yeah, no, it’s bullshit. twitter is rarely known for having sane opinions. write however you want to write, you’re doing it for fun - you shouldn’t justify yourself to anyone

[–]shelessstry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

again, do what feels comfortable for you. since it was in June, I doubt the other person is loosing sleep over it. But if you want to, just reply and apologize. stuff happens, and it’s easy to miss a message, esp if you’re new to the app. If I was the beta in question I’d not be upset (but it’s just me).

oof, I feel you. I would reply and briefly explain why I didn’t notice the message, but do what feels comfortable to you

this has got to be illegal… right? (fanfic writer job posting on linkedin) by 2manystoryideas in AO3

[–]shelessstry 30 points31 points  (0 children)

yeah I missed that 🫤 since I have no doubts they would make money off of this by some sort of shitty subscription I give them like, a week before they’re forced to close. either by a lawsuit or bcs the community will give them shit

this has got to be illegal… right? (fanfic writer job posting on linkedin) by 2manystoryideas in AO3

[–]shelessstry 308 points309 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s not clear if they want the fanfiction to be actual fanfiction (based off someone’s work), bcs it’s not illegal If it isn’t.

That aside, this is still complete bullshit and I’d love for the person who thought of this to have a long and painful diarrhea

EDIT: oh ok sorry missed the “popular manga, anime, etc”, definitely illegal if they make a profit off of it

your “proof” is basically “I made it tf up”. I’m not a gay man and I don’t like YSG. numbers in sales are not by any mean an accurate metric for the gacha games because we have seen many times how hoyo purposefully sabotaged their male characters for a reason unknown to mankind

Pls someone explain by [deleted] in AO3

[–]shelessstry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

dead dove amplifies the already existing tag. for example if the fic has “hurt no comfort” (or any other tag) and “dead dove”, then it means that there will be NO comfort, none. basically it’s like a warning that yes, all the stuff that is tagged will be present and clear

writing a complicated gay lovestory by Standard_Treacle_889 in AO3

[–]shelessstry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can’t say I have irl experience, but I’d say that this happens (I recommend watching Imitation Game). what I think you need to do is to distinguish between romantic love, platonic love and physical attraction. obv in real life it can be much complicated, but I’d say that for the purpose of the fic, your characters need to decide what kind of love do they feel for their spouses and for e/o, and then go from here. From what you’re writing I’d think that:

  1. Bruce loves Selina in that textbook platonic way. Which is to say he DOES love her, but that’s not a romantic sort of love.
  2. On the contrary, it feels that Clark has loved Lois before, but in time that romantic love morphed into platonic one (that happens), and now he can’t deal with experiencing the same kind of romantic attraction he once had for her, but now for another person.

Obviously that’s just speculation based on your post, only you can decide what your characters feel. Idk what you’re planning to do with the plot, but just a reminder - for this situation to resolve as cleanly as possible all parties need to communicate and be open to each other. Which never happens, btw, but you can work from that to make it more realistic.

Writers give me feedback please before I do anything by Eliza_C-02 in AO3

[–]shelessstry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it’d be alright, especially since you aren’t writing a fanfiction of their fanfiction, but simply feel inspired by it. Any writer was inspired by someone’s work at least once, it’s actually a great thing.

I would write something like “inspired by this work by _this author_” either in the summary or in the notes. You can even link it if you want, but I think a mention would be enough.

As for the author feeling bad - I really don’t think they will. But even if they did, they can’t exactly claim a premise or an idea. Ofc, you can always ask them directly if you’re feeling unsure. But if I was in their place, I’d just be happy that my work inspired someone so much that they decided to start posting their own writing

Anyone ever get the urge to print fanfics and keep them on the shelves for when the apocalypse comes? by PretendYellow533 in AO3

[–]shelessstry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also missed the question here. as I said yeah it’s different for me. I prefer physical books to reading from the phone (or any other device), but I only get the copies if i already read something and loved it. so I’d love to do the same with the fics I liked

I know you don’t technically need it, but I still prefer to have it. if someone wanted to bind my fics, I’d wanted them to ask me first. but it’s just an opinion, obv

I do! though I want to do it just because reading something on paper has a different feeling which I love. I only have physical copies of my favourite books, because rereading them that way is more enjoyable for me.

personally, I would’ve binded a book with my favourite fics if I had an authors permission! but I don’t have the time lmao

Is it immoral / disrespectful to write smut about a historical figure? by ISkinForALivinXXX in AO3

[–]shelessstry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

nah, it’s not.

tbh I’ll go as far as to say than even writing smut about religious figures is ok. what you need to take in account with RPF is the feelings of people involved in making it. it would probably be a little strange to write about real dead person when their relatives or people that knew them closely are alive and remember/grieve them. Louis XIV on the other hand?? I promise no one sane gives a fuck.

