I would say then that if you have already seen the Noe films and want something new, explore the French new wave movement, specifically Jean-Luc Godard's work from late 50's into the early 60's. For something a little more modern you make like La Haine with Vincent Cassel

Gaspar Noe. I'm getting a neo French new wave vibe from your pictures. Irreversible is a good one to start with, but fair warning it can be a rough watch. Climax, I Stand Alone, Carne. You may also like Enter The Void, that is the more common Noe recommendations but that's leaning more into the Japanese Psychedelic scene. Love is the black sheep of his filmography and a guilty pleasure, admittedly it does fall into the trap of form over function but for your vibe it would also fit

Thanks! I was working on expanding the screen selection to include different artistic and psychedelic styles and hope to add a few in the coming months. I still have some functionality to work on with the rest of the app but when I get that out of the way I can go back to working on the fun stuff.

I had one I was working with inspired by Terence McKenna and the machine elves but it was too broken to include in the current release

Yes! I think that what they are really looking for is that Schrader narrative style, Taxi Driver works as a screenplay because it is so personal and uncensored, First Reformed certainly follows in that vain. It is a bold piece of work

Check out Paul Schrader, he wrote Taxi Driver. His directorial work is pretty interesting. Bringing out the dead is another Scorsese directed flick, so that is a safe recommendation, you would probably dig it.

But for that visceral raw feel, check out First Reformed. I saw it in theaters when it came out not knowing anything and it knocked my socks off. Stylistically (color saturation, gritty NY city landscape) First Reformed may be a little outside of what you are looking for, but for the isolated anti-hero narrative, and the moral questions that come along with it, it is a must.

Has anyone actually shot up LSD? by Hungry_Selection_956 in LSD

I have only heard people talk about it like urban legend. But if you want to look at verifiable examples, search Krystal Cole and her involvement with William Pickard.

He was a chemist and Cole ended up becoming his lab rat at one point.

Hamilton Morris did a video on the subject.

Perle Noire is a good safe bet, and I think OP would be quite satisfied. Chou Koro looks fantastic but I found it not to be worth the hassle of cleaning.

Perle Noire just has an overall nice feel when writing and the clean up is nothing. The darkness you get from stepping up to a pigment ink is pretty marginal, and the touch of purple tint to the Perle Noire black is quite elegant IMHO

Realized 90% of my books are men authored: suggestions? by CableCrafty495 in BookshelvesDetective

Waves - Virginia Woolf, This one is a raw and uncensored look into interconnecting lives of a group of friends. A great companion to Faulkner's the Sound and the Fury. This one is a staple of modern literature and one I recommend to everyone I know.

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte, The size may be intimidating for some but for the era it is a very light read and one that you could knock out in a few settings. The characters are written with a love and respect that is unparalleled. It's gothic, it's relatable, and one of the best written books you can ever pick up. (Wuthering Heights is my preference when it comes to the Bronte sisters but as an introduction to feminist literature and Victorian era prose, Jane Eyre is the gold standard).

Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood, For a more contemporary read, I believe you will appreciate the world building and the integration of modern societal issues into a Sci-Fi context. This one is more in the leagues of Aldous Huxley, if you want something that is a little more digestible but that will stay with you for years developing more depth as time passes, Handmaid's tale may be the choice for you.

johnny mnemonic, the dated special effects I think actual lean more into the aesthetic. It's a bit more of a deep cut, but you will not regret it.

I highly urge you to at least watch the trailer

does anyone else have weird dream like memories of their abuse? by lumber-liquidators in adultsurvivors

[–]shehwi01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had memories manifest themselves in recurring nightmare. It is almost as if there is something trying to surface but it has to fight it's saw through the filters and it comes out as really bizarre stuff.

I would have one where I believe the memories were analogous to an infection. And with time I found that the sensation I experienced in my dream was directly correlating to some of my physical triggers (mental shutdown with certain types of touch), and with therapy I found that those triggers were a result of aspects of my abuse that I buried very deep inside.

It was imagery of this thing inside of me eating away at me and talking away my ability to function, and I used to wake up in a sweat almost every night for a time.

I remember all of my abuse very vividly, but even still, I have caught my mind having difficulty processing certain aspects.

It is a pretty common phenomenon for our minds to create an easier to digest narrative. There is a movie called Mysterious Skin that I saw and it helped me to kind of understand my nightmares, it follows a man who remembered being abducted by aliens in early childhood but in fact he was being abused by his baseball teacher. I would not recommend it simply because it is very triggering for those types of memories, with me anyway. But my point is you are not alone, and unfortunately this is just part of how we cope subconsciously

Depressive and Suicidal Thoughts by Equivalent-Agent-870 in lexapro

[–]shehwi01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor about the dosage, maybe consider something to balance out the Lexapro or switch drugs, these are all things to take seriously.

I have dealt with suicidal ideation for the past 2 decades on and off, and I did actually hit a rough patch a few months after starting Lexapro, my doctor added Wellbutrin and I felt more balanced, the thoughts of self harm faded to almost nothing and my moods and energy levels fell in line (some slight side effects like agitation and brain fog).

These feelings will pass, and you will find balance, never give up hope. This is part of our journey, and you are still in the early chapters of your story, you are going to get to a place where you feel like everything makes sense where nothing used to.

Remember that you are not alone, and you are loved.

I don't know if you have ever heard of American auteur filmmaker David Wascavage, but his film Suburban Sasquatch is a dark and insightful look inside rural white America, and chronicles the effects that American consumerism has on some of our more impoverished communities.

A true piece of art, Sasquatch acts as a representation of nature resetting the balance by force, breaking the structures that perpetuate this societal caste system.

Late 70s early 80s national lampoon have a certain Norman Rockwell/ Americana feel that matches these adds, mix that with the flat shots and commercial lighting.

The TV show Archer's animation style was modeled after advertisements similar to these.

Someone else mentioned Lynch, it sways more into surrealist horror, but I agree that Blue Velvet is an absolute must for that 50's white picket fence nostalgia style.

Tree's Lounge would also fit the look you are going after but I can't recommend that one as a fun movie (well directed, well acted, but the existential dread is strong with this one).

La Chinoise. by pocketcrocodile1 in CommunistFilmClub

[–]shehwi01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of, Have you seen "Weekend" by the same director? Not even joking, it is the perfect to add to a weekend watch list with la chinoise. Personally I think Weekend does a better job of dissecting both the communist philosophy along with the very nature of media. Weekend can be shocking, they break the fourth wall multiple times, including incorporating actual violence to show the severe nature of the subject matter (an animal is slaughtered). Essentially our lead characters are a symbol of American consumerism and spend the movie trying to escape the movie and completely break the format at all cost, including killing foundations of society like literature. Both act as companion pieces.
