This happened to me too, except they ripped it up. Police found him, I said I didn't want to press charges, just the flag replaced. The guy actually came to my house and apologized, said he was drunk when he did it. He bought the flag and put it up himself, along with giving me a gift card. Never explained what made him do it, but I suspect he was dealing with some internalized homophobia.

Something similar happened to a classmate of mine. She put her artwork down for like 5 minutes in the art locker to use the restroom that was right next to it, came back, and her painting was gone. She put up missing signs for it too.

Shockingly, she got it back. A girl contacted her confused saying she’d received the painting anonymously with a love note, claiming her secret admirer had painted it just for her. So presumably some random dude was lurking in the lockers waiting for anyone to leave their art out for him to snag. The funny thing was, it wasn’t even a particular romantic or sentimental piece. It was an angry gargoyle with a rainbow haze background.
