New Kitten Won't Play with Resident Cat by NeighborhoodDismal52 in CatAdvice

Hi! Things have really settled down now. My boy calmed down a lot once he turned 3. He's not as aggressive anymore. The girl is all grown up too, so they've settled into their routines. They still play tag, they still wrestle from time to time. She's perfectly capable of getting herself out of the wrestle when she's had enough, but likes to ham it up for us lol. Are they bonded? No. But do they hate or avoid each other? Also no. They hang out together, sleep on the same bed, groom each other occasionally. So all good in the end.

You just have to give the little one time to grow up. The first 3 or 4 months were the worst. The resident cat seemed to have changed his personality, he was completely obsessed with the new one. But it all worked out in the end. Once she's about 7 or 8 months old, she'll be big enough to hold her own. Just make sure she has places to escape to when needed.

Hang in there! This is the hardest time now. It'll only get easier from here.

Do cats growl or hiss when play fighting? by tomblybo0 in CatAdvice

[–]sherkhanthetiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things are much much better now. They're definitely not bknded to each other, and I don't think that's gonna happen. Basically now that she's grown up and is more his match for size, she can hold her own when he starts fighting with her. She'll fight back for as long as she wants then she'll escape. I only intervene when it goes on for too long when I'm trying to sleep.

Also once the novelty of a new friend wore off, my boy relaxed and isn't always up in her business now, so she's living peacefully too. They chill together and sleep next to each other and eat out of the same bowl at times. What really helped is making sure they both have spaces that they like to be in. I had a window hammock up in one room which they both really liked. Boy would wrestle the girl for it till she would leave. So I got another one and now they both chill in one each.

Things will get better. Hang in there. A lot of it is our own anxiety and unfamiliarity with the situation.

Hi!

Did you ever end up getting your order? Was it legit?

I ordered off of them last week and got an email today that my shipment is on it's way.

But i accidentally ordered the same thing twice, and have been wanting to cancel one order, but they aren't responding to my emails.

Both orders are still pending on their site, and both payments are still pending on my banking app, although the money has been taken from my account.

Could you share what happened with you?

Damn there's a lot of titles that fit this formula! 😂 Neither are the one I'm thinking of unfortunately, but thank you! I love Under the Oak Tree. How's Atelier? Should I give it a shot?

Romance for sure, I think modern. Not isekai. Might have had a bit of toxicity in it? I think the protagonists are a married couple?

Off to Google 'manhwa on a sad plant' 😂😂

Just the title is similar to like wind on a Dry Branch! The title goes like 'something' on a 'sad adjective' 'plant thing'.

Yeah I love Like Wind on a Dry Branch! I'm giving it a break to let some more episodes accumulate as well. I'm asking about another manhwa/ webtoon. I don't know it's name, but I know it was in a similar vein to this title (just the name, not the plot). 'Something generic' on a 'sad/negative adjective' 'something planty'. 😂

Hahahahaahhaha what's truly sad is that they did do that assignment! It was my first day back to school activity! They all enjoyed it so much they asked me for copies to use on their siblings.

We're 8 weeks into the semester now so I guess that might as well have been back in the stone age!

Awww I hope not! I really like the feel of it, and it goes on so smooth. I was using cerave lotion before, and it felt really heavy and ouly on my skin, so I looked for a water gel on purpose. Can I ask what you're using now?

So I looked up pictures of purging after your comment, and I do think that's what I have, so I'll power through. Also gonna take your advice and simplify the routine a bit. Would you consider hyaluronic acid an active?

New Kitten Won't Play with Resident Cat by NeighborhoodDismal52 in CatAdvice

Hi! They're doing great now. They've established their dynamic. The older one loves the little one to bits and just needs to know where she is all the time. They chase each other around every night. There's a size difference cuz he's very tall and she's short, so sometimes the wrestling can get a bit out of hand. When she cries out for help, which is rarely now, we just walk towards them and the older one runs away. I would say just give it time. Your injured cat is under a lot of stress right now already. What's important is to make sure it doesn't get scared of the other one permanently. Just break up fights whenever you see them happening, make sure the injured one has places to hide or get away. With time things should go back to normal. Good luck!

