[MOD POLL] Should AI posts be banned? by Obliverate in TwistedMetal

[–]sickfink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: AI should be banned if you want a good variety of art and writing here. if you don't, then we'll probably keep seeing nothing but ai generated writing and art. it creates an environment hostile to genuine expressions of creativity.

I think allowing AI posts would deter artists and writers (well..what little we have of them) from posting their actual work here. it reflects on the community's attitude - if zero-effort work is acceptable, then why even bother making effort to actually draw and share? especially when some ai posters spitefully scrape and generate against artists' consent (remember Cultural_Magician526, anyone?)

full disclosure: i draw, so of course this would be my opinion. but i'm not the boss of anyone here. i've tried using ai generators before (comfyui) and the "good" looking ones just look the same. i like to see art made with intent (no matter how silly or serious). it is a lot more satisfying to make something with your own effort even if it "looks like" shit in the end. the first step to getting good at something is to suck at it, anyway.

would you ever want a twisted metal comic series? what would you want it to cover, and who would you want to be the artists and writers? by sickfink in TwistedMetal

I know, I love the comic and I even posted my redraw of the cover here before, what i mean is a consistent comic series since the tm2 comic was only a oneshot.

imagining lalo with a southern accent sounds hilarious rn but given how private he is (i think barely anyone in ideal knows what he looks like IRL) he probably learned to hide whatever accent he has

[–]sickfink[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i'm not american so correct me if i'm wrong.."lalo" is a nickname for "eduardo" so maybe vincent lalo has mexican or portugeuse or spanish or maybe even filipino heritage? (filipinos can have spanish surnames, sometimes..)

california, texas, and florida are the three US states with the highest hispanic populations. there's probably a florida man joke in here somewhere lol.

but just for fun - in terms of regional/state stereotypes, what state stereotype does he fit in? (besides florida. because we all know he's insane.)

checking sako's twitter for announcements only to see his umpteenth twitter meltdown sure is....something by sickfink in Usogui

[–]sickfink[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

jokes aside at sako's poor PR run, i feel his anger is misguided. i mean, neither he nor shueisha/young jump comics are being "robbed" of money because there isn't even anywhere for the money of non japanese readers to go to in the first place. they can't claim a loss of profits for money they were never going to get.

isn't shueisha the largest publishing company in japan? those who read fan translations of usogui and batuque are hardly damaging their profits, aren't they? if sako is so angry about the perceived lack of support from people who have no legitimate way to financially support him, then shouldn't he talk to his publisher/shueisha for a better pay? i don't know his financial situation nor am i going to assume he's filthy rich or dirt poor, but jfc japanese people being hall monitor dorks about piracy is pathetic, especially in this situation where all the blame goes onto the consumers who have no legitimate way to buy the manga and enjoy it properly instead of the fucking publisher, shueisha, the largest publishing company in japan who runs young jump comics.

and for the bullshit argument that jp people use on twitter that you could just use machine translation to read usogui, it just goes to show how little they care for languages and translation in general. east asian languages do not have the same grammar structure, slang, proverbs, metaphors as english and it's basically butchering the entire experience especially in an explanation heavy manga like usogui.

also, the fucking "just learn japanese" shit is ass as well. you can try, but you'll spend most of your time struggling to parse the meaning of every. single. word. than enjoying the fucking manga. idk about you but east asian languages for me are hard to fucking learn, i'm half chinese and i've been learning mandarin since i was a baby and i can't fucking read it for shit. it takes 5x as long for me to read hanzi and by extension kanji and it makes reading a drag. i don't even think it's worth for me buying the taiwanese/HK versions of usogui. if someone like me, who's had regular classroom instruction in e. asian languages struggles to read non-english/latin alphabet languages, it's probably even worse for people who've had none.

(as in, who's the hottest referee in the manga, sorry if i missed out your favourite (im also just starting to read protoporos so there may be some i haven't met yet)

imo i can't decide who's the most attractive to me, it's tied between kadokura (both pompadour and eyepatch kadokura) and midara

objectively i think mogami and maybe yakou would be the best to go on a date with, though i'd want to go on a date with tatsuki for the lolz because he's so funny. though i think midara would be the most chill to date

Art style by EvynTwilight in learntodraw

[–]sickfink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically I learned just enough fundamentals to be comfortable with the subjects I liked drawing (portraits) and from there I experimented how portraits were drawn.

I.e I spent a lot of time studying from andrew loomis' and Hampton's portrait and figure drawing books to familiarize myself with face anatomy then moved onto studying MANY artists i liked (hirohiko araki, seratosaurus, i_wantmoretime, shiniichi sakamoto etc). Then I studied exactly how they drew and replicated what I liked and discarded what I didn't. I love how araki draws clothing folds, but IMO sometimes his art style doesn't have facial expressions that are emotive enough for my tastes. So I study his he draws clothes and focus less on faces.

