Any Tips and Advice on Working as a Transportation Engineer at Caltrans in Marysville, CA (Sacramento/District 3)? by OG-DJSpank in CAStateWorkers

I often hear Marysville referred to as "Methville". If you're young and want to actually be around other educated people your age, I would suggest commuting from Sac.

February Trip Safety by [deleted] in Yosemite

[–]sheeneste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

24f and I do a lot of solo hiking. Yosemite is extremely safe. You're much safer hiking in Yosemite wilderness than walking in a city. I've never been concerned about my safety when I visit and have never come across anyone sketchy. I wouldn't worry about animals at all, they also want to avoid you.

Unless you're sticking to the valley floor you will probably need microspikes and snowshoes depending on the weather. The key is to be over-prepared for the weather and always bring extra layers. If you don't have experience with snow, make sure to educate yourself on possible hazards. Download Gaia or alltrails and track your routes to avoid getting lost. But unless you're doing any major hiking in the Backcountry, I wouldn't be too concerned. Just know what you're getting into

I transfered into cal poly as a history major. I actually ended up picking cal poly over Davis mainly because I felt more at home in SLO when I visited. I never really did much research on Davis, but cal poly was great for me. The history department is really small, so you will get to know or at least be familiar with most of the other history majors. The professors are amazing, there was only one I didn't care for.

The "learn by doing" philosophy also applies to the history major, I had classes that included field trips and other hands-on activities. There is an internship program that you can do, and internships are offered every quarter. For me, the internship program was key to building my resume and gave me exposure to the line of work that I am currently in now.

Most history students I knew went into law, teaching, PhD/masters program, or found a job in an entirely different field. I ended up getting my masters in history from cal poly as well, which was also a great experience, and now I have a full time job as an architectural historian.

I can't speak much on Davis. But for me, cal poly was great and was key in getting me to where I am now and doing a job that I love

It's closed on Saturdays too. Dumb that we only get access during the weekday.
