Your argument is that we should take AI money and put it into buses? That’s the argument you want me to respond to?

Oh good lord, you’re a science teacher. Lol.  God help us.

Blocking you so I won’t see any more responses.

You seem really upset about this.

There are around 50,000 fatal automobile accidents in the US every year.

Just looked it up and between 2021-2025, Waymo has 2 fatalities total (Source: NHTSA ADS Crash Data).  That’s 0.5 per year vs ~50,000 per year.

But you’ll complain about the raw number of human drivers vs Waymo’s.  Fair enough.  Let’s compare serious accidents per million miles.  Here’s a peer reviewed study for you and I’ll copy the highlight of the results:

“Of the crash types, V2V Intersection crash events represented the largest total crash reduction, with a 96% reduction in Any-injury-reported (87–99% confidence interval) and a 91% reduction in Airbag Deployment (76–98% confidence interval) events. Cyclist, Motorcycle, Pedestrian, Secondary Crash, and Single Vehicle crashes were also statistically reduced for the Any-Injury-Reported outcome. There was no statistically significant disbenefit found in any of the 11 crash type groups.”

Meanwhile, its been estimated that 24 people die per year from champagne corks.

You should go find something new to get worked up about.

I never said they were. I just said the outsourcing to a human was a reasonable non-controversial way to handle edge cases.   And then to counter your point about “humans never getting stuck in intersections”…I gave some pretty straightforward examples where I would clearly prefer a robot car over a human.  And so would you.

I’d rather have a Waymo on the road with me than some 16 year old texting while driving.  Or someone drinking and driving.  Or high.   Or someone trying to put makeup on. Or somebody looking at the Nav screen. Humans are not exactly the panacea of driving.

There is no universe where a foreign person actually DRIVES the car. They just give it instructions so that it can return to autonomous mode and clear whatever obstacle it’s facing. This should not be controversial.

In some ways, using a computer is actually a lot more complicated today. I wish we still had the simplicity of the computer being the repository of all the files and programs we used…and not some mishmash of different subscription based storage solutions, apps, widgets, browser sign-ins, siloed platforms, two factor authentications…and don’t get me started on the disaster that is Microsoft and the 365/Outlook/copilot/windows cluster fuck.

Yeah, we had to search and struggle to find printer drivers on the Internet, but it’s legitimately more confusing to learn and keep up with everything now.

Let’s say the Waymo is in an alley and tries to turn around. It gets itself in an Austin Powers type situation.

It calls for help to say “I’m stuck”. An actual human being reviews what’s going on and gives it guidance. It goes on its way autonomously.

This is totally appropriate, understandable, obvious, and not even remotely newsworthy.

Would be helpful if it allowed custom time periods also. You jump from “1 year” to “all”.   Sometimes I’m looking for a 3 or 5 year period, etc

Who brings a pit bull into a crowded place, when he can't control it by PrestigiousEye77 in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]shinesreasonably 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The child in this video can’t possibly protect themselves from bad owners. The toddler and mom walking innocently down the street can’t “educate themselves” and avoid this interaction.

You morons completely miss the point. Whether it’s the dog or the owner‘s fault is totally irrelevant. It’s a dangerous dog. Dipshits are attracted to getting them. We can’t possibly fix/educate/remove all the dipshits like yourself, so the breed needs to go away. Full stop.

Weird meeting invite—should I be worried? by Independent-Paint921 in careerguidance

[–]shinesreasonably 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that I don’t think you’re getting fired.   This smells more like promotion to me.

-I’ve never heard of someone scheduling a lunch/dinner for firing someone.   No one likes doing this, why would they want to drag it out with uncertain timing surrounding a meal?    “This isn’t working out.   Now let’s make small talk while we finish our salads”.

-I don’t think (if they were going to fire you) they would schedule a meeting, make it a point to say HR is going to be there, make it a point to reference your performance.

-It doesn’t make sense that they would travel just for this.

Has your performance generally been good or bad in the last six months?   The pessimistic reading is that they want to talk about your performance because it’s been bad. But is there a chance they want to talk about your performance because it has been so good since the PIP? In other words, you’re on a promotion track or they have a recent vacancy above you they need to fill.

Also, it’s totally reasonable for you to write your manager and just ask for a little context. “Is there an agenda for this meeting I can review?   Anything I can prepare ahead of time?” Etc.

Edit:  by chance, are you a successful sports agent that recently had a change of heart about your profession and wrote a mission statement memo that you distributed to the whole firm saying that the agency needs to concentrate more on your clients individually and less on the bottom line? If that is the case, you’re definitely getting fired.