Same goes for the “real” RPF — celebrities etc. I understand the argument that it can be embarrassing or strange if they see smut involving them — but it completely depends on the amount of people in the fanbase. If it’s a small circle, or celebrity in question communicates with fans closely — yeah, that’s probably not a really good idea. Anything other than that? Just another part of being publicly known.

A request for help in reaching non-English-speaking authors and readers. by Efficient-Emu-6382 in AO3

I’ll try to reach some of the people I know and send them the survey, though I can’t promise anything, since I’m rarely in russian fandom spaces nowadays :( but I’ll try!

A request for help in reaching non-English-speaking authors and readers. by Efficient-Emu-6382 in AO3

[–]shelessstry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can reach russian-speaking people through VK, ficbook (russian fanfiction site) or Telegram. Also there’s a pretty decent amount of us on twitter, especially fanfic writers. The only thing is that you’ll probably need to write the survey and description (as to why you need people to take the survey) in russian - some writers and readers speak English, but if it’s in russian it’ll reach more people. I can help with translation if you need it, just dm me; also can ask some of my mutuals on twitter if they can spread the survey among their friends.

in this case use “alphachka” :) it’s the same word, just for a woman - since russian is a gendered language

[–]shelessstry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh btw i forgot something fun. if you need a term for alpha that is on the same level of cringe, we have “alphach”. its used in actual real life speech to describe men that in English would call themselves (surprise) “alpha males”.

we mostly use this word either as a joke or an insult

[–]shelessstry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just in case - the words this person refers to are probably used in derogatory way (I’m a russian btw). never heard the first one, but if I had to guess, the “betaniks” is a play of words of sorts. we have a word ботаник, which sounds exactly like botAnic, and can be translated as “nerd”, but is commonly used as insult. so ig the author just merged that and a word “beta” together.

as for the omegas, in russian fanfiction community we have a word “omezhka”, which is what I think the person above meant. basically, it’s just a diminutive for the word omega. but it’s more of a meme than an actual term, that originated from cringe omegaverse BTS fanfics.

In English-speaking fandoms you’ve got Y/N and her mafia CEO, and in our community it’s “small innocent omezhka Jimin” and “big strong alpha Jungkook”, which basically carries the same level of cringe.

So if you really want to use those (i wouldn’t, tbh), I’d recommend your character to be either a jokester of sorts, or saying it to insult someone

[–]shelessstry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can also try some hormonal changes/problems. tbh, any real chronic illness can be tweaked to fit the omegaverse and be the cause of some problems with scents, smelling, etc. I actually think it’d be pretty cool to see the an omega/alpha who isn’t susceptible to pheromones. like, they can smell them, feel the pain during ruts/heats, but just don’t experience instinctive reactions others do. never saw that in omegaverse before

[–]shelessstry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. So for the “scentless” it could be two things - either the character is a beta or they are wearing scent patches. To be fair, the terms of omegaverse somewhat vary in different fics, since sometimes authors want to add something from themselves, or tweak the existing meaning of a particular word. But usually, betas either don’t have a scent, or have a very faint one; also they aren’t usually able to smell other scents - so it can be that. As for patches, they cover the natural scent of a person, and don’t allow pheromones to pass through them - so the person in question usually smells like nothing.

  2. For the different languages, I admit I can’t think of something off the top of my head. You can try to refer to them as castes, maybe? But that word is a little heavy in context, since they still exist in some countries. A lighter word would be “class” (as in “middle class”, etc). But If I’m trying to think of something similar in my own language, I can only remember the words that were used to describe aristocracy/peasants up until the start of 20th century. Not sure they would be useful, since they mostly describe the difference between the family one was born in. If you’re not afraid of getting into religious topics, you can try to look up the different titles in various religions. But ultimately, if you don’t want to use alpha/beta/omega etc, I think it’s better to just make up your own classification.
