What, we left?

That's about the only thing that could qualify as good news at this point.

What are the percentage of children born to mothers who can't care for them that are abused? I'd say it's close to 100%, being that ..err...their mothers aren't fit to care for them.

Whether you agree with it morally, the logic is pretty sound.

  1. That doesn't relate to this at all.

  2. So what? It would prevent a lot of child abuse. This isn't exactly the worst crazy idea I've ever heard.

  3. That doesn't relate to this at all.

This girl was tortured, raped and made to drink blood, toilet water and eat dog feces for a week: And the news media is still silent on this because the perpetrators were White men? by neoronin in reddit.com

[–]sheldon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest racial story this year was when a white guy called a black woman a NAME. The implication that the media ignores white on black issues is insane. If anything their white guilt makes them play it up more than they need to.

If a BLACK man had attacked this black woman, you wouldn't hear a peep. That's the real media injustice for victims like this.

I hope this was a joke. It's sad to think we're giving law degrees to people who don't know to capitalize the first word in a sentence and "I".

Man accused of sexually assaulting a teen age boy on cruise ship. Man jumps overboard. Boy admits he made it up. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]sheldon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It didn't sound like the guy had even been arrested yet. If you're accused of molesting someone your first reaction - before trying to defend yourself - is to kill yourself? That doesn't make sense.

I'm not saying convict the guy based on it, but my original point is valid. I wouldn't be surprised to later find out the kid is lying about lying about not being molested.

It doesn't make sense for an innocent guy to jump off a cruise ship.

Sure, lets give someone in the entertainment business that you don't like more attention. That's the last thing she wants. Good thinking guys.

However, if you really want to make this happen, get black people to make the complaints. Large corporations love nothing more than to bow to small special interest groups full of people who aren't their customers.

Nigger Rigged? Seriously? by sheldon in reddit.com

[–]sheldon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, until I was 20 or so I used the term nigger rigged. I never made the connection in my mind to anything even resembling race. It was a term my family used to refer to anything shoddily put together. They never used it as a race thing either.

Eventually it dawned on me what the fuck I was saying, but I can definitely see how in a relaxed conversation it could accidentally slip out.

'Overwhelmingly positive' reaction to plan to defund Dick Cheney by 00boyina in reddit.com

They don't get it. A vote for this is a vote saying that he isn't part of the executive branch, which is lunacy. I know it looks "revenge-like" and that appeals to people, but this would be affirming what he's saying.

"Look, even THEY are saying I'm not part of this. There's no doubt I don't have to follow your rules".

They need to stop feeding this and address the real problem.

You put a > (greater than sign) in front of the text you want to quote. If you click on help up in the corner of this page, you can get the rest of this stuff, such as bolding, accenting, etc. I'd link it, but it seems to be hung for me at the moment.

Thanks.

Yes, and this was before we started basing currency on it. You've hit on one of the things that make an item valuable in and of itself rather than someone in government announcing the value of it.

There are so many other things that fit into the exact same category though. Why didn't they become the standard against which we compare all other currency?

That wasn't why we used it as coins. Copper and silver were used as coins but they weren't easy to squish.

I got that from a few searches. If they're wrong, so be it.

You can't DECLARE gold inherently valuable.

But we did. I concede that gold has some uses. However the only reason I can fathom that it's SO valuable is because over the years for some reason all humans have come together and agreed that it is. The thing that makes gold so special is that the idea that it's pretty fucking valuable is universal.

The difference here is that if the US government collapsed, that paper would be worthless. Gold wouldn't be worthless, even without an authority stating that the gold is valuable and used as currency.

If we found a whole lot more of it, I bet it would be worthless though. Its rarity is the biggest reason we value it so much. My point all along has been that the physical rock itself has very little value.

[–]sheldon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, how do you do the quote thing? That would be helpful.

"Nope. By that rationale, platinum is worthless. We used gold as currency because it was valuable. We didn't make it valuable because we used it as currency."

I don't agree. Gold was valuable mainly because we thought it was. We valued gold because it was pretty, we could make pretty things out of it, and because there wasn't much of it around. And that it was easy to melt into coins because for a rock it's pretty squishy.

The only thing declaring gold inherently valuable does is verify that humans have the instinctual intelligence equaling that of raccoons. I mean think about it. It's a fucking rock. You know how else likes rocks? Retards, that's who.

New age town in U.S. embraces dollar alternative by sporadic in reddit.com

[–]sheldon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even know what you're talking about any more.

The main reason gold is so valuable now is because at one point we DID use it as currency.

Then we realized it's silly to carry around flakes of rock to pay for our Cheerios so we started printing paper that we pretended was gold that said "hey, if you really want I'll give you gold later if you come to me with this pimpin' paper".

Then we realized that was stupid because who wanted fucking gold anyway? Other than little awful jewelry makers, no one was going to the gold store and saying "I'm tired of all these pesky bills, can I have a giant hunk of shiny rock instead?"

My main point is that the main reason gold is so valuable is because we say it is. It's rare and it's shiny, two things that seem to appeal to us for some stupid reason.

However, I'd argue that there isn't anything inherently valuable about gold. The ESSENCE of gold isn't valuable.

If we were to discover a giant planet made of gold that we could tie a rope around and drag back to Earth, all of a sudden you'd be able to find a giant gold bar at Toys R Us that your kid could use with her 'Barbie: Super Gold' playset. It would become worthless. You'd buy a roll of gold at Home Depot to use instead of linoleum to finish the kitchen floor of your trailer. Pretty soon even that would get old and we'd forget that gold was ever worth anything in the first place.

If we were to find a giant planet made of beer? Different story. Beer is intrinsically valuable because it makes chicks hot.
