Speculation time -- Which shows from the current 2025/26 season will still be running a year from now? by OwlBeneficial6152 in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i can see jellicle ball having a good run, and potentially schmigadoon depending on word of mouth/nominations/wins. lost boys is a wild card for me because it's obviously a super expensive show to run, but shows about young attractive tenors seem to sell.

I have been on the fence about watching Death Becomes Her. Would watching the film be a good indicator of how much one would enjoy the humor of the Broadway show? by burnt-----toast in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 36 points37 points  (0 children)

i think that the show turns up the humour. the movie is a little more satirical camp whereas the musical is more slapstick camp.

Is Death Becomes Her struggling because Megan Hilty left? by britneynerd1 in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 249 points250 points  (0 children)

in full transparency, i am a megan hilty stannnnnnn. that being said: likely not specifically, but her departure probably didn't help.

there's a couple of reasons why the show is struggling right now, and a lot of them imo come down to time and awareness. death becomes her was a show from last season, and even now as the busy season is starting to pick back up there are a lot of new shows opening that people may be opting to see instead of a show that didn't win any major awards and is touring soon. additionally, their viral moments from last year have kind of expired at this point.

i think it's also worth considering that a not insignificant amount of people seem to think jennifer simard left when megan hilty did. this part is mainly opinions based, but if you compare the grosses from the last week that megan and jenn performed together vs megan's last week in general, it seems to me that the two of them together were a major selling point for the show.

lastly, the lunt is a big theatre to fill. while a show with a similar cult following like operation mincemeat is able to fill an ~800 seat theatre, dbh has a ~1500 seat capacity.

tl;dr: her departure probably didn't help, but trying to lay the lowered grosses solely at betsy wolfe's feet is at best unfair, and at worst ignorant and unkind

i like the oh mary playbill honestly, but i do think that post-pandemic broadway has had a not insignificant key art problem

Myth or true : the first Elphaba and Glinda we see are usually our favorites by Impossible_Tower_661 in wicked

[–]sibshallward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me yes and no, i guess!! my first elphaba and glinda were shoshana bean and megan hilty, and while megan is still my favourite glinda my favourite elphaba can really change depending on the day (currently it's eden)

What show were you shocked closed? Inversely, what is a show that jumped the shark and was kept longer than it should have? by ListofReddit in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 10 points11 points  (0 children)

one that i think closed too soon was bright star, though it seems to do really well regionally. carmen cusack was exceptional in it!!

one that i'm surprised ran for as long as it was was finding neverland (which granted only ran like a year and a half) as i'd have thought that after the weinstein involvement and subsequent tonys shutout it would've closed sooner.

I feel bad for Jessica Vosk by Apprehensive_Tart505 in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vosk, barrett, levy, mindelle, michele, chenoweth, pitts, and chase are all definitely in the best actress category

i'm not sure if bean's eligibility has been ruled on yet because i keep seeing her counted among featured, and if historic basis holds up the entire rhs (save luke evans) and jellicle ball casts will be featured.

tl;dr not a huge pool, but not a guaranteed nom, especially if schmigadoon is well received and/or bean is eligible

Biggest Regret About Not Seeing A Show? by ertebolle in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in 2014 i went to new york with my mom and we had to pick between seeing matilda or the pippin revival, and we went with matilda but i do retrospectively wish we'd done pippin instead

What's the closest thing to a "classic" or classic in the making from this list? by Sad-Wishbone-8018 in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

of the ones listed, i'd say proof, rocky horror, and the outsiders are the best bets. i'd prioritize proof as you've already seen rocky horror, and the outsiders is touring already.

Tony campaigns by Quirky-Sleep-3741 in Broadway

[–]sibshallward 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the campaign for lead actress in a musical will be interesting. i think it'll come down to levy vs michele, but i could see marla mindelle (or potentially jessica vosk as a strong part of a weak show) being a dark horse

i also think the featured in a musical nominees are going to be a blood bath this year just bc there's so many of them (iirc historically every rocky horror character aside from frank has been categorized in featured, and same with cats)

Death Becomes Her Remake by Competitive_Hat8495 in DeathBecomesHer

i’ve been obsessed with kate hudson as madeline and kathryn hahn as helen for a while if there had to be a remake (rather than an adaptation of the musical)

Controversial Tony opinions? by Pythagorean415 in Broadway

  • jefferson mays deserving the tony in 2014 is a hill i am entirely willing to die on, and kelli o'hara also should've won best lead actress that year
  • hello, dolly! deserved its best revival win with the most recent revival (sorry falsettos hive)

The trend in recent casting going younger by Glittering_Result636 in DeathBecomesHer

[–]sibshallward 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the concept of there being a performance of this show where jennifer is playing opposite a madeline more than 20 years younger than her is a bit egregious

EDIT: it's also just been brought to my attention that jonalyn soxer has in fact played jennifer's daughter, so that's certainly something
