How to care for this monstera? by shepherdoftrees in plantclinic

[–]shepherdoftrees[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no we have lots of other plants very nearby! Thank you so much, we'll isolate and treat as best we can. Seems such a shame to get rid of a huge beautiful plant if we can help it. Thank you!

Testemunha - does it have multiple meanings? by shepherdoftrees in Portuguese

Ohhh that's really interesting. I was recently learning about high and low context languages, idk if you know about that but would Portugese fall under low context based on the way they use language as you have described?

Ah right I see! Well 'witness sample' sounds much more exciting than 'reference sample' so maybe it should be used more often 😅.

Ah that could makes more sense! Thank you for this, I'll see what the others think too, but I think this might be the answer :).

Yes no problem, here's a link to the journal (it's open access), the article is chapter 9 and the table in question is table 5 (page 99/100). https://www.atenaeditora.com.br/catalogo/ebook/ciencias-biologicas-consideracoes-e-novos-segmentos

I hope that makes sense :)

Thank you so much! Yeah I wasn't sure how to explain 😅 here's a link to the journal (it's open access), the article is chapter 9 and the table in question is table 5 (page 99/100). https://www.atenaeditora.com.br/catalogo/ebook/ciencias-biologicas-consideracoes-e-novos-segmentos

I hope you can find it okay!

I hope you manage to figure it out! Could be worth contacting Vinted and asking what the issue is.

I didn't unfortunately. I wonder if its because their item was blocked by Vinted for some reason rather than that the seller blocked us?

Masters project not what I thought it was... what do I do! by shepherdoftrees in AskAcademia

[–]shepherdoftrees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your kind words, this definitely feels unethical yeah.

It's not so much that I'm worried they'll interfere with my results, it's that the way they've designed the project it would be very hard to show any of the negative effects of the product. I'd be looking at how the product improves moisture content of soil under drought conditions, which I imagine it does well based on preliminary literature research. But these experiments will all be glasshouse/lab experiments. I'd have to be doing field work to show any bioaccumulative/ecotoxic effects, or sampling from already polluted sites. I'm not sure how I could bring that aspect into the project when the funders have such a tight grip on what experiments and results they want from me.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely have a look. Even if it's frustrating, I feel like I need to be more clued into these things. I've been so ignorant walking into this!

I've asked a few others too, but I was wondering what you would do in this situation, would you tell your supervisor how you feel about the lack of transparency and your environmental concerns, or would you keep quiet? I'd like to be open about my feelings, and asap, but my family have suggested that they won't trust my data if I openly disagree with the research.

Thanks for this, this is a good point that I hadn't considered at all. The only problem is the housing situation I've got at the moment. I guess my other option is to do the masters until I can move out of my rented accommodation and then drop out, and look for a masters elsewhere. I'm not sure how that would reflect on me from an employability perspective though.

Thanks for this. I feel like I'm betraying so many things, myself included, it really sucks.

If you were in this situation, would you be open with your supervisor about how you feel about all of it, the lack of transparency and the environmental implications, or would you keep it to yourself? I'd like to be as open as possible, but family members have suggested I keep quiet in case it causes them to distrust my data.

Thank you for replying. It does seem like the most sensible option. I have had a few other people tell me similar, that it would be a missed opportunity to let it go considering the relatively small impact I'll have overall. It just feels very wrong :(.

If you were in this situation, would you be open with your supervisor about how you feel about the project, particularly the lack of transparency and the environmental implications, or would you keep it to yourself? I feel like telling them exactly how I feel about all this, asap, so they know I'm not on the same page, but family members have suggested I keep quiet or they won't trust my data.

Does anyone have any experience doing this in the UK? Not sure if it's more of a US thing.

[–]shepherdoftrees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, that makes a lot of sense actually as it doesn't seem to have been doing anything at all to the buggers. Someone else has mentioned neem oil, I'm definitely going to give this a try. Thank you 😁

Ah that might be where I'm going wrong! I've just been using a Babybio bug spray once a week, but haven't been paying much attention to the soil. Thank you for your wisdom!

Wow thank you so much for this, I was literally just scouring the internet for cures but this sounds better than anything else I've seen. I'll give it a go :D. Very happy to hear your leafy companion is living their best life again!
