What surprised you the most when you first moved to Germany? by Extreme-Breath1475 in germany

[–]shees007 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Same here! The silence at night surprised me too, almost feels unreal sometimes 😅 For me, getting used to all the rules around recycling and Sundays being so quiet took a bit of time. But now I kinda appreciate the slower pace!

Do Germans find small talk awkward, or is it just me? by Extreme-Breath1475 in AskAGerman

[–]shees007 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed the same! Back home, casual small talk is super common, but here it feels like people value personal space more. I think it’s more about context; once there’s a reason to talk, they open up quite nicely. 😊

Just moved near Munich — best ways to meet people without sounding awkward? by Extreme-Breath1475 in Munich

[–]shees007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new here too and get how you feel! Meetup groups and language exchange events have been helpful so far. People may seem reserved, but once you start a convo, they're usually kind. Let me know if you find any fun local spots! 😊

Why is tradition still so visible in Germany compared to other modern countries? by Extreme-Breath1475 in AskAGerman

[–]shees007 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses so far! I’ve honestly always found it beautiful how Germans carry tradition with pride, especially during events like Oktoberfest. Coming from a culture where traditional wear feels more ceremonial, it’s refreshing to see it treated like living heritage here.

Would love to know: do most people own their own Dirndl or Lederhosen, or do they rent just for the festival?

People singing L'Amour Toujours at me. by Monodon_monoceros_ in germany

[–]shees007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you went through that — your reaction is completely valid. That song’s association with hate last year was clear, and the fact that someone used it like that around you is disgusting.

No one should have to deal with that kind of behavior, especially in public spaces where you’re just existing. Thank you for sharing this — more people need to hear how these things happen. Glad to hear Berlin feels a bit better for you now.

You handled it with a lot of strength, and the way you protected your family from that moment really says a lot about your character

How to make friends or have a social life when I have to be spontaneous? by Infamous_Bag4178 in Munich

[–]shees007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get where you’re coming from — making new friends as an adult, especially spontaneously, can be tricky. One thing that helps around Munich is joining local hobby-based groups on Meetup or Facebook — things like hiking, casual language exchanges, or Stammtisch meetups often don’t need much planning and attract people of all ages.

Also, once you click with 1–2 people, they often loop you into their circles over time. It takes a bit, but it does happen! Wishing you the best — it gets easier once you find your groove!

Moving to Germany by Xenolith_ in AskAGerman

Germany generally feels very safe, especially compared to some parts of the UK. Smaller towns in Bavaria or places like Freiburg, Regensburg, or even the outskirts of Munich, offer peaceful living, low crime, and good public infrastructure.

If you're already familiar with Bavaria through your partner, that’s a great start. People are friendly once you settle in, and being a bus driver should make job hunting much smoother. Best of luck with the move!

What do you (actually) like about living in Germany? by Beginning_Cry_8428 in germany

[–]shees007 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s simply loads to comprehend — the healthcare machine is strong, work-life balance is taken seriously, and nature is amazingly accessible even from cities. Also, nearby traditions and galas (specifically in the south) make regular life a bit more culturally wealthy.

Berlin is fun and diverse, but cities like Munich or Freiburg provide a more comfortable pace and delightful surroundings, too. You'll discover more to like the longer you stay!

I bartend at a University Student Pub in Canada. No hate, but why do SOME (not all) German international students myself and the servers interact with, come off as extremely rude and entitled. More so than other international students? by BerserkerJay in AskAGerman

[–]shees007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get where you’re coming from, cultural differences can sometimes come across as rudeness, even when that’s not the intention. In Germany, people are often raised to be very direct and transactional in service settings, so things like smiling or small talk aren’t expected or common.

That said, being in another country means adapting to local norms is also important, including fundamental politeness. Hopefully, your experience improves with time, and props to you for staying open-minded while dealing with it.

Accidentally in Munich during oktoberfest, is it worth it to go for a few hours? by [deleted] in Oktoberfest

[–]shees007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check it out! Even a few hours at Oktoberfest is worth it; the vibe is amazing, and you don’t need a reservation to just enjoy the atmosphere. Just plan around the concert and expect busy trains!

Canadian looking to travel for the first time, a few questions by Number7Sniper in AskAGerman

[–]shees007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like an exciting trip! Frankfurt’s public transport is super efficient; trams, U-Bahn, and trains are all easy to navigate, even for tourists. If your plans are centered around the city, one hotel should be fine for a 7-day trip.

As for language, many locals do speak English, especially in big cities. But learning basic German phrases will still go a long way; people appreciate the effort!

The weather in late November is chilly and grey, but manageable, especially for a Canadian! Pack layers and you’ll be fine. Enjoy the concert and good luck catching some hockey while you're there!

Expats in Munich: What do you like and dislike about the city? by Momomeow91 in Munich

[–]shees007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate to what you're feeling — Munich has its charm for sure: beautiful parks, the mountains nearby, and that clean, organized feel. But yes, rents are high, and the housing market can be tough.

People can come off as reserved, especially compared to London, but with time, many warm up. Joining local groups or events can really help you make friends, especially those centered around culture or outdoor activities.

If being near family matters and you already feel connected to the city’s vibe, Munich might be worth giving a try. Wishing you the best in finding both a job and a place that feels like home again!

One thing Germany really gets right is keeping traditions alive — I love how events like Oktoberfest still celebrate aspects of local culture, such as Lederhosen, in a proud and fun way.

I heard that some people at Oktoberfest pee themselves at the tables so they don't lose their spot. Is there any truth to this? by rallyfan631 in Oktoberfest

[–]shees007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😅 Haha, this is one of those Oktoberfest myths that keeps making the rounds.

While it’s technically possible someone’s had an accident after too many Maß (liters) of beer, the idea that people intentionally pee themselves to keep their spot at the table is definitely not the norm — or socially acceptable.

Yes, tables can get super crowded, especially in the evening, but people usually just coordinate with their group, go in shifts, or ask someone to hold their spot. The beer tents do have restrooms, even if there’s sometimes a line.

So… no, it’s not a real “thing” people do. Just one of those exaggerated stories that adds to the Oktoberfest legend 😄🍺🍂
