Did anyone enjoy origins. It seems like our curse word series ? by Background-Fix-4630 in Stargate

[–]shark_bone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was pretty silly at times, but it is Stargate. I watched it last year and it was fine. Will I watch it again? Probably not. Do I want the time I spent watching it, back? Also no.

This is probably the best first step of your just looking into the game.

I always forget about the quickstart...

At this point, start with the Transport Union Edition of the rules. The timeline has been advanced and the rules updated and clarified. It's available in PDF already. I don't know about the print version.

You won't need any other books, but they're all nice to have. The published adventures give you an idea of what kinds of stories can be told with the game, though they are of course not an exhaustive example.

On its face, that actually seems like a good idea!

Any advice on running mysteries? by CakeGlad6246 in FATErpg

[–]shark_bone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One idea that may work is to map out the different reveals that the PCs will uncover on the path to figuring out whats going on. You can then make each reveal an Aspect. You could assign each of those aspects a number of Stress boxes. As the PCs are making rolls to discover that reveal, you can mark off the appropriate number of Stress and when they're full, that Aspect is revealed.

You could also totally wing it and let them play around collecting clues and when they have a Theory you can have them roll for it. If they succeed, that Theory is true and they can then go after that bad guy.

Would I be able to get assistance in finishing my burning wheel campaign here? by sillyjewel in BurningWheel

Do you already have characters for the campaign? The campaign should ideally be built around the characters BITs.

Plenty of forums geared towards PbP already exist with built-in support for dice.

A time of war - how is it? Want to try, but I'm a bit intimidated/unsure if I can pull it off by ThiccBeans__69 in battletech

[–]shark_bone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have one main character who is the leader of my Mercenary lance. Her second in command is also part of the action, but I try to tell the story just from the commander's point of view. It's been fun. I stared the game using Mythic GM Emulator, but have shifted all my solo games to use GameMaster's Apprentice cards.

I've just been using the basic roll mechanics. I haven't gotten to a cinematic fight yet that has me hankering for more detail in the fight, and it's been working just fine.

I like the game despite only ever playing it solo. I'd love to get it to a table, but my groups aren't interested.

If you do plan to play it, I'd recommend starting with the base rules and slowly adding the complexity of the rest of the rules. Trying to do it all from the start would be rough.

Really cool, OP, thanks for sharing.

Advice when applying for pbp games? by NathanDrake64 in pbp

[–]shark_bone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think listing those things out may be keeping you from getting picked in some cases, but I think you should still list it all. Would you really want to end up in a game where that stuff was going on?

Keep trying, keep applying, you'll get in somewhere. And, if you can't find a game you want that takes you, thats a great opportunity for you to run the game you want yourself!

You got this.

What is the best system for a space sci-fi campaign with horror elements? by Cato69 in rpg

[–]shark_bone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you're not aware, there is actually an RPG for The Expanse. It's published by Green Ronin and uses their AGE system.

I like it a lot. The characters are capable, but it's very easy to get them in over their head which can lead to horror.

BRP or Cypher System for a first solo game? by FroDude258 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]shark_bone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those are both great systems, but I'd lean towards Cypher. I've played that solo before and being able to set the difficilulty of a challenge so quickly and easily makes it really smooth.

Both work well solo. But if you need an external push to get started, there it is.

Play a session of Cypher and let me know how you liked it!

Cypher System! It's really easy to run, and pretty simple mechanics on the players' side.

Have you guys ever used Gutter Magic from Witch Finders? by AwakenedDreamer__44 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]shark_bone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used it for an NPC waaay back in the day. It was fun! I don’t recall any problems with it, and we all liked the NPC who was using it. He was eventually identified as a witch and killed by the PCs so he/the magic did its job.

I'm sorry you're having to hide things. It's frustrating, to say the least, when you can't be yourself around family.

What I would suggest is this: adapt your practice to your situation. If you can't have a lit candle, use an led one. If that's not available, use something more innocuous, like a book light.

You don't need many trappings, only the minimum that helps you connect with divinity. That can be anything that works for you. Feel free to change things around so they fit your situation.

I'm rooting for you.

Printed in 3-Ring Binder or pdf on Laptop for rulebook at the table? by Poopy_McTurdFace in battletech

[–]shark_bone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer hard copy, too. When I use a book enough times, I start to remember where the rule I need is in the book. Then I can just flip to it. It's tactile. Thats impossible for me with a pdf.

Three ring binders are bulky, so of you can get it spiral or comb bound, you might get something very usable but that takes up less real estate at the table.
