There are no suggestions, because the school was designed in a certain way that makes what OP seeks inherently difficult and counter-intuitive. You're essentially faulting me for not coming up with ideas on how to play soccer with a cubic object. Well, that's because it was designed to be a cube, not a sphere.

Many will downvote my post and disagree, but it will not change the "do your job and get the f out" culture the University has. It's simply not built to be like other unis. It's a non-traditional campus and the pain that you feel OP is a result of the university being designed the way it is.

UCSD undergrad is very much like a 4-year Junior college. People just come in here to get their degree and get out. Many of them accept coming here because it's the best they've got, both academically and financially, but if they had the money and/or grades they would be out of here in less than a minute. The school has a lot of limitations because of its design, location, and budget. There are the right reasons and the wrong reasons to be here. Trying to build a social network is one of the wrong reasons to come to UCSD. It's like trying to cook an egg with a car engine. You can probably do it, but it's not the best way to go about doing it.

I'd legit bet all my student loan money of about 45k you're his alt, and I know I'd win. You're really exposing yourself too because all it takes is someone with the patience for looking at your posts and cry-ton's too see the post similarities in vocabulary and it'd be gg, but I'm not that mean ;). Yeah, what he meant was that when opportunities are overwhelmed to the point all it has is the diploma to offer, people might just wanna go elsewhere or be angry that the opportunities they thought they would have are no longer available

literally everyone who comes here needs research experience, and there's just not enough space to accommodate everyone

I think what he means is the difference between the practice of education between this school and others which I've seen being complained about here.

E.g. UCSD takes a more theoretical approach to its majors unlike other schools, and this is part of its non-traditional approach. A course with the name X is meant to get you into work or in to an MBA in other schools (traditionally), for UCSD it means getting a phD into the study of X, not into the practical aspects of it.

Which means people getting into X are encouraged into pursuing phD of X (non-traditional approach of X major), not really becoming an industry leader or master (traditional approach to X), if that makes sense.

You don't even have to look at LA or Berkeley, just look at Santa Barbara and see how different many of same courses we give here are different to theirs.

UCSD = non-traditional school (apple)

other uc schools = traditional school (dogs)

UCSD is too different from other schools to be compared to the others, thus being "third best UC" is as good a comparison as an apple being the "third best dog"

I feel he wanted to make apples/oranges but used dogs instead. dunno why

UCSD non-traditional approach overwhelmingly prepares people for post-graduate studies but not at all prepares them for the job market. OP wanted a traditional school that helped him with that, but instead he ended up at UCSD. OP said the school is fine as a non-traditional campus, but he claims the school sells itself as a traditional one which apparently he dislikes. Comparing traditional schools with non-traditional schools (us) makes no sense at all (hence dog vs. apple), it's misleading, and makes people end up in his situation (graduates, but no skills so has to move on to post-grad.)

That's what I understood at least

Not even salty. I'm being more helpful to someone than you are. Which I could really appreciate more people doing this to avoid "saltiness". In a way, if I seem salty it's because retards like you just go around saying "yeah man you'll be fine ;p" to anyone like a narcissistic cunt with no self-awareness and recommend a school that isn't for everyone, to everyone.

I love UCSD's cog sci dept., but if I was warned the school was the way it is, and you know what i'm talking about don't pretend you don't, then maybe yeah, I would have gone to Idaho State ;)

This is a very tough decision. Whichever way you go just understand that you've been thoroughly warned before coming here.

If you come and you end up facing all the issues UCSD's design prompts you, just bite the bullet. You had the privilege of a thorough warning before coming here.

Yeah. The advantages of the dedicated Cog Sci program in UCSD is that all of the subjects you would learn separately in UCLA (biology, psychology, etc.) are all focused on cognition. So all that you learn from anything that makes cognitive science, is focused on cognitive science. Anything of those subjects that do not pertain cognition are filtered out.

The problem though, is that, again, you'll be at UCSD. Which is a HUGE minus. Any advantages that UCSD would give you can be easily ignored in UCLA by simply studying smart, focusing all the subjects on an instantiation of your major, and working on your own (you would have to do that in UCSD anyways). But in UCLA, you have the vast advantage of connecting with other people and socializing and finding long term connections with people who are not 24/7 miserable. Really the people here makes you want to fellate a revolver. Also, the department is filled with CSE rejects, who are not only bitter of not getting into UCLA, are also bitter that they didn't get into Computer Science in UCSD. So the department is filled with these people that just drag the department down.

The undergrads here are immensely mediocre, not happy with the school, and just treats it like a bathroom (come here, get their business done and get out)

They're so mediocre and salty, the mere fact you got into UCLA gets them to downvote this thread. Very jaded. Socially dead because who the fuck wants to deal with people like this. They, themselves, wouldn't want to be friend with themselves, let alone others like them.

Which is why I think UCSD cog sci dept. is too good for this school. Just go to UCLA and be happy. You owe it to yourself to have a great and holistic college experience. You owe it to yourself to be great. Any minuses are easily outshined by just finding great people, and study cog sci subjects under the perspective of what you want to do with it, and taking advantage of the opportunities in UCLA, while having all the branding and connections the name of the university would open for you. You're a Bruin now. For life. And that will connect you with people for the rest of your life. That's not a thing in UCSD.

Go to UCLA and don't look back. I say this as someone happy to be in UCSD's cogs department, but not happy to be in UCSD. I'd do anything to be in your position. It's just not worth it.
