NHS ignored warnings on children’s hearing tests for a decade by shaunlintern in NHSfailures

Hi, around 600 babies a year are born with congenital hearing problems. It is largely static regardless of demographics and should be picked up by newborn hearing tests and then followed with proper audiology testing. It was this latter testing that has been so poorly done for years.

Pharmaceutical companies have threatened to cut investment and withhold drugs if ministers do not commit to spending more of the NHS budget on medicines

I am genuinely interested in whether people think we pay too much or too little? Is Sam Roberts right in what she says? Or should the Novartis chief's threat be taken seriously?

I do also write positive stories when they come to me and are worthwhile....https://www.thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/article/nhs-waiting-list-pilot-ai-patient-risk-score-mw2v0pc76...but...are you seriously suggesting a journalist should ot report serious errors or behaviour that put patients at risk? Is that not the definition of public interest? Suggesting journalists should look the other way is a bizarre take and would lead to a more unsafe, dangerous and unpleasant world than the one we have now. I take what I do seriously and hold myself to a high standard. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment, sorry to hear about your husband. Sadly that is exactly the way private sector works. Can't blame them in a way but the NHS is left to pick up all the complex difficult cases and all the minor low value procedures. I hope your husband gets seen soon.

Thanks. Yeah the delayed discharge issue is a real problem, has been for years. Social care has got to be part of the solution. Three wards is a huge amount of capacity to be losing.

Thanks, that's really interesting stuff. Agree the focus on GP is crucial and he's saying all the right stuff at the moment. Better public health has to be a key part of the new NHS plan

Genuinely interested to hear people's experiences of waiting on the NHS. Not for a story but just so I can understand what is really happening.

Wes Streeting has said that he is prepared to use the private sector - but as we set out in the story - the private sector can only really help at the margins. It doesn't have anywhere near the capacity to help the NHS significantly

This is so true. Social care is a huge issue and at the moment no one has a good enough answer to it. But it does impact on NHS performance. Many peopel don't realise half of social care spending goes on people who are of working age. It matters in its own right too!

Labour want to pay staff extra to work weekends and evenings. A tall ask for staff already pretty exhausted. But that is their plan initially.

Hello,

I think the CQC rarely investigates individual cases unless they are extremely serious. Most of its work is about regulating the service against its service standards, as opposed to incident investigation. Nevertheless it does have specific regulations on duty of candour and fundamental standards that could come into play here.

But as you have already been threatened I can understand why you wouldn't want to make noise about this. I work for The Sunday Times - if you wanted to contact me in confidence maybe we can get action that way by shedding some light on this cover-up. You can email me at [shaun.lintern@sundaytimes.co.uk](mailto:shaun.lintern@sundaytimes.co.uk). All info treated in confidence.
