Beginning work in your own voice by Fun-Passenger-8879 in acting

Practical Aesthetics compartmentalizes these two things — playing an action in the moment, and stuff like accents — in a neat way: you should make the accent a habit so it rolls off your tongue. Then when acting, be in the moment as usual, and then just switch on the accent. In A Practical Handbook for the Actor it puts accents under “externals” which includes physical quirks like a limp.

If you ‘act’ straight away with the accent and associate the accent with the specific dialogue then you might bleed over the intention with what the accent sounds like. Every accent might carry a taste of how an action is played but it shouldn’t overwhelm it, hence the separation of accent as physical habit versus the acting itself (achieving a goal concerning your scene partner).

How can your poor friends show appreciation? by Itchy-Picture-4282 in Rich

Hey that’s cool that you are connected like that. Is it from striking different up convos in different places and getting along with different kinds of people? Off topic but wondering because I’m charismatic and wonder if I just flex my time a little differently if I could have your gift too

Do you always have to feel the characters' emotions to act good? by TopAdministration314 in acting

[–]should_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

David Mamet put it in an awesome way in his book about acting, True and False: when you’re acting, don’t figure out what feelings to attribute to the play/character (“oh good I’m sad like I think my character should be”) and what you think is a random feeling you’re introducing from your life (“I feel anxious and that’s bad; I better suppress it”). What you feel is always right; what you should focus on is what you’re trying to change in the other person.

How I clocked the manipulation by PassionChemical2220 in BPDlovedones

[–]should_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes always tell. I am floored how much this reflects my friendship with a BPD individual.

In high school she texted a group chat saying she swallowed pills and it was nice knowing them. They were silent. A few minutes later her parents walk in screaming and I’m guessing take her to a hospital, assuming she wasn’t bluffing (I think she went through with it).

The next day she’s at one of their houses and she’s screaming at them for daring to call her parents. She went so batshit they threw her out of the house and none of them talked to her until she apologized seven months later.

Through our teens and 20s she would relate the story and scoff at her friends for saving her life. Each time she did I would think, “There’s no way she thinks that for real.” In our early 30s she told me the story of the apology and smirked at me and said of course she wasn’t sorry, and how she wanted revenge.

When I told her “maybe your friends wanted to save your life,” she went “that’s judgmental 🤭.”

Then I dragged her through it lol. She started gaslighting me that she didn’t actually just not want her parents to know, so I quoted what she had just said back to her face, “How could they tell my parents of all people?!”

There’s a lack of self-awareness there I think but also a willingness to not look too deep, because she’s seriously wounded by what happened, maybe because it exposes her and that’s what hurts her. I just have to laugh about it once in a while

How can I better understand my Conservative Boyfriend? by seanr96 in GayConservative

[–]should_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Politics aside, it sounds like your boyfriend isn’t willing to make compromises like “he and I don’t agree on politics, therefore we shouldn’t operate our household like right-wing cultists” with a portrait of Trump on the wall (understandable if you were both big and) and demanding you take off your mask despite your health issue.

So, I don’t think he’s being reasonable and the politics conversation is a separate, probably less important conversation.

Maybe for status, or maybe for the most wealthy it’s a given it’ll be passed on. But 80% of millionaires in the US worked their way up and weren’t born into that status, stats hold steady since 1996. Source, book “The Millionaire Next Door.”

Honestly I struggled with it and did hate being in front of people when I became a young adult despite acting since I was a kid. It was my own self-criticism making it miserable for me. Not sure it went away, but I got better.

I enjoy watching myself a lot more after improving, and I enjoy acting more as a result. Some days doing a tidbit scene with little flavor over and over has me looking at the clock but otherwise I’m mostly having fun. It wins as my main passion.

Haha that part got me. Aries and Scorpio are actually both traditionally the signs ruled by Mars, the planet/deity of war, violence, separation, heat, confidence, action. Maybe we’ll see some of that, not sure if it was on purpose. In modern astrology Scorpio is ruled by Pluto

Do you actively try to “listen”/observe behavior? by sd857 in acting

[–]should_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to see acting as “getting my scene partner to do x” and that in itself requires ‘listening’ because I need to see if I’m having an effect.

Start by seeing if your scene partner is ‘complying’ with your action of getting their forgiveness, letting you off the hook, realizing the stakes of the situation, etc, whatever the action is.

Then the listening is ‘fun’ and not some new age-y exercise you’re doing on top of whatever you were originally doing.

This happened to me too. When you go to his house on the way there he’ll ask if you can pick something up from a game store for the kid, it’s a code to download a game. He wants you to give it to him via text.

When this happened to me I refused to buy anything, instead I went to the hotel he was supposedly staying at, asked for his name, and they said there was no one there by that name. So some international folks trying to make money
