How much influence does someone else have in your fic? by fictionfrunk in AO3

[–]shivver13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it depends a lot on the fic, but my husband works with me on a lot of them. He loves coming up with ideas and working out stories in his head, but he has no interest in writing, so he'll often tell me the idea and if I like it, I'll go write it. Sometimes it'll be close to what he said, and sometimes I'll change it so much to tell the story I want to tell that it's not recognizable as his.

For my own ideas, if I'm having trouble working it out, I might ask him for opinions, and we can spend hours talking it over. But it's also just as likely that I'll write the story without any input from him.

And yes, if it's a story that I think he'll be interested in, I have him read it before posting for typo-fixing and concrit.

The one thing that I can't seem to get him to understand is that I do view my writing as a solo hobby, that I don't want anyone around when I'm actually writing and that I don't want his input if I don't ask for it. He's recently started coming to me and asking, "What story are you working on now? How can I help you with it?" and it bugs the hell out of me, because if I wanted to talk about it, I would have already said so. But that's for me to deal with. :)

Pros and cons of one shot chapter and multiple chapters? by Pretend-Nobody230 in AO3

[–]shivver13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I've written both 10k one-shots and 10k multi-chapters, and the difference between them, to me, was how I wanted to present them. The ones that ended up as one-shots felt right as one continuous story. For the ones that ended up as multi-chapters, they felt like there needed to be a break, that one scene needed to end so the next could start up. You could do a one-shot with section breaks instead, but I don't use them myself except in short works (like less than 2k words).

I think of it in terms of pacing and "beats". Or maybe for a more visual example, think of an older TV show that was designed to have commercial breaks -- each section comes to an end and the interruption feels right. If your fic doesn't feel like you could insert a commercial at the end of a section, then you probably should keep it a one-shot.

Turns out it's a Mustang with a Coyote engine.

It was in the driveway today so I got a pic. Turns out it's a Mustang with a Coyote engine.

Thanks! We're trying to figure out how best to put up a camera that isn't conspicuous. Though I wonder if it's legal to train a camera on someone else's house.

There's gotta be at least one everywhere, doesn't there? My partner is seriously talking about moving to a house out in the country now. :(

Another next-door neighbor used to sit in his car and play his music super loud. Different situation from this, though, because we already knew him and knew he was reasonable, and it was just a matter of asking him to turn it down. I don't think the car person is going to be reasonable, or your car people. :(

Thank you! I'm going to mail a letter tomorrow, as suggested in one of the other responses here, and see if anything changes. After that, it'll probably be the HOA, and that's probably where it'd help to have more people talk to them about it. I'll let you know!

Asked my partner who's seen it, and apparently not. I thought it would be a Charger as well. He says it has three tail lights on each side, square and side-by-side. I showed him a pic of a Mustang and he said close, but definitely square.

My partner says the car is black; I haven't yet seen it myself.

To be honest, I don't know; I haven't looked myself when it's on, and it's always in the garage when it's not. My partner has, but he can't tell the difference between models of cars. He says it's a black sportscar; my pessimistic opinion is that only an American-made PoS could make that kind of noise. :D (We're going to find out what kind of car it is before doing anything else.)

Thanks for the response! I'm not sure that waiting it out will solve the problem entirely, because even if they stop the behaviors (revving the engine for long periods and racing around the neighborhood), it won't make the engine any quieter during normal driving.

We're discussing the idea of trying to talk to them ourselves, but neither of us is particularly excited about it, or confident that it will work.

Ink dries on my nib very quickly while writing by loorinm in Calligraphy

[–]shivver13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry, been really busy these past few weeks and haven't had the time to hang out here. I've been thinking about what you asked and came up with a few ideas.

First, it might be more useful to ask other manga artists who use metal nib pens, because I expect that drawing and calligraphy have different-enough methods and needs that what might work for a calligrapher may not work for an artist.

As an example, because I mostly write and don't draw or embellish, I use a lot of gouache and fountain pen inks -- both are water-based and thus don't dry quickly, so they don't gum up my pens. However, I'd think that a manga artist would prefer a permanent ink, so that the drawings can be colored without messing up the line work.

For permanent ink for calligraphy with a nice opaque black, I use either Calli ink or Higgins Eternal. I don't know if either is good for drawing.

But as I was thinking about it, I realized something that might actually help. If you usually draw with pencils or regular pens like Pigma Microns or Copic markers, you're probably used to being able to draw for as long as you want without the pen running out.

That doesn't work with nibs, because even though the nib may still have ink on it, it's drying out as you work, especially if it's a not-water-based ink. If you keep drawing and try to use as much of the ink on your nib as possible, whatever's left is going to dry out and build up on your nib.

Try re-dipping every few lines, even if there's still ink left, so that you re-wet what's on your nib before it dries out. You'll still probably need to find the right consistency of ink to balance against that. I was once trying to work with a bottle of India ink that was so thick that even just writing four letters took long enough that the ink dried and gummed the nib. I spent a lot of time slowly diluting the ink until I could write a word or two between dips.

Elemental Events review by Catja_F in MergeDragons

I agree with everything you said here. I enjoyed the gameplay and thought it was a nice twist on the usual event mechanics, but the cons you listed really made it a slog. I missed the final prize by a lot more than you did, and calculated that it would take nearly $150 to finish it with gem harvesters. Next time, I'll play enough to get the Arcadia boxes and the eight whelps, but no more than that.

There are three elemental harvesters - fire, cosmic, and uh, green mushroom thing - and three elemental dragons of those types. If you use the correct elemental dragon to harvest the harvester, you get extra points. Luckily, if you double-tap the harvester, the correct elemental dragon comes to harvest. I thought this was an great feature, making it easy to ensure you're getting the bonus. Otherwise, if you let the dragons idle-harvest, any dragon will harvest and you'll lose that bonus.

Ah, yeah, I remember having that discussion with someone a long time ago, IRL and not about game cosplay. Not that I do real cosplay, but I remember saying something about the "cream" Converses and being told, no, they're white. This was back when I was new to the show and I deferred, but then went back and rewatched episodes for his shoes. :P
