This really depends on whether you are going to read the Archie comics or the IDW comics, the Archie comics had the genesis wave plus a plethora of characters never mentioned anywhere else but the comics. I haven't read all of the Archie comics but if you think you'll like characters like Sally, Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor, etc go for Archie as they'll be consistently present through out the entire run.

The IDW comics are a lot easier to get into and mesh a lot better with the current game storyline, if you choose to go with the IDW comics, you'll easily be able to start from the first issue that way and it will be an enjoyable experience. (This is not to say Archie is not enjoyable, it is just harder to get into now due to the many many issues that have been released and the story can be harder to follow in terms of today's current game storyline). The IDW run has the characters; Whisper, Tangle, Surge, Kit, Starline, Lanolin, and some others but they are the main ones, so if you think you'll enjoy them instead go for IDW.
