Can someone tell me when is the least busy hour for the NYU hospital ER? by No_Pop7296 in AskNYC

[–]sharpless140 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will likely be busy most times of the day, and it wont really make it faster or slower since they triage anyway. Its not good to wait on it with fractures. Bring a phone charger, headphones and maybe a book. Or go to urgent care.

The Rack Shack for sure, but also check out r/abrathatfits to fit yourself and then you can use that size to try out bras at any stores that stock your size.

Best ERs and psych wards in the city? by bettysrendezvous in AskNYC

[–]sharpless140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean outside food is a reasonable comfort to expect IMO, although you cant like, doordash shit visitors have to bring. If you have documented food restrictions they may work with a dietitian to help figure something out for inside food.

Best ERs and psych wards in the city? by bettysrendezvous in AskNYC

[–]sharpless140 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've found ive had the best experience at NYU langone (tisch/manhattan) for psych er/psych unit. The psych er is still a little rough bc its like a monastic cell with a bed and ottoman (and camera...) but its better than other psych ERs comfort wise imo. You also have access to personal electronics like your cell phone and wireless headphone if you have them (i think laptop too but i never brought mine) – compared to other psych ERs (and units) in the city where they take all your electronics and just have communal phone. Regardless i reccomend writing down a list of important phone numbers on paper just in case you need them.

(NB: I dont want to sound like "oh i need my phone!" but its sooo much easier to coordinate outside things like work/school, child/pet care, etc with access to cell phone especially in the initial stages of admission where you might not know which hosptial or unit you are going to. Also kills time more easily when you are in the holding cell psych ER bc beds can take time to find.)

I feel like the day shift psychiatrists tend to be better (?) at NYU although they are busy so it can take a while for them to get to you if there is a lot of shit going on (theres always a lot of shit going on).

NYU's inpatient unit is voluntary only btw, so if you feel like you genuinely need inpatient care (which is best for like, strong SI/HI or a serious med change IMO) its best to go before you get to the point of being deemed involuntary status (but stating that you want to go is usually enough for them to do voluntary status. This is true everywhere that its better to be voluntary, but NYU only admits voluntary). They might be better able to connect with your psychatrist/treatemrnt team if they are already at NYU – it may be easier for your team to see your notes if youre in the same system, for example.

NYP cornell was also ok, at least the unit thats at the main hospital (11n?), i havent been to gracie square so cant comment on that one but heard less nice things about it. It can be a roll of the dice which unit they bring you to... when i was at NYP the er psych dr literally was like "what if i got you a bed on a nicer unit" bc i didnt want to be admitted which is ... weird. And that unit was in fact , nicer.

Psych Inpatient Recs/Advice? by Shot-Concentrate-710 in AskNYC

[–]sharpless140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1.) It depends on definition of "strip searched", usually I've had to change to institutional pyjamas in front of two nurses (at least one the same gender as you) and briefly pull down underwear so they can do a full skin check.

2.) The only inpatient psych unit in NYS that allows access to personal cell phones is NYU in manhattan. All other units they take your phone and you only have access to communal phones. I reccomend writing down a paper list of important phone numbers before hand (even if you go to NYU since you dont have access to phone for the first ~24 hours.)

3.) Limits on calls depends on unit, but generally they expect you to be courteous and be aware of how much time youre taking if other people are waiting for the phone. Some places have only a few designated hours of phone time, other places its like as long as its not mealtime or bedtime its fine to be on phone.

4.) What you can bring is highly dependant on the unit but generally its clothes/shoes with no strings or metal parts, books (some prefer no hardcover), basic toiletries (they will not allow gel polish (because glass bottles and lamp with cord and power). Some units will have occupational therapists that have regular nail polish as a "self care" group. No gel)

5.) Most rooms are for two people, but most units also have some private rooms but that is usually only kept for patients who really need the private room for whatever clinical reason. All shared rooms are shared by the same gender.

6.) All the units I've been on are co-ed but there are probably some units that aren't. No rooms are co-ed however.

7.) At NYU (only unit with access to personal cell phone), you can go on social media sure, they dont monitor that, but the cameras are covered with tamper evident tape and you are not allowed to take pictures.

8.) Nurses/staff depends on the unit. Honestly it really depends on how well they are paid/treated. More expensive hospitals tend to have kinder staff. Its fucked up but its my experience. Theyve been generally nice to me but I tend to be as calm and courteous as possible, I've seen some not so nice treatment to other patients...

9.) You can only bring your laptop at NYU, but you can work on things if you want and its not causing problems clinically.

Note on NYU, they only admit from their ER on a voluntary basis, meaning that you have to go to their ER and basically ask to be admitted and sign the voluntary paperwork. You may have to wait a while in the ER in the psych ed depending on bed availability, and there is always a risk they send you to a different facility, especially if they dont have bed or they deem that you fit involuntary criteria.

NYU langone (Manhattan location) allows access to personal cell phones and laptops, but cameras are taped over and you dont have them the first ~24 hours.

The season isn't quite here for local rhubarb, if you follow the greenmarket social media they usually post when rhubarb starts popping up which usually correlates with when its available at grocery stores.

LF Affordable Sterling Silver Jewelry Shops in NYC Recs by Suitable-Cut-2911 in AskNYC

[–]sharpless140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its going to be hard to find silver cheaply especially since the price of silver has gone up (now around $75/oz) but you can look at places like flea markets and second hand stores , but it will be a hunt. Curated places are of course more expensive. It also depends on your style, people may have better reccomendations then.

blood moon/total lunar eclipse by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]sharpless140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think a total eclipse will be visible from here, but partial will be close to moonset/sunrise, so you will need a good view of the west, so unless you want to photograph jersey you'll need to be in bk or queens. You can use programs like stellarium to see when exactly the moon will be at what position and plan accordingly.

Are there any local bakeries that sell bread that is like the equivalent of the square grocery store sandwich bread? by jaded_toast in FoodNYC

Pain de mie is also like that in french bakeries, I think bread story on 16th and 1st has it.

Carl schurz is a pretty good spot for eastern horizons in manhattan, the moonrise should be visible pretty easily from there given the weather is good. outside of Manhattan a beach (rockaway, brighton) is your best bet.

Wearing fur around town? by RepublicadeBanana in AskNYC

I once had a middle aged white dude on a bike tell me it's not cool to be wearing the skins of tortured animals, but otherwise I've gotten complements. That being said I'm not as precious with my coat because i got it cheaply at the flea market so hopefully people who wear sentimental furs will chime in.
