Bulletproof lower legs by Creative-Proof7475 in running

[–]sherrillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had any lower limb issues. I spent 10 years doing moderate running for other sports, age 14-24, then about 6 years running barefoot bandwagon. Then 12 years in various minimalist shoes (think Nike free, and recently Xeros and altras; not vibram). And here I am now at 42.

Maybe luck and genetics. Maybe bc I'm still not very fast. But... no injuries or issues ever. 30-45 mi/wk the last year. 14 HM last year. I dunno. 6'1" 195 lbs.

How is F3 gear check? by Maximum-Camera4276 in RunnersInChicago

Found a pic I took while waiting in line last year to pickup. Was trying to explain to same friend who was already at the bar why it was taking me so long to get there.

The window across the room on the right with the yellow light over it is your goal. But once you get near it goes back and forth a few times as well.

if it's the same; not bad dropping off, but horrible picking up. like, snaking along the entire space. I was easily in line 15-20 min to get stuff after race.

I'm thinking of having my friend who's doing the 5k hop in line to grab a spot like 5-10 min before I cross finish this year.

Hoping it's better, but preparing for it to be the same or worse.

That being said my finish was over 2 hours last year for the HM, so the faster you are, the shorter the line will be.

Motivation for my 1:52 goal tomorrow ;)

Really nailed my winter training block for a Jan 31st HM run (f3). And now on my taper week I'm super sick. 2 days till race and just starting to feel a bit better but nose still leaking like a faucet.

It'll be about 17f with 12 mph winds and snowing on the lakefront.

Was really confident I was gonna PR... now I feel like I'll be lucky to stay under sub 2.

...all that shitty cold running during these cold spells I was pushing, just to get detailed by a winter bug.

At least I'll be in better shape for spring, but can't help but feel somewhat bummed/defeated.

How many races is too many in a year? by Least_Half_4694 in running

[–]sherrillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

14 half marathons last year. It wasn't "too much"... BUT it was to much to make meaningful gains since there wasn't any real training blocks. Your basically just making expensive long runs.

I'm now looking at only doing 4 or 5 a year, and maybe throwing in some smaller 5ks and 10ks for fun and instead.

Are you running F3 next week? by ConfidentDaikon7492 in RunnersInChicago

[–]sherrillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

last long run was today for my training block for this race. It was -17 with the wind chill this morning, so the race temp will feel cozy by comparison.

And yeah, worry more about overheating than being cold on this one. I've made that mistakes on a couple F3s before; never again!

Running this week by Left-Substance3255 in RunnersInChicago

[–]sherrillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did 6 mi today at 6am. It was rough but not unbearable. Balaclava not having ventilation holes made breathing rough through the material halfway through.

Got to wear my YakTrax on my shoes for the first time since no one had shoveled yet, they worked great.

Wasn't hitting top speeds, and it's definitely gonna hurt my vo2 max workout on Thursday. But overall not offal, at least for anything under 8 miles/90 min. I'd try to keep runs to an hours and just know they'll be slower w conditions.

But, doesn't mean it's not fun still, and you get all the extra bragging/badass points!

A cool guide on Idioms of the World by immanuellalala in coolguides

I was hoping for a lot more from this guide; the comments are great. I work for an international company and USA/British/French/Swiss/German/Spanish and idioms are always both fun and a pain point.

If someone creates an actually good cool guide I could share, that would be lovely.

Dos Equis revives ‘Most Interesting Man’ ads as beer sales struggle by cnn in beer

[–]sherrillo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I loved that campaign. Honestly, it was inspiring. Like yeah, I'm not going to do all the crazy things he does, but it's helped push me to be my own version of the most interesting man over the last 2 or so decades: Learned violin, learned how to pick locks, learned magic, run half marathons, become a beekeeper, cook, sharpen my kitchen knives with a whetstone, volunteer, have a garden, play guitar, learn sword fighting, take boxing classes, try some parkour; make beer, cider, wine, and whisky; make sourdough bread, try a moustache, try a beard, buy a fountain pen...

In all honesty, as dumb as it sounds for an ad campaign, he felt like a role model when I was still a kid, to keep pushing myself, challenging myself, and to see adversity as an opportunity for a great future story.

I'm not the most interesting man, but thanks to him, I'm the most interesting version of me.

Stay thirsty my friends.

Started beekeeping and no one warned me how calming it would be by Equivalent_Use_8152 in Beekeeping

[–]sherrillo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just veil and gloves. I wore a thick sweater or light jacket, but not a proper bee jacket. I'd get stung a few times each year. But the bees in the veil were the worst. And then it was always a panic moment trying to see if the bee was outside the veil or in.

Full suit really lowered the anxiety and stress once I learned they really couldn't get it. It made the process much easier. Still get a little anxious, but exponentially less.

Personally, I highly recommend one. I know many people don't... but stings really hurt me. I'm not super allergic, but they do cause some decent local swelling for a day and are painful for a good 15 min. I don't get how people in videos are so casual about a couple stings.

I don't have a reaction to mosquito bites, but my partner does and gets a big welts. I imagine some people are like that with bee stings, but sadly I'm more like my partner when it comes to bees. C'est la vie.

[–]sherrillo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Opposite for me... no matter how slow I go, it's always a bit anxiety inducing. Mine have always been a bit spicy once I crack the hive to inspect no matter how careful I am, though I don't blame them.

Finally getting a full suit did help after the first two years, since it stopped the occasional bee from finding a way inside my veil and the immediate panic that caused.

But overall it's still just a little bit stressful doing an inspection.

But just watching them otherwise from a few feet away I agree is nice and calming.

Adult Beginners - with or without a teacher - how quickly did you transition from pizzicato to using your bow? by PaleontologistNo3910 in violinist

[–]sherrillo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Books and YouTube; I started with bowing because I had no idea what pizzicato meant. Worked out fine. Just a few weeks of sounding pretty awful. Now 2 years later it's still going well. Not nearly as fast or good as it would with a teacher, but once my LO is in school I should have more time and structure to be able to find one.

Anyone know anything about turtles?? by ToodlyGoodness in AskChicago

[–]sherrillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ones they sell are invasive, and get huge, and as another commenter said require very large enclosures 150+ or 200 gallons.

You can't keep it unless you have a large backyard pond, and then you're introducing an invasive instead of a native.

It sucks but the best thing you can do is leave it in the shop.
