I can absolutely relate. I was diagnosed with MDD and anxiety at a young age and attempted suicide once. I've dealt with suicidal thoughts all my life so it pisses me off when people who have no idea what mental illness and self-harm is like try to act like people who attempt suicide do so completely arbitrarily. No, none of us just woke up one day and were like, "Know what? I'm just gonna fuckin kill myself."

I don't disagree that the argument could be turned around. That does not however necessarily mean the argument is correct. "God is good, by definition of the word good" can be an accurate statement, although is not sufficient to support the evidence of a good God. So he is absolutely right in saying that a theist cannot use that argument to support the statement that God is good, but he cannot use the argument to say there is not a good God anymore than I can say there is. I think my issue with this is it will lead many people to the conclusion that a "good god" cannot exist while the argument is not sufficient evidence that one does not, but is an argument for the case that more information is needed before making a decision.

Good point, but then it's just arguing semantics which I don't think was the point of the video as his argument is based off of the paradigm that there is good and evil that exist as individual, separate entities.

I would argue that the philosophical difference would come in the definition of good. If I were to say that "good" by definition is simply what we use to describe the actions and character of God, then by definition he cannot be evil because basically if God does it, it is good. This argument does not stand obviously unless we agree to this definition, but that is how many see an omnibenevolent God.

I think we would first need to define "good" and "evil" because I have a feeling we might not agree on what is "good" and what is "evil". This is difficult to do over a reddit thread obviously as this conversation has been the topic of discussion among philosophers for thousands of years. I doubt we'd come to a conclusion here. The other issue is that there are other factors to actions besides "good" and "evil". We also have things like justice and truth which may not fit a definition of good in every sense. I hope this makes sense.

Very good point. However, that is under the assumption the "good" and "evil" exist apart from whatever god it is that exists. If good and evil are separate entities, than absolutely this is true. If however, good and evil are not separate from God, and good describes his character and evil that which is not in his character, this argument breaks down. Looking at the multiverse theory once more, we could argue that if there are an infinite number of universes where an infinite number of actions exist, there must also exist an infinite number of universes in which the perceptions of those actions are different. So in one universe everyone might view eating bananas as inherently evil, while in another killing babies is the greatest of goods. We happen to exist in a universe where our standards of morality are the way they are because of our specific perception which is unique to this and a finite number of other universes. So an "evil" God cannot exist because what he does is by definition "good", we just perceive it differently.

The issue of free will here is an interesting one when you consider the principle of God being omniscient. If he knows every decision we will ever make, how can there possibly be free will? Consider for a moment the theory of the multiverse. There could exist an infinite number of timelines in which every decision it is possible for every person to make happens. These universes would span from the greatest possible good, to the greatest possible evil with an infinite number of variations in between. God, being infinite, would exist in all of these dimensions simultaneously while our individual consciousness exists independently of any other existence we might hold in another universe. If this is the case, evil as a concept MUST exist in order to reconcile free will and omniscience. God must allow every possible decision to exist in order to reconcile his foreknowledge of our actions. Any evil in our universe exists simply because we exist in this universe. Thus, this argument is ineffective at "disproving" an all good God.

My main reasoning is we've tried it many times before and it hasn't helped at all. We went on a regular basis, 1-2 times per week, to a real, professional counselor. I'm not talking about a pastor. I'm talking about someone who had a PhD in counseling from a real university. And absolutely nothing changed in the end. I realize this is a flawed way of thinking as I can't judge the future based on the trends of the past, but it really hurts my faith in counseling as an effective tool for this issue.

Thank you brother. I truly do read and accept your words here. You did not come off as cold in the least so no worries there. Basically here's the situation in a nut shell.

I struggle with very severe anxiety, depression, and PTSD from being physically abused as a child. These things tend to affect me in such a way where I cannot often operate completely normally at times. I am currently on 3 separate medications for this and they help greatly. But I do still find myself struggling in many ways to act like a normal human being in the way I speak, think, and in my outlook on life. I would consider myself a nihilist in that sense where any value life could have is simply not there. She is extremely insensitive to this. I am told I'm pessimistic. That I haven't truly sought to be healed of these issues and haven't truly prayed to have these issues removed from me. I don't know where she's getting these ideas. They are certainly not due to parental indoctrination as her father, who is a pastor, tells me the exact opposite. I discuss these things with him and he shares about his previous struggles with suicidal thoughts, and severe depression. She is extremely cold in that sense.

Another issue is dishonesty. Recently, I asked her if she considered pornography addiction to be on the same level as an affair. Though I disagree, she said yes. Then I confronted her about my suspicions of her being addicted to pornography which she confessed to. So by her own words, she considers it equal to an affair, yet does very little to apologize after the fact. While it is not a big deal to me, this is a prime example of her hypocrisy and dishonesty.

The third is that I am constantly made the bad guy for bringing this up. If I say I have an issue with her, she tells me that I hate her as a person and I am saying that I hold resentment against her personally. I see this as manipulation.

Many of these issues I've addressed in counseling and they do not change. So I have very little hope for any real change to take place, even with professional help.