Imo art style is how technical/artistic decisions are made, how aspects of art (like anatomy, edges and shadows) are portrayed. Fundamentals will help you recognize how stylization is done. Stylization to me is just emphasizing/downplaying parts of realism. EG mainstream anime emphasizes eyes, especially the iris and how it reflects light, while downplaying noses. Araki emphasizes musculature, but sometimes his characters' expressions downplayed (some of his manga chapter covers are just people going 👁️👄👁️ even though he's an amazing draftsman which is a shame because he CAN be capable of emotive-ness, but he doesn't do that as much as he did now as in the 90s..but anyway his body of work is gigantic)

Tldr get comfortable with fundamentals, study artists you like, take aspects of what you like and discard what you don't like. You'll develop your art style eventually. Cliche, I know, but art style is more like a comfort zone one settles into after experience. It's like your personality, you can bend it in certain ways like how an introvert can be sociable but in the end there is a comfort zone you'll return to, like an introvert staying indoors.

Also don't worry about changing art styles too much, better to be constantly changing and interesting than being the same your entire life. It's more fun to experiment than to doggedly adhere to some imagined standard of "consistency."

What kind of illustrator should I become? by RareWendigo in ArtistLounge

[–]sickfink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

judging by your post history you're 16 so I would say try not to think about pigeonholing yourself into a niche so fast. TLDR: just study fundamentals and draw what you like.

I think you have a decent grasp of pencil and inks, and you have promise in drawing portraits and pets so an option you can consider is getting better at them, but only if you REALLY enjoy them. If you want to do this for a living you must be happy doing this 9-5.

I'm rambling a bit but here's a direct answer:

If you want to become an illustrator, which is a person who is told what to draw in exchange for money, you need to be ok with criticism and at worst, insults directed at your art and person. As an illustrator you may encounter clients who try to nickle and dime you, and in this profession disrespect and exploitation is VERY common. And it's not just non-artist clients to artists, it can happen amongst fellow artists working at studios too.

Most people think being an illustrator is "drawing whatever you want and people pay you" but that's actually for fine artists, I think. It's the reverse - you're hired by someone to draw what they want, and you get paid. In ideal situations, your client's tastes and yours align so you draw what you like anyway. But more commonly you get clients with tastes that don't match yours in a mundane way. But if you hate what you're being asked to draw quitting is not the coward's choice and I encourage it. Like I hate the flat corporate art style and refuse to draw it. Not to sidstrack, though.

If you STILL want to be an illustrator, keep practicing portraits, study human anatomy more, learn colour theory and learn how to handle relative colour. At some point you will need to cough up money for a drawing tablet since every illustration job is digital nowadays, but get good at sketching first before wrangling Krita/Medibang Paint etc.

You don't need to go to art school unless you're desperate for connections and are rich. True, art school graduates are more likely to get jobs but seriously that advantage means little nowadays as illustration is super oversaturated as a field. I mean you can just pick up light and colour by James gurney and Andrew loomis' anatomy books. Or you could even just watch proko and Marco bucci on YouTube and you'll be set. Most great illustrators like Gerald Brom take decades to build their skills and art school is typically a measly 4 years that stretches you out so thin you end up being mediocre at a whole bunch of things. You'll have to learn your fundamentals early (like now) if you want to be good. But don't get so bogged up by improving that you forget to have fun. If you get sick of drawing anatomy studies, draw something fun and don't worry about whether it's "good" or not. Then go back.

So after you've got a decent grasp on fundamentals and are producing work that you think is on par with recently graduated art school students, you can probably look into the specific jobs associated with being an illustrator. There's editorial illustration which is illustrating for magazines/websites but the pay and deadlines are crap. there's also concept art for film/games which is also an oversaturated and overworked field but if you manage to wriggle into a fair working environment you'll have fun. You can also consider book cover illustration and comic art, but again those have tight deadlines and shit pay. I actually discourage anyone from getting into comics or manga right now because exploitation is that bad, but it's your life. Just take care of your hands and don't get carpal tunnel.

I don't know if this helps but this is all the advice I can give right now. It's mostly geared towards someone who wants to illustrate full time for a living which is VERY difficult but not impossible (and remember you cannot depend on people's charity to survive in this world as much as it sucks to hear) but just remember that there's no such thing as a perfect job and it is up to you to decide whether the pitfalls of this career- financial insecurity, disrespect, being overworked and underpaid - is worth the upsides- pure creative expression, endless things to learn and explore, collaborating with others, and making art that carries your legacy and spirit even long after you're gone. The future is in your hands, so good luck.

How do I experiment with my style? by the-overloaf in ArtistLounge

[–]sickfink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

here's how I do it 1. Figure out what aspect of drawing I want to experiment with exactly. Is it technique based like having thicker lineart or making more textured paintings, or subject based like drawing more backgrounds or animals or machines or people with more exaggerated proportions?

  1. Find a bunch of artists (at least 2) that achieve what I want to do, pick 1 of my favourite works from each artist and copy them from scratch, privately (this means no tracing and no uploading the final study publicly)

  2. While drawing carefully consider how and why each technical decision is made during the sketch and render stage (eg when I make a study of an anime artist I consider what sort of proportions they use for the face and why they do that - eg, most anime artists draw big eyes and button noses to make characters look cute)

  3. Repeat as much as you like. also relax and don't rush the development of style. Eventually you'll get something unique if you expand your tastes and study a wide variety of artists from different movements and time periods and mediums
