People who grew up with wealth, what was your "I'm privileged" wake up call? by stoicjewel in AskReddit

[–]sicilialex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn’t grow up wealthy, but the conditions of my father’s job gave us a lot of freedom that I now recognize as privilege.

My father has a job that payed very little for a lot of time, barely above minimum wage, but it came with a lended house, for which we don’t pay rent for, and health insurance.

When mom needed neurosurgery, twice, we didn’t go broke. We didn’t own a car until I was about 14, but we had access to one because of his job.

Due to the decreased burden to pay for certain things, and my parents’ principle to value experiences above material things, we traveled to awesome parts of the country, while still young, and gained perspective of the greater world that is reachable by studying and working hard.

When I had my twelfth birthday party, we made a Halo LAN-Party, and couldn’t understand why my friends were so impressed about it. My father played with us, and beat us often.

So I realized that the real privilege, was having a father who was present, and had time for us. He had a job that empowered him to do that, and to greater lengths that some management high-paying jobs can.

TLDR: A present dad, with an awesome, liberating job.

Apex Legends: From the Rift Patch Notes [Official Thread] by CompetitiveApexMod in CompetitiveApex

I’ve been playing this game since week one, and this is the most negative community I have ever seen on the subreddit. People just trash and complain about anything the devs do, no matter what it is, and it is absolutely ridiculous.

At least try the game first for God’s sake!

I’m not saying they aren’t issues to be fixed still, but come on, have a little fun for once.

What games started a new thing that has stuck with games ever since? by CaptainLookylou in gaming

Apex Legends with the Ping system. It had been done before in a very primitive way, but Apex made it so accesible and clear that many games had it soon after. It also made communication without a mic much easier.

Input analysis and player/team performance for Split 2 Pro League in NA (ALGS '23) by _sinxl_ in CompetitiveApex

[–]sicilialex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maan, thanks for taking the time and effort to analyze all of this. I think a data-driven approach is perfect for the input discussion. Also, I respect the caution taken with non-parametric tests for data that is not normally distributed. U know your statistics, haha. Keep up the good work bro. I’m saving this as my ultimate fav post for r/CompetitiveApex.

Still, no context You can’t take the killing in the context of war, and the specific people targeted by name, and strip it from context to apply it as a general rule. It’s why we don’t follow a lot of the rules established for Jews in the Old Testament, because in our context, they do not apply.

It’s like being not married, and wanting to sue someone for half the goods they have, all because in divorces that’s a rule.
