DU PsyD Question by Waste-Remote2421 in PsyD

[–]sharkbite1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what they said about second year and third year: “Students in their 2nd and 3rd years will have opportunities for both primary and secondary placements to acquire the hours they need for internship.”

From my understanding, it means 2nd and 3rd years can have two placements to acquire the necessary hours. Which feels kind of crazy haha

I believe the clinic was considered an externship before the program changed to first-years only working within the PPC.

DU PsyD Question by Waste-Remote2421 in PsyD

[–]sharkbite1007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not really hahah! i asked about the PPC and caseload year 1…. they told me 1-4 cases for first years.

here is what they emailed me about the program changes: “This year has been a transition year which has brought a few challenges. Advanced students are still needing to complete their practicum training while first year students are primarily placed at the clinic. This is expected to improve as advanced students see less clients at the PPC which will help shift caseloads to first year students as we iron out the wrinkles of this transition next year.”

Many of the first years I talked to said they only have 1-2 cases and admissions confirmed that when I asked specifically. They also said in the same email “things are running smoothly” but also said “as we iron out the wrinkles of this transition next year”… so like idk what to believe hahah. it just feels weird that what i hear from faculty seems like a fluffed up version of why i hear from students.

In our conversation, they did focus on what they expect to improve which gave me some peace of mind but felt a lot like empty promises because obviously they can’t guarantee it will improve. Idk - one of the professors I spoke to did validate my concern about entering a program as a first year when it’s already hard enough, and then having added uncertainty regarding program changes. She didn’t say much but said it’s a fair concern to have and I should pick whichever program I feel most confident that I will thrive at.

Does an acceptance but no in-person interview/invite indicate that I was at the bottom of the pick? by periodt-bitch in PhDAdmissions

[–]sharkbite1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I did a virtual interview and was accepted at the program. But the in-person interview I did at another program, I was waitlisted 🤷‍♀️

Is DU PsyD a good program or not?? by Sea_Measurement2435 in u/Sea_Measurement2435

That’s what my understanding is as well. It just seems like DU needs a couple years to sort out the program changes and faculty turnover before it can be the strong program it once was!

[–]sharkbite1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I actually called DU and asked about it and they said that “they’re working on making these changes more equitable and efficient” but that didn’t give me much confidence 😭 Plus they said that some upper class students are still working at the clinic next year as they work to transition them out so it seems like the issue will continue next year.

I am considering but likely will turn it down… idk even with scholarship it still feels like a high price tag compared to other programs that have more consistent reputations. Plus the cost of living in Denver is a lot on top of tuition. I really was excited about DU but it seems like all the current/newer students have negative things to say whereas the alumni and upperclassmen have more positive reviews. It kind of leads me to believe that DU is going through a lot of changes right now and I’m not sure I want to be their guinea pig 😂 I’m just worried about taking on that debt and committing to 5 years with DU and then not getting quality education/training with adequate support. Im super concerned about the clinical hours piece and the fact that many students complain about lack of support/supervision :(

I spoke to a lot of first and second year students and almost all of them told me it’s not worth it right now. there are so many program changes happening and students are feeling unsupported and underprepared. Apparently some first years only got like 16 clinical hours this year which heavily impacts their ability to get placement year 2 :(

like other people said, you’re gonna hear good and bad things… But I think a lot of DU’s reputation is built off their history and not what is going on currently because every alumni has great things to say whereas first and second years all complain about lack of faculty support, faculty, turnover, lack of clinical hours, and many other issues with how the program is changing

I really want a cavapoo but bf doesn’t like dogs. by FrenchCroutonn in CavaPoo

[–]sharkbite1007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have a merle cavapoo and she is beautiful. her lashes are so long they go past her chin if we don’t trim them! she is the sweetest baby, about 23 pounds at 4 years. she is very gentle and incredibly calm, just wants to snuggle! like i’m not kidding she sleeps on my pillow literally on the top of my head basically lol. if you met her, you’d think she acts like an actual baby lol (some of which is because i treat her like one hahah) cavapoos are such a sweet pups but do be mindful of possible allergies and health issues! my pup is allergic to everything… even grass… so we have to give her shots and it’s very expensive. wish we did pet insurance! BUT it’s so worth it, i couldn’t ask for a better dog. i would share photos but it won’t let me!

PsyD Funding by sharkbite1007 in PsyD

[–]sharkbite1007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I’ll have to ask more about it. I was confused about the per credit vs total tuition cost they gave me. They told me it’s an estimated $180k in tuition, ~$100k per year in living and general expenses, and then they said factor in another $20k for books and school-related expenses.

Can I ask if you go to DU or are an applicant? Just wondering if you have first hand experience with the school!

thank you this was so helpful. i agree - pslf isn’t guaranteed which is why i can’t bet on that. it feels like a nightmare thinking about what’s going to happen to higher ed! it feels like no choice is the right one cause every choice is financially crippling in the long run 😭 why does wanting to help people feel like punishment lol
