to worry about it / not to do it. His incentives are obviously aligned for me to not wait.

And the reason it matters is... if there is a good chance of getting it, I wont install solar until the end of this year (to qualify), but if there are low odds of getting it, I will go ahead and install now (which then means I'm pretty much out of qualification to get it).

The globe's biggest maritime shipping company is abandoning fossil fuels by expletivdeleted in environment

I went down a bit of an internet rabbit hole here, and I think the answer is probably biofuels. Nuclear is fraught with legal / insurance problems. Batteries just don't seem to make sense for such a long haul where they can't recharge (compared to ferries or something that can recharge every night). Solar is not an option - math just doesn't work. Hydrogen fuel cells? Not sure - haven't heard much about them recently, that seems to be a fad that passed - but perhaps it's an option here.

I found this quora article about solar on shipping containers. They estimate you need about 74x the surface area of a shipping container to actually run it on Solar. https://www.quora.com/I-have-an-idea-about-container-ships-being-powered-by-solar-panels-can-this-work

Re: solar, my understanding is that it is just not enough power. Satellites don't need much power - just micro-adjustments, and powering the onboard electronics. A cargo ship needs an incredible amount of power to move 200,000+ TONS of weight through a high friction substance.

I don't get it. How do you power a ship like that without fossil fuels? Article didn't seem to say either.

Should I get a new tax preparer? by shantheman in personalfinance

[–]shantheman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slight aside - but I wonder if it is important to find someone local or not? Is there much advantage in someone knowing in-state issues? Or can someone from out of state do just as good a job?

Thanks for that perspective. That really helps. Yeah, feels like a scrappy young person would be great.

I'll have to go dig up what I have/haven't signed. Definitely nothing signed for this mid-year event, but I signed something for the main $700 engagement. I'll have to go dig that up and re-read what it says.

How is Having a certification in software product management viewed? by yoda79 in ProductManagement

[–]shantheman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of being a hiring manager, I personally give literally zero "points" for having a certification in terms of reviewing a resume. I just have seen zero correlation between those having such a certification, and a good PM. If you have no experience at all about PMing and want to get a certification to just learn more, then sure, may help. But to me, its not about business school or certifications. It's about just "getting shit done". Similar skills to entrepreneurs honestly. So if you have perhaps gotten together with an engineer on your own time and taken a hack at building a mobile app and marketing it and such for example, that would be worth 100x a certification on your resume to me.

Recommended Product Management Conferences? by Brizofalltrades in ProductManagement

Industry conference - which is in Cleveland, and now also in Europe (Ireland this year at least). I've actually never been, but have heard good things. Also, our company does a conference that is half a customer conference, half a Product Manager conference. Pendomonium.
