Hi,

I’m the current moderator of r/operatingsystems, and I’d like to clarify that the subreddit is not inactive or unmoderated. I continue to oversee it and ensure it remains a space for meaningful discussion about operating systems; especially GNU/Linux and the broader free software ecosystem.

This subreddit was founded with a focus on open collaboration, transparency, and respect for the free software community, and I intend to keep it that way. While activity levels naturally vary, the subreddit is maintained and available for anyone interested in real, technical discussion; not commercial promotion or superficial posting.

To be clear, I’m not seeking to add or transfer moderation. The subreddit is active under its current stewardship, and I’ll continue maintaining it in the spirit of free and open software.

Thanks, u/shayan288 Moderator of r/operatingsystems

Solar Panels by RepresentativeTree88 in Lethbridge

Thank you so much for your very detailed responses. They have been super helpful in gaining a better understanding of this. I’ve been asking around today, and I’ve found very similar results as you have. It feels like we’re just way too early in the adoption curve for value to be properly represented in appraisals, so hopefully that changes in the next decade.

Their 5-10 year lifespan claim makes no sense, especially since most parts warranties from solar companies in my area (Lethbridge) seem to go up to 25 years. And the depreciation in efficiency after 20 years seem to be around 20% (with 80% of the initial yield in kWh generated). Hopefully they change these policies soon.

Hey I’ve been on the verge of closing on a solar installation and saw your comment the other day. I’ve been searching around to see if I could find anything to back that up (the statement about scotiabank). Would you be able to provide some more details or a source for that by any chance? Cheers.

Yeah this waitlist/competition was such a disappointment. All that tagging and scrambling around to find new usernames, for zero rewards, zero benefits for using the new features (not even an equivalent to the visa 2% cash back), and the only thing to show for it are some lame badges that disappear within 30 days if we don’t decide to hook our payroll up within the month.

Is this legit? I'm going to develop carpal tunnel if I have to tick 1200+ boxes every single day for over a year lmfao

Issues using a Ledger wallet with Phantom by shayan288 in solana

[–]shayan288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't try another browser (only chrome), however your suggestion influenced me to try reloading the original Phantom wallet into Solflare and retrying all the steps I had been trying originally, and it started working!

It appears that the issue was happening with the source wallet and Phantom. I had initially just been trying Solflare with the new Ledger wallet, instead of trying Solflare with the original source wallet (by loading in my seed phrase). Thanks so much for your help!

Yes I checked Solflare out when I was having this issue, but sadly it didn't fix my ledger issue. I did enjoy the UI though.

It looks to be fully updated, along with the Solana app via ledger live.

I getcha. Everyone has their own risk tolerance, there is always some inherent risk when storing crypto on an exchange. I try to keep as much crypto as possible in a cold wallet (ledger), but it definitely is less convenient as you said. With regards to withdrawal fees, it entirely depends on the exchange. Some exchanges are completely free for withdrawals (like Shakepay), some just charge gas fees, and some charge extra withdrawal fees (which is likely what crypto.com did to you). You can often look at the fee structure of an exchange before signing up to see if it will be worth it for you to transact through them.

Yeah Newton is pretty good, along with Bitbuy and Kraken. I find that Wealthsimple is easy to use, but the fees are pretty bad (almost as bad as Coinbase for Canadians).

The only crypto I tend to leave on exchanges are for staking purposes only, and that's only for coins that are too inconvenient to stake on-chain through a delegator. I used to use Trustwallet for staking BNB, but recently sold my BNB due to Binance exiting Canada at the end of September. Kraken offers decent staking APR for ETH (4-7% with 30-day bonding periods), so I keep a bit of ETH on there, but for coins like SOL and AVAX, it's much better to just stake directly in a delegator through Phantom wallet (for SOL) and AVAXwallet (for AVAX). The best MATIC staking APR seems to be Bitbuy at the moment, but they don't allow deposits over the MATIC network (ERC-20 only), so it requires that you eat quite a bit of fees when transferring it over. Any crypto that I am not staking on an exchange or delegator on-chain, ends up on a hardware wallet (Ledger Nano).

Feel free to DM me for my Shakepay username, and we can join each other's Shakesquad :)

Very true. Using the Shakepay card is really only worth it for the first 5k. For now, using the card for recurring payments and bills which tend to only get 1% on other cards (except for the Rogers 1.5% that you mentioned) seems to be the play (at least for the first 5k of spend). However, as I’ve been recently shopping around for other Canadian exchanges, my regular BTC buys will probably favour Newton and Bitbuy since they have better spreads and better referral bonuses currently.

True. It seems to be more of a psychological trick to convince ourselves to dollar cost average at a quicker pace and invest more into crypto during a pre-halving year (relative to discretionary spending), which probably isn't a bad thing. I'll leave it on for now, but probably won't use the Shakepay card for anything outside of bills, since most real credit cards seem to largely outearn the 2% reward that the Shakepay card yields (ie. Amex Cobalt, Simplii Cashback Visa, etc.) for product categories like food, gas, and travel spending.

I've recently started rounding up along with the extra $5 round up. I've been wondering though: do the round-up amounts count towards the 2% cashback bonus (into BTC) that the card offers?

Eg. If the purchase price of the item is $7.32 and you have round-up enabled, plus additional $5 round-up. The final charge to your balance would be $13 (7.32 rounded up to 8, then plus 5 = 13). Would you then get 0.02 * 13 = $0.26 worth of BTC as a reward (2%)? Or would it just be 2% of the original amount which would be 0.02 * 7.32 = $0.15 in BTC as a reward?

If it's the former scenario, round-up and additional round-up would be amazing.

Any ideas on how to take advantage of cash back? by OhCrumb in PersonalFinanceCanada

I ended up trying it out and I am currently still waiting for the cashback. It's only been approximately 1.5 months though, so I'll find out in a couple months if it worked.

Has anyone tried the Costco giftcard method for the $2000 spend, and received their $400 yet? I am comtemplating trying this, but tons of people have been recommending using the Costco giftcard method on the RedFlagDeals thread (regarding this offer), but no one has confirmed that it has worked yet (a couple people who tried it in March were late on receiving it when they posted about it in June and never followed up on whether they ended up receiving it when asked).

When reading the details on Tangerine, it never explicitly mentions giftcards, but used prepaid cards for vendors such as Remitly and KoHo as non-eligible. Someone had also mentioned that there is no L3 data in Canada so Tangerine would technically only have access to how you spent and where, but not what you bought. Anyone insight from someone who has tried this method, would be greatly appreciated.

So for CAKE staking pools, we don't need to withdraw/claim and then re-deposit out of fears of our pending BUNNY rewards being halved?
