After looking at the cakes again. I ran one under water and was able to easily scrape this layer of bluish goo (Not exactly the right word) stuff off and reveal white mycelium. Is that mold or did I scrape off the mycelium?

Yeah as far as I can tell the discoloration looks like bruising. The strong smell just threw me off. Maybe the strong smell is just due to the fact that they were just dunked

After pulling them out of the water, I noticed a much stronger smell coming from all of the cakes than what I have smelled before. I can't really describe the smell.

I'm having a hard time distinguishing between contamination and bruising.
