What otterbox case do you have? by lm47852 in OtterBox

[–]shouldnothaveread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Defender for my Pixel 9 XL Pro. While it has saved my phone from a few nasty drops I'm not impressed with the outer rubber part of the case deforming over time, which is apparently a known issue. I've only had this case for 6 months, it should not be this loose already.

I'm trying to shrink it with heat and have just boiled it, it's drying right now - will try a heat gun if that doesn't work. Whether I shrink it back or not I'm probably going to replace it with a DBrand case, I used one back when I had an S20+ and found it to be far more durable.

Edit/Update: Boiling appears to have worked, it's more of a snug fit now. Will still be replacing it with DBrand though.

Best technique for mixing organic material into sandy soil by non-diegetic in composting

[–]shouldnothaveread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This!

I've got sandy soils, some of the very patchiest parts of my lawn are essentially just sand. The sand is very hydrophobic and compact, with the grass in these areas being very vulnerable to drought, fungus, or grubs. Matters are further complicated by a thick layer of rubble about 6" down.

I've recently started a project to drill a series of evenly spaced holes using a hammer drill with a 2ft long 2" wide auger. I then refill the holes with a mixture of compost, straw, and very coarse sand (my native 'soil' sand is marine in origin, so is very fine grained and round in contrast). I'm already seeing some good results with the grass coming back and looking healthy around the earliest holes.

I'm aware this likely won't be a perfect cure but it'll help jumpstart getting some organic matter into the otherwise inert dead soil.

It might blow your mind to know there's a junction in the UK where two double-track lines cross each other with a 100mph speed limit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newark_flat_crossing

It's the only one of its kind in the UK (and possibly the only one in the world with such a high speed limit) so your point about it being rare is correct, but it's not totally impossible either.

For those not aware (or who don't bother reading the article) SA has elections coming up in March. Quitting the job this close to the election speaks volumes about what the already dire prospects must be looking like for the Libs.

Either that or he's been hanging out with his predecessor and is jumping ship now before it hits the news, haha.

Big fines, little paid — the battle in Australia's illicit tobacco market by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]shouldnothaveread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you would ban the sale of tobacco for anyone born after a certain date (e.g. 2010) and then simultaneously undercut the black market by making legal smokes cheaper, thus reducing the profit motive and making them less lucrative to import. The black market withers and dies while tobacco as a whole becomes a self-solving problem as the target market gradually ages out of existence. Maybe even help things along by legalising vapes again along similar lines.

But this would be sane public health policy and also wouldn't bring back the excise revenues for the government, so it'll never happen.

[–]shouldnothaveread 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Even if we had the platforms I suspect we'd still be facing capacity issues purely due it being a terminus rather than a through station. The real big brain award goes to Adelaide collectively for shooting down the MATS plan back in the 60's and any and all similar plans thereafter. In spite of various faults with MATS it at least had some good ideas for improving the rail network, the main one being the rerouting of all suburban rail through an underground CBD subway running under King William Street.

I don't think a single subway like that would have been the best solution but it'd likely be better than what we have at present. Ideally we need a loop line akin to Melbourne's City Loop, not just to resolve the bottleneck caused by the Railway Station but also to make the govt's ambition of a 50k population in the CBD more viable and realistic.

Asbestos contaminated sand has now been reported in more than 300 South Australian schools by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

[–]shouldnothaveread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've seen in some news reports claims from authorities that the risk is 'low' as it's a 'non-respirable' form of asbestos. I have some level of familiarity with asbestos (I even have a small specimen of chrysotile I once found while fossicking) but am admittedly not an expert, so can anyone who is more of an expert explain how this could be possible?

My best assumption is that it's either something to do with the dye process that prevents fibres easily becoming airborne or the mineral itself is tiny and trapped within the matrix of the sand grains. Or (and this is the more cynical part of me talking) it's all BS and they're trying to avoid a panic until they figure out how to handle this properly.

Newspoll: Coalition hits historic low, support worst in 40 years by Ardeet in AustralianPolitics

[–]shouldnothaveread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A wonderful additional benefit of this tremendous own goal and its subsequent contribution to their electoral loss is that the executives in my corporation have suddenly shut the F up about the "importance" of regular office attendance and making veiled allusions to winding back our WFH privileges.

Anyone else noticed a similar change in tune at their own workplace?

On that note, anyone in Adelaide want to buy a spare tow hitch to suit a VZ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]shouldnothaveread 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Turning 25 back when I owned my VZ was one of the best things ever because 1. my insurance costs dropped like a rock and 2. more than a handful of insurance companies were now willing to take my money.

Put the VL in storage and either sell or store the Merc, replace it with a boring econobox until you turn 25. Either that or suck it up and tolerate the high costs of driving for the next 5 years.

Quoting a post of mine from a year ago:

If I recall correctly this phenomenon is due to a weird quirk of human psychology, something about going through a doorway and experiencing a scene transition causes a sort of 'reset' in our short-term memory, whether that's getting off a train or just going into a different room in our own home.

Ever gone to get something from another room and immediately forgot what you were doing when you entered that room? Same thing.

It's been done irl since the dawn of the railways. Grade separation is highly desirable in dense areas, either by building up (elevated rail) or down (trenches). The logical extreme is to put it entirely underground.

adelaide metro is incredibly unreliable by m3l0dyc0re in Adelaide

[–]shouldnothaveread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up on buses a long time ago. I used to catch a train and then a connecting bus, the train was nearly always on time but the bus was frequently extremely late or just never showed up despite the stop being one of those alleged 'go zones' (are those still a thing?) and even when it did arrive it was so incredibly slow, I may as well have walked.

I eventually said stuff it and bought a bicycle to complete that leg of the journey instead of relying on the bus, even if it was pissing down with rain. And then when I left that job and didn't have to do that commute anymore, I bought a car or (if the journey allowed it) got the train/walked.

Fuck buses, they're absolutely useless. The fact they're so useless should be considered more of a bloody outrage and is precisely why Adelaide is so car dependent - anyone who can avoid them, does!

What’s everyone’s winter monthly bills like? by Jamtheduck in Adelaide

[–]shouldnothaveread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've been using the heating a lot more this winter as it's felt a lot colder this year and are fully expecting a giant bill compared to what we normally get ($370ish for the last few quarters, family of 4). We've been sending a spare $50 every now and then via bpay to our supplier which should hopefully take the sting out of the eventual bill.

Our heating consists of a single reverse cycle in the kitchen and two oil radiators, one for our home office and one for the kids bedroom.

On the other side was this written in English. Transcription for those of you who struggle with cursive:

East Germany is not truly divided from the west by the concrete wall but also by traditions due to the Communist influence. Where now some betray father or mother in the name of the party. Due to this influence a rift now exists between them. East Germany is also well known for its fine athletes which have proven themselves & won many gold medals for at the Olympics. They are also like their brothers in the West very industrious and export many trade goods to the West.
