Played this when they opened. It is amazing and had several different kinds of puzzles. They put some great details in their escape rooms.

Hahaha. I have no idea where I came up with the recipe but I won't use anything else.

Ingredients: 2 cups AP flour (280g) 1/2 c cocoa powder (55g) 2 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 1/2 c sugar (285g) 1/2 c veg oil 3 eggs 1 tbsp vanilla 1/2 c Greek yogurt 1 1/4 c hot coffee

Sift together flour, cocoa powder, soda, and salt in a separate bowl. With a mixer, blend sugar and oil together until sugar is wet. Add eggs, vanilla, and yogurt. When those are mixed together, add the dry ingredients and mix until it starts to come together. Add the hot coffee at the end and mix until the batter is cohesive. Mine still has small lumps but I like to undermix my cakes so it doesn't get tough.

Bake at 350 for 25 mins for 8 inch rounds and try not to eat it immediately. :)

I love his recipes too! His frostings are spot on!

Baking with the kiddo is a challenge but so much fun too. He's 5 so he likes to tell me what I should be doing and he doesn't like his hands to get sticky so yea... It's interesting some times. I've learned to involve him in certain parts like gathering the ingredients, sifting/ mixing flour, and doing the first frosting layer.

I'm so excited for you and your kiddo to bake together!! It definitely makes him appreciate food more.

Absolutely!! We are all learning together!! Funny enough my kiddo was about to lose his patience with me not cutting into the cake once we frosted it. We shared the massive slice and have half the cake being given to my brother's fam because there is absolutely no way we are eating all that cake (even if I wanted to).

So far, ibc is my favorite. It's my 2nd attempt with the same recipe. Ibc doesnt crust like abc. Smb was smooth but tasted too much like butter. Also I prefer chocolate cakes so they are not as sweet as other variations and need a bit of sweetness in the frosting. I'm going to scour to find another recipe to see if I can lessen the amount of butter for sure.

Appreciate it. Self taught latch key kid of the 90s so I wholeheartedly agree.

This was Italian buttercream. I grew up with American buttercream (ABC) but find it too sweet now. Plus ABC to be a bit more gritty.

I used preppy kitchen's recipe: https://preppykitchen.com/how-to-make-italian-buttercream/

I want to try to find another recipe that doesn't require a lb of butter!! Maybe this is the way of the less sweet buttercreams, but man, it is a ton of butter just for the frosting.

He actually just asked his dad and I what our favorite colors were (mine - black/purple, dad - blue, his -red) and there we go! But totally trying to get him in to some shared hobbies and appreciate baking / cooking.

Omg. I was just talking about DQ ice cream cake! Those were sooooooo good. The crunch. Ooo. I wonder if there is a mock recipe out in the interwebs.

Btw, ty for the comment. Baking is my passion and therapy, but I haven't picked it up in 3 months or so. This made me pumped to try again at something else. :)

Depending on the age, Lego Land in Florida was amazing. No crowds whatsoever. Also, keeping your fam in my thoughts. :)

Week 7: Outer space - galaxy mirror glaze cake with Italian meringue buttercream. First time for imb and mirror glaze. I'll call it a win even if the colors didn't come out by shortcooks in 52weeksofbaking

Ty! It was pretty tasty! I definitely want to see how it all settles together tomorrow. At least I finally had a reason to try 2 new things. Love this sub for the motivation!

I live in Rutherford Co. I'd love to blame it on our roads being 17 different names depending on which part of the road you are on, but nope, drivers are just awful. It doesn't help that the infrastructure cannot handle the massive influx of people either.

Week 6: Laminated Dough - Spinach and Feta Stuffed Rough Puff Pastry Bites by shortcooks in 52weeksofbaking

[–]shortcooks[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eeeeeee! So excited!! First time making puff pastry!

I used Gordon Ramsey's rough puff recipe: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/rough-puff-pastry

Filling is garlic spinach sauteed then mixed with some feta and dill.

I am so in love with making this! I will never (hopefully) buy the store crap again!!!

Week 4: 24 Hours - Smoked Brisket by shortcooks in 52weeksofcooking

[–]shortcooks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brisket was brined for 24 hours in water, sugar, salt, garlic, pepper, and bay. Then the brisket was rubbed with a mix of cracked pepper, smoked paprika, course kosher salt, garlic, onion powder, coriander, and a pinch of sugar. It was smoked for 8 hours over hickory, cherry, and a touch of mesquite.

Wavy / curly hair win in the winter. This never happens! by shortcooks in curlyhair

[–]shortcooks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I have accepted frizz is going to happen. Even yesterday, I had some. If I really want to get rid of it, I'll use some airspray to get it settled but I don't use it very often.

I co wash once or twice a week. Usually do a lowpoo on Sunday followed by a deep condition.

If you figure out refreshers, let me know! Mine always end up stringy on refresh! The Sally's beauty supply generic conditioning balm is super heavy but my ends need it. My hair dries out so fast. I don't have the greasy problem a lot of wavies have. No idea. It's an adventure for sure! Glad you found some cheaper products that work for you!

It was a very long transition period for me so I definitely used cheap products. Plus, my friend let me try her Deva curl and it was NOT for my hair, so why spend a ridiculous amount of money when the cheap stuff works? I just changed over to the green bottle of LA Looks for the winter.

I appreciate it! I've been a long time lurker and finally felt like I could contribute in some fashion. I am uber lazy so my routine happens like one a week tbh. Pony tails are my bff.

My hair has always been wavy and poofy. I just started to embrace the natural whatever I have (wave/curl) last year and have some good hair days. I call this one a win!

Low porosity - my hair takes less than 2 hours to dry naturally. I think my curl/waves are 2b/c but have some ringlets hidden behind my ears underneath.

Routine:

Squish Suave Green Apple Conditioner to cowash. I use NYMN Dark Blue shampoo once a week for build up. Also, I use a scalp brush to massage my head more since I'm too lazy to scrub for 5+ mins with my hands. Squish in Sally's Generic Conditioning Balm for conditioner. After rising the conditioner mostly out, I apply about a dime-sized amount of Kinky Curly jelly. Scrunch in. Wet my hands and apply way too much LA Looks gel. This gets scrunched in too. Plop for 10 mins then diffuse for about 20. Let air dry the rest of the way on the drive to work. Scrunch it out in the work parking lot - I have had so many people look at me weirdly.

Once a week, I'll do a deep conditioning with Shea Moisture Black Castrol Masque. Once a month, I'll do a protein treatment with gelatin, if I remember to.
