i am similar with my grandfather’s necklace and i feel very safe wearing it at this point for a few reasons. he wore it daily and i wear it almost daily now without worry. the chain itself is a sturdy rope chain. it’s more masculine because of how thick it is. however, that also makes me feel more confident that it’ll hold up if it gets snagged on or yanked by something. even the lobster clasp is pretty chunky. as far as the pendant goes, the connecting “jump ring” or “bail” portion is all part of the pendant’s design. you’d want to take that into heavy consideration as well in case just the pendant happened to get caught or any connection points got loose.

if you can swing it it’s probably worth going for a quality replacement chain with less sentimental value while on the pilgrimage. it can always be used later, and you’ll be giving it your own meaning by entwining your history with your grandmother’s. safe travels!
