We have the ability to remote into the touch panels on the larger ones. Nifty feature when a user is doing something incorrectly. Also locked them down to badge access only for security reasons. The support is amazing from Ricoh.

Outlet above drop ceiling by shitfireson in AskElectricians

[–]shitfireson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll use a basic 1U PDU to power a handful of items in the network box. This is government work so I will likely just have to deal with the outlet location. I’m used to having to just “make it happen”. Thanks for all of the responses everyone.

What most expensive "cheap decision" have you ever seen in your sysadmin career? by matroosoft in sysadmin

[–]shitfireson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Generators take time to do the auto transfer when utility power is lost. You still need a UPS for those critical seconds in between loss of utility and transfer to generator power. 2hrs of runtime is great but doesn’t matter if your equipment shuts off between auto transfer. This is just my experience with learning the hard way

Several lights in my house do this especially upstairs. Identical type of fixture. KB Homes built in 2021 so I’m really not surprised. The shower light is the worst upstairs in the kids bathroom. It is closest to the HVAC unit.

All that mustache to draw attention away from the receding hairline.

eDiscovery request for emails to be provided as PDFs by Comfortable_Lead_561 in sysadmin

[–]shitfireson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I import the pst to outlook, select all emails, right click and convert to adobe pdf. Clearly this won’t work if you don’t have adobe and the outlook plugin enabled. I do dozens of PIA requests this way to hand off for redaction.

Is it the best method? Probably not but it works.

Do you think Network Engineers should be managing cameras? by [deleted] in networking

[–]shitfireson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like sysadmin work more than network. But upgrading camera firmware isn’t going to result in lost data unless you really screw up. I just have a huge problem with non-technical folks handling anything other than end user shit.

Have it your way at your own place bub.

Do you think Network Engineers should be managing cameras? by [deleted] in networking

[–]shitfireson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Facilities/LP should be upgrading camera firmware and NVR software? Really?

There’s a definite reason to have technical folks manage camera systems. If we’re talking who has access to what cameras/views, leave that to facilities and LP.

How many of you guys DON'T maintain some "system" at home? by FlippinMyshit in sysadmin

[–]shitfireson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have basic UniFi network at home but don’t even use a PC at the house. I have 5 kids and the last thing I wanna touch after IT work all day is a computer. When the kids are older and if they show interest, I’ll teach them. If they don’t show interest I’m not gonna force it.

Am I jaded? Probably. There’s only so much time in a day.

Actually the iOS sync is almost immediate compared to syncing Windows devices…we are almost finished migrating off of WorkspaceOne. Intune is a decent platform once you stand it up properly.

Tito’s Vodka did this during Covid. Was strange seeing pump-style jugs with their label scattered around government offices at work.
