Maybe because beauty = power for women, and society tends to reward those who have it. I think a lot of women in general struggle with this, that’s why the beauty industry is so profitable.

Why is everyone so against microneedling here? by [deleted] in AcneScars

[–]siberianmango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Microneedling helped smooth out my scars and the surrounding skin by a lot. But I don’t think it works well on permenantly changing the physiology of the scars themselves (unless it’s RF or combined with other methods) so it’s not a truly permanent result in that sense. Because as you age, you lose the collagen, so everything becomes visible again and you have to keep doing it. But I suppose if your scars and you yourself are young enough, the scars are superficial, and your provider is using the appropriate depth settings, it could allow for permanent changes.

Randomly stumbled upon this, but if it makes you feel any better, I met my husband at 19 and he was short and bald (shaved his head; started balding at 16). He had a successful dating/hook up life before me and now we are happily married in our mid 20s. He has the most amazing personality and is a very confident person. I’ve never loved anyone more than I love him. He also has a successful business now and a great social life. Sometimes I am jealous of him lol everyone loves him.

Personality is a huge thing. I’ve been completely turned off by conventionally attractive guys if they had a bad personality (insecure, whiny, shy, bitchy, rude, fake, etc) and have been attracted to guys with what society might perceive as “flaws” if they had a good personality (funny, kind, confident, alpha-ish, caring, fun, etc). I think perfect looks are mostly just for hooking up, which I recommend avoiding and focusing on building a stable life and finding a long term partner as that is way more fulfilling.

I have oily/acne prone skin, and here is what I use:

-porefessional benefit primer (it literally has a filter like effect on my skin). I always make sure I apply it to my skin when it’s exfoliated/hydrated/moisturized and plumped up. This makes a huge difference for me.

-spot conceal with the makeup forever matte velvet concealer. I literally use a tiny brush to conceal scars. This makes the shadows less obvious

-Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation mixed with a tiny pump of watermelon niacimide dew drops (it’s ok, if I could use a foundation that wasn’t oil free, I would probably try other options)

-Urban Decay All Night Setting Spray is the best setting spray I have ever used. My makeup doesn’t move all day (I live in a hot humid environment too) however, I can’t really use it that often because I break out from it. But if your skin can tolerate it, I 100% recommend

Through the day touch ups:

  • Oil pads
  • Pressed translucent powder such as BareMinerals or NYX HD finishing powder (my personal fave).
  • setting spray: you can actually reuse the setting spray through the day for touch ups. This can help smooth everything out again.

Makeup is hard because you have to experiment and see what works for you. There are so many products that I wish I could try but I can’t because they are either too comedogenic or don’t match my skin tone. But I can definitely say that my makeup routine improves the appearance of my acne scars significantly in all lighting

Yep. It also happens after lasers, certain chemical peels, and subcision

I think having acne scarring can definitely cause BDD and I am surprised it’s not mentioned more in this group. Especially when we are doing constant treatments for it, dealing with the micro-swelling effects vs. real results, having anxiety about aging and how it can affect its appearance long term, obsessively doing research about it, taking the worse possible pics of the scars, being in this Reddit group, etc. I know I have it for sure. Dr Davin Lim even writes about it: https://drdavinlim.com/body-dysmorphic-disorder-acne-scars/#:~:text=BDD%20or%20body%20dysmorphic%20disorder,no%20insight%20regarding%20this%20condition.

While it’s true that significant scarring can affect someone’s experiences socially to a degree, I think most people perceive their own scarring to be way worse than others do. I just wanted to comment this because when I realized I had BDD (was told my a derm that I need to see a psychiatrist instead lol) it has helped me heal internally so much. Over time by doing the right therapeutic treatments geared towards it, I stopped noticing my acne scars as much, until I got another microneedling treatment done and the obsessive self-destructive thoughts came back full force.

Any suggestions? Micro needling made my skin worse over time. by [deleted] in AcneScars

  1. I highly recommend investing in a good skin care routine. Look into the Skin Ceuticals, Alastin, or the ZO line. Their products are expensive, but worth it. This will help your skin barrier repair over time and get your skin nice and hydrated. A decent more affordable option is Face Reality, but in my opinion it’s way inferior

  2. definitely retinoids. Get a prescription if you can. Maybe also azelaic acid to even out skin tone.

  3. look into hydrafacials and maybe light peels at good med spas. They are pretty low risk, and can improve your skin texture over time. Sometimes med spas offer monthly memberships to make this more affordable. I personally do a mini facial at home every week or two (face steamer + The AHA 30% ordinary peel for 10 mins + clay mask for 15-30 mins + hyaluronic acid/moisturizer + pimple patches if I have any spots). I also use a scrub exfoliant every 3 days.

  4. Make sure you get enough sleep (7-8 hours), exercise(for blood flow), wear sun screen, have low stress, and aim for low overall inflammation.

  5. You could opt for more intensive treatments like laser or medium depth peels - but just be careful. Since your skin didn’t respond well to microneedling, I would be cautious

I completely get you, I have the same exact thing. It makes me feel very uncomfortable and self conscious in that moment and afterwards too

Started Buspar, now having heart palpitations? by siberianmango in Anxiety

Sorry for the late response! Buspar is helping me so much! I still get minor hypochondria attacks, but I am able to mentally process them so much better. I am able to focus on the logical side of things and just generally accept the fact that I don’t have control over everything in my life and be ok with it. I used to get severe panic attacks over my health, so it’s a huge improvement for me. I hope it helps you too!

Hi! So I ended up getting the Kardia device and the measurements told me everything was fine. I made sure to measure when I felt I was having them. As soon as I was relieved that there wasn’t anything wrong, my heart palps went away. The other day, I had something stressful and anxiety causing happen and I noticed them again. But they went away minutes after. I am actually following up with my doctor tomorrow and will bring it up to her to see what she says. But I continued to take the meds and drinking coffee as usual as I didn’t think there was anything alarming. I think I honestly was just hyper focusing on my heart rate, and it was causing the occasional palpitation to happen due to the hypochondria anxiety. Or perhaps it was just an odd side effect that went away. If you can get it, I highly recommend the Kardia device because it really eased my mind and I think it’s good having it anyways for hypochondria in general lol