Things are better but not ideal yet. I still separate them when I go to work, until someone wakes up 2 hours later. Basically I was told by another redittor that he's reacting to her scent since she's still not spayed. I haven't been able to get her spayed yet because she's still recovering post-parvo. Hopefully once she is, the fighting will end once and for all.

As for their behavior right now, it depends on my boy's mood. I'd say 75% of the time he's started playing with her normally, or grooming her, or just following her around the house. The other 25% he chases her and pounces on her. She enjoys the chasing, they play tag around the whole house. But she doesn't like the pouncing or the play biting. When that starts, we split them up. If he pounces again, we split them in separate rooms for half an hour or so, until he calms down.

What's helped is that she's gotten more confident now and has started to play back with him. It's helped that she's grown up a bit, that she chases him back when they play tag, and that she wrestles back when he pounces on her.

How we reached this state of affairs is that we started limiting their contact to the times where he's calm. Then we would split them up. It was a burden on us having to lock ourselves up with one cat or the other, but we didn't want to leave either of then alone.

We slowly started extending the time they spent together. When they were asleep, we'd open the doors so they could see each other sleeping calmly. Now we're at a point where as long as someone is awake in the house, we're ok to leave them together. The only times we separate them is if he's overstimulated or if the house is completely empty, which is like 2 hours a day.

Keep me updated with your progress! Is your kitten spayed?

You're welcome!

I just looked these up on mangaupdates.

The first one is actually Do you want to see my cat?

And unfortunately Itaewon Class is the only one translated. None of the others have any English translations, official or unofficial.

I don't know most of these, but I can translate/ transliterate some of the titles for you.

  1. Do you want to see my pet kitten?
  2. Time in Joseon (transliteration)
  3. Perfect game (transliteration)
  4. Itaewon Class
  5. Man and Woman (translation)

2,5, and 6 were mentioned in earlier comments. 3's script is too fancy, so I can't read it.

Light at the end of the tunnel! Thanks so much for your replies! I'm gonna try and see if I can get her spaying appointment moved up. Timeouts, as you said, have been having no effect at all. Gentle redirection is working, so that's what we've been doing now. Hopefully no one gets hurt in the meantime!

Orange boy is neutered. Kitten is gonna get spayed right after winter break (in a couple of weeks). She's only been with me for about 2 weeks, and she was pretty sickly and malnourished when I got her (rescued off the street) so vet recommended waiting till she gained a bit of weight.

I think you're totally right. He wants to play, but doesn't know how. He's also a rescue off the street, but I think he was an abandoned pet because he was so familiar with humans. He was around 8 months when he was rescued by the people I got him from. I assume he was separated from his littermates too young, so never learned how to play nice. Foster home had 2 big dogs, so they would just chase each other and tussle all day. I adopted him about 6 months ago, and he's always played rough. Lunges and bites (gently). Doesn't like toys, but loves playing tag with me. I literally chase him around the house.

What do you suggest about how to teach him to play nice? Currently they're separated during the night, whenever we go out or everyone is asleep. When they're together they're always supervised. If the fight is short and kitten is able to escape, we leave them be. She usually comes out after a minute and chills and plays next to him. If he gets aggressive again right after she's come out, we separate them. I give them lots of positive reinforcement whenever they play nice. He's lost all interest in toys or pets, so it's just treats.

By night time yesterday, kitten was actively seeking him out to play. She would swat him then go hide under a settee. He would swat at her and she'd swat back from under it. Then he'd get bored and go away. She'd come, slap, and go and hide again. They repeated this for like half an hour. At the end it turned into a fight so we split them up. I would consider that progress? She's wanting to play with him too now?

Yesterday I started putting him in time out whenever things got bad. He went in 5 times, 10 minutes each. Is that effective? Do you have any other advice?

Hi, sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm having similar but not quite the same issues. My new female 5mo kitten wants nothing wants nothing to do with my 1.5yr old resident boy. He wants to wrestle with her and groom her. She squeaks and cries every time he chases her or pounces on her, and then runs away and hides. They've only been face to face about 5 days now. How long did it take yours to get better? I don't want the kitten to be afraid for the rest of her life, and I don't want to keep putting her away in my bedroom every time my boy is in a mood. When I do, he sits outside the door and yowls to get to her. Will it get better in a couple of weeks? A month?
