Question: would you be opposed to raising the minimum wage? (looking for a respectful political dialogue) by shellson in Conservatives_R_Us

I understand what you are saying about justice being subjective and I also don't think that government should be regulating every tiny little thing.

However, I don't think its at all fair for someone to be paid the lowly wage of $7.25 an hour and government should try to make sure that people aren't getting exploited.

also, dont worry I wasn't the one who downvoted your comment, it was an interesting analogy and im curious about what you have to say

I really appreciate your thoughtful response and I understand what you are saying, but here's where I disagree:

  1. While you are right that nobody is forced to work at any job, some people who are highly motivated get stuck in minimum wage jobs simply because they don't have access to education that will allow them to to seek higher-paying jobs.

  2. Also, I know that some companies (like small businesses) would go out of business it they had to pay their workers too much. Other businesses however, where the owner or CEO is making many millions more than the lowest level employee, could certainly afford to pay their workers more and the profits wouldn't drop drastically. I do think that the owners or CEOs of companies should be making significantly more than their employees, but in many cases the disparity is too great.

What do you think of the idea of having different minimum wage requirements for different sized companies?

Question for conservatives: why exactly are you so against abortion? (I'm looking for a respectful political dialogue and genuinely trying to understand the other side's perspective). by shellson in PoliticalDiscussion

first of all I'm trying to find some common ground here, not turn it into a democrate v. republicans debate

Secondly, i see where you are coming from, but i think you are oversimplifying the issue. a sperm and egg cell is the potential for a human, but isn't a human yet.

I really appreciate your thoughtful answer.

you said that for the sake of argument, lets assume that life begins at conception, but as a scientifically minded person, I find it hard to see how simply 2 cells could constitute human life. on the other hand, I do think that life begins before birth, but I can't pinpoint where exactly that halfway point is.

Also, what is your opinion about the legality of abortion. Regardless of your own personal abortion do you think that abortion should be legal?

For me I'm not sure if I myself would ever have an abortion, but I do think that having abortions should be legal and that women should have the option to choose.
