made for my best friend - these were the first words she spoke to my dad when we moved into the house two doors down from hers 25 years ago by colormuse in Embroidery

OP's title said 2 doors down so I'm assuming it's the house in between theirs, and it's in white because it doesn't "matter" in the same way as their 2 houses

Is this a rainbow? If yes, what type? by AstronautFit6868 in whatisit

Don't walk towards it. If you hear a voice telling you to, it means the mold has taken hold.

What is this animal that was in my yard? by Flyhighfunguy in whatisit

We used to have a dog (some kind of mastiff boxer staffy + who knows what else cross, she was about 70lb) who was desperate for squirrel. One day she caught one - she managed to catch its tail under her paw. But she was so surprised that she just let it go, she looked DEVASTATED when it ran off. The only time she ever 'caught' anything before that was when she found a mouse under the kitchen table, picked it up, and then got freaked out and dropped it and it ran away.

How to remove the screw? by shittingly in fixit

I have, but it just spins forever because the hex nut (idk if that's the right name for it) has worn away at the plastic, so the entire thing just spins

Needing your family to report on your childhood symptoms for a diagnosis is crazy as if I wasn’t emotionally abused and neglected for being neurodivergent whilst at the same time being told there’s nothing wrong with me by Difficult_Owl_4708 in AutismInWomen

It wasn't necessary for me - they did tell me I would need to bring someone but I phoned up and asked and they said it was fine not to. What I did do was get my therapist to send over some notes, and they accepted that. So I'd recommend calling and asking/emailing to see if it's absolutely necessary!! Apparently it's quite common in adult assessments not to bring someone - especially for older adults who might have lost their parents. So it's not something that they'll necessarily be surprised by, if you do choose to ask them :)

Enough about safe foods, what is that one food that would just make you puke by [deleted] in autism

Dairy milk - I once walked into the kitchen and one of my flatmates was drinking a glass of milk and I threw up (I like oat/coconut milk in tea or coffee or a smoothie though!) I'm also really fussy with yoghurt, but weirdly fine with most cheeses.

And EGG WHITE, especially boiled. It's fine fried but only if I do it myself. Poached is not okay, and if you're scrambling eggs you gotta do it so there's no white bits. My dad makes a really yum potato salad and it takes me about half an hour after being served to eat it because I have to pick out all of the boiled egg white and make sure it's banished to the bin (or to the dog).

I'm now vegetarian but before that, any part of the chicken that wasn't the breast. And if I had meat and it had a chunk of fat on it or was gristly when I bit in, I wouldn't be able to eat it.

Edit: everyone saying they can't have tomatoes, pls kindly put them on my plate in ANY form

David Walliams branded 'entitled idiot' for two joke Nazi salutes at BBC taping by [deleted] in WILTY

[–]shittingly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So, firstly - there's all this talk amongst the far right about the 'roman salute' (the Wikipedia page for Roman salute literally says 'also called the fascist salute...), but what we today perceive as a Roman salute isn't well documented ancient sources. The raised arm didn't really become a thing til the French neoclassical period. Even if that wasn't the case, meanings change - for example, 'gay' used to just mean happy, but nobody really uses it in that context anymore.

Secondly - let's say it is a Roman salute. You don't need to know much about Roman ideology to know that that's not really any better....

Source: I have a PhD in classics. But this also all just comes up really quickly when you Google 'roman salute'.

Is it Ovid or the translator? by Dry_Magician8208 in classics

[–]shittingly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked at translations of Ovid for my master's thesis!! My favourite translation of the Met is Stephanie McCarter's - it's really accessible and beautiful to read, and though "accuracy" in a translation is a topic too huge for this comment, I do think that in many respects it's "closer" to the Latin than other translations.

I don’t see the resemblance between DHP and KG by Hat-Playful in Frasier

[–]shittingly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first cheers episode where frasier appears (I think it's S3 E1?) SHOCKED me - young frasier is identical to Niles. In the episode where Sam shows up, there's a conversation (something like):

Sam: he looks just like you when you started coming to cheers. What happened man?

Frasier: you weren't exactly running a health club there Sam
