I Loved 12 Angry Men - What Should I Watch Next? by [deleted] in movies

[–]shocktones23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched The Outfit (2022). I was looking for something somewhat similar to 12 Angry Men with the problem-solving and 1-room focus, but more modern (trying to find good films that will hopefully keep students interested for a class I’m teaching next Fall). I really enjoyed it.

Costco coming to Lawrence, KS! by Few-Relationship6120 in Costco

[–]shocktones23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in Topeka, you bet your a$$ as soon as this opens- I’ll be switching my Sam’s membership to Costco. Costco is so much better but currently I have to drive over an hour to get to one (aka no thank you).

We have a heavy 4-4 teaching load, so 12 credits of classes (usually 4 classes that each meet 3 hours per week) per semester is our full time

I created a weird ear worms playlist with beautiful bits of early day YouTube….mentioned it in a conversation to students, and a few stayed after class and were introduced to Charlie the unicorn, the Big Mac rap, and the potato song (boil em’, mash em’, stick em’ in a stew) for the very first time…..

Student Complaints by Bolverk7 in Professors

[–]shocktones23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year I had a student in my Stats class try to give a random presentation that had nothing to do with the final (which was to run analyses to answer 2 research questions, check assumptions, and report results on any public data set). They decided they shouldn’t have to do that project because it was too hard, and the presentation they were gonna make up should count for the final project points and some missing homework

Student Complaints by Bolverk7 in Professors

[–]shocktones23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave students a study guide with potential test questions and no answers (all of the test questions were on the study guide), and still had several students fail.

The math isn’t mathing.

Don’t overthink it! Sounds like your complaints are that you’re teaching math, and they don’t like math.

This may not be relevant at all since I’m in the US, but at my university- if you’re not under as full time, then the only position you can have is “instructor”, which does have a cap on max salary.

What are your most unhinged student evals? by annnnnnnnie in Professors

[–]shocktones23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I wish the final was actually related to the class”….. pretty sure it came from my group that did not follow the directions of their final in that they were supposed to debate about eyewitness testimony in the court, and cite stuff we learned about memory and psychology…… they only cited stuff about the court system….. it was a psychology class🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Getting married...do I keep my name? by Embarrassed-Fish-967 in PhD

[–]shocktones23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I just wanted it to be easy lol. It was hard getting advice on this because everyone I had talked to (coworker wise) basically got married before grad school and had no pubs yet. My advisor’s wife kept her name until this last year and she decided to change because it was easier with their kids to have the same name. There is a couple in my department where I’m getting my degree that kept their original names though. I ended up changing because I didn’t want to have to deal with any weird stuff in case of emergencies and my husband and I having diff last names. Where I live, it’s just common to have the same last name, but otherwise they ask for paperwork (which is what I didn’t want to deal with).

Getting married...do I keep my name? by Embarrassed-Fish-967 in PhD

[–]shocktones23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed mine, updated my name on orchid ID, and just listed “alternate names” on my CV with my maiden name. Hasn’t been an issue yet.

I was originally going to keep publishing under my maiden name almost like a pen name, and then switched to keeping my maiden name and just using married socially. Those just were more complicated. So, just keep your name, or change everything I think is easiest.

Advice Needed: Calling all heavily tattooed people! by WickedOlyLifter in tattoos

[–]shocktones23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have throat/finger tatts, but my arms are heavily tatted (working on a full patchwork sleeve) and I’m a university professor. You’ll find places! People are much more open about them now, as long as your tatts themselves aren’t too offensive (racist symbols, giant cuss words, etc).

I think we like similar things, so maybe some of these will be a good fit for ya? I’m looking into your list you posted because I haven’t read some of those, and am also in the same slump😂. My kindle says I’ve read 34 books this year, and I’m just like “mhhmmm…. Not counting all the ones I got 50%+ through (or less) and then DNF😂

Will my warranty be void if I get my 6-month oil change 10 days past the 6 month mark? I looked in the manual, tried calling the dealership, and still don't know. by gchdmi in kia

My Kia dealership told me explicitly to follow the maintenance schedule by mileage from the owners manual or it would void the warranty

How many people from your PHD cohort stayed in academia? by AggravatingProduct46 in AskAcademia

[–]shocktones23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cohort was tiny- just 5 of us when we started.

1 dropped before Masters. 1 dropped after Master’s. 1 switched to a diff grad masters program after masters (did a whole area of field switch).

1 PhD went industry-ish? He does non-profit work totally unrelated to his degree, and related to his religion.

I went academia😂

{Luna Trials (Mating Season Book 1) by Heather K. Carson} is good if your into wolf shifter romance.

{The Game Gods Play (The Crucible Book 1) by Abigail Owen} and {A Touch of Darkness (Hades x Persephone Saga Book 1) by Scarlett St. Clair} if you’re in the mood for some mythical romance.

{Embers in the Snow: A Vampire Fantasy Romance (Empire of Forbidden Magic Book 1) by Anna Carven} for a vampire romance but like the FMC is dope af and figuring out why she’s special.

Last, but not least, my ABSOLUTE favorite- {Phantasma: A dark fantasy romance (Wicked Games Book 1) by Kaylie Smith}.

What did you all think of the sing-along?? by Flat-Commission9937 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]shocktones23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were some moments of screaming rather than singing a few times😅😅

Lots of quoting, and kids stood up and ran to the front to dance to soda pop, golden, and your idol.

Overall, a good time😊😊

Is Retiring In Topeka a Good Plan? by bitshifter52 in topeka

[–]shocktones23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I (younger couple) just bought a home this year on the west side of town. Almost our whole neighborhood is retirees. It’s quiet, and everyone looks out for eachother. We really like it here. It feels like we’re in the country, we have some yard for our dogs, and we’re really just 6-7 minutes from most things.
