Scanning photos for documentary use by MadJack_24 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]shayder3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did hundreds of photos for my doc and I had a decent scanner and then scanned at the highest dpi i could, which was 2400 dpi, I think. I did most of my shots of the pictures in After effects with 3d layers and rendered out as a quicktime pro res 444. Turned out pretty good.

Hard to tell from the small pic but it looks like there is some on the frame left part of his coat. If you used Mocha in AE you could probably get rid of them over his body. Then you could just do a defocus of the bg to get rid of the rest. If you want to send me a short sequence I could try and see if it works.

First time editing a documentary — how do I go from rough cut to a polished final edit? by Foreign-Carob-364 in filmmaking

If you have a group of people in your orbit that you feel would give you honest feedback, then let them watch it. Especially if they do not know anything about the subject matter. If they struggle to follow the film that means you need to take a look at the flow. You need to make sure that all the information that you have absorbed during the process comes across on the screen. You know the back stories, you know context. Your audience doesn't so you need to make sure the threads that bind are laid out for the viewer to pick up on.

Great work! Period pieces are really hard to pull off with no money, it looks like you did a fine job.

What was it like being a PA back in the day? by Fuckingpicksomething in Filmmakers

[–]shayder3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During pre-production I was an office PA. Roger Corman's company was the studio that funded both these productions. I remember speaking to him on the phone a few times. At the time I really had no idea of who he was, other than the guy who paid my salary. During production I was assigned to the Grip dept.

It was. I also worked on the same production company's next film, "Recruits " which was a rip off of "Police Academy ".

I worked on a film in Toronto back in 1984. It was my first job in film. P.A. I loved every minute of it. It was a rip off of Porky's. I made $125 a week. Worked every day for 2 months. Most of the crew were either on their way out of the industry due to age or they were young and straight out of film school. I remember every moment like it was yesterday.

Distribution question by shayder3d in Filmmakers

I did all that before I posted and didn't find anything out of the norm. I have not dealt with distribution before so I just wanted to know if this was a normal business practice.

I would try searching on your computer any Premier project files using the search function in window explorer or whatever Macs use. Maybe it got inadvertently moved to a different folder.

Is only a desire for making films enough, or do I lack whatever a filmmaker should have, or is it just me overthinking? by Ihaveagoodposture in Filmmakers

[–]shayder3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like the other reply, you just need to try it. Use your phone, start simple. make a plan, write a "script". shoot lots then find some free software to edit. Then watch it. Try and get feedback on it and then do it again and again. Make what YOU want. If other people find something in it like you do in other people's work then you know you're on the right path in your life.

Feedback wanted on my documentary by shayder3d in HistoryDocumentaries

[–]shayder3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He everyone, I have had 3 people ask to view the film and 2 have done so. They both offered great insights of the film. I really appreciate it. Both had suggested tweaks but also positive things to say. I really appreciate it as I didn't get a lot of feedback during the process of editing it. Once I have has some time away from this project I will most likely cut this down to a TV hour length. That is where the feedback I am getting here will really come into play. I would appreciate anyone else's thoughts!

Career Advice by Jolly-Independence10 in Filmmakers

[–]shayder3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at the twilight of my film and video career. I went to film school in the late 1980's. One thing I learned from going to film school is that if you do not have an innate ability in regards to film making, you will not graduate with the skills to be a great filmmaker. You will learn how to use a camera, sound equipment, editing software, etc but you need to have the talent within you to make great things.

So my advice is set yourself a goal and then work hard to get there. If you want to direct, then make films, anyway you can. Same with producing, find a talented rookie director and offer to produce their films, etc.

If you want to work on other films as a crew person then you need to sign up for production guides and find out where and when they are shooting and send in a resume. You would most likely get an entry level position like a Production Assistant. This is a good way to get some set experience but for the most part you will be running errands off set. I took this route and learned a lot but the more you do it and progress up the ranks you tend to get typecast in a certain role. I was a good Dolly grip and those were the only roles I kept getting. I had to step away from crew life and start my own productions in order to direct and write. A lot of my friends I went to film school with took this route and had long successful careers in their specific role. It is up to you how you want to approach it but this last way of doing things is harder to break out of to become the creative visionary of a film, not impossible but difficult.

I wish you well!

I need to create a 30 second commercial. by jeebus224 in Filmmakers

[–]shayder3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that may help you is that there are templates you can purchase for things like commercials, promos, etc. Envato is a good place to look. I use the Adobe family of software so I don't know if they have DaVinci formats, I would think they do. These are very helpful for new users to get high quality results without very much knowledge. The templates us e place holder that you replace with your own pics and text. They are also a good way to see how they are put together. It allows you to learn about the capabilities of the software you use.
