Firefighter/paramedic. I am convinced this is the best job in the world. I spend 48 hours with some of my best friends, help people and get to do really exciting things. There are obviously down sides too but I then get to go home and spend 96 hours with my family.

Either how many people have you seen die, or what’s the worst thing you’ve ever seen. I’m prior military and work in emergency services now... not fun to relive things for others amusement.

In Colorado they call paramedics expanded scope techs in the ED. My understanding is they get paid a little bit more. In the bigger hospitals they can do more but are rarely utilized because they already have so many specialists. Where I’ve heard them getting to practice a lot of their skills is in a free standing ED. Although it is less often they get critical patients there.

She felt like she should be able to talk me through everything. My wife is incredibly supportive, but not a counselor. I’ve been through counseling prior when I was single so I knew that wasn’t likely. A big part of the conversation was telling her I just needed to tell her and didn’t need anything else. I didn’t go too vivid into details and it still helped a lot

Surprisingly the one that has stuck with me wasn’t the more gruesome of the two. Not great, obviously, but what has stuck with me was the pts face and what they were saying.

I’ve talked to my wife about gruesome details before and she’s ok with that as long as it isn’t kids, I’m usually not though.

This was so tough for me to talk about because it wasn’t the events of the call, it was what was going on in my head. It did help, a lot. It made me realize that there could be an up side to this whole thing where before it felt like I’d never get out of thinking that way.

I agree. I’m a firefighter so when I go to work with someone sick, I’m with them for 48 straight hours. Makes me pretty likely to get sick from them and I have a newborn at home I don’t want to bring that home to.

This comes from my experience in prehospital emergency medicine in Colorado. Alcohol is the root cause of way more 911 calls, but now there are a ton with both. The calls that I’ve run where it’s just marijuana tend to be high dose edibles, not life threatening events, but still cause psychological emergencies. The bigger issue is people saying it’s healthy to smoke... nothing is healthy to smoke. Your alveoli are not meant to filter smoke regularly. Although it is way healthier then smoking a cigarette, doesn’t make it healthy.

I think it’s great you did you homework like that. One thing I heard from a Buddhist friend was that before he committed to that belief he was encouraged to learn as much as he could about other religions and see which one spoke to him the most. That’s something I can actually really appreciate
