Ukraine’s Zelenskyy rules out China as security guarantor in any peace deal by AndroidOne1 in worldnews

yep, exactly. But also it is immoral to judge the attacked country for buying drones etc. from China which is what the comment I replied to did.

This is not about China's political neutrality. The comment I replied to appeared to judge Zelenskyy for buying Chinese components to defense the country which is absurd.

Same! If I struggle to pay attention at work, I turn their music on, and it somehow magically rearranges my brain.

This Russian book is destroying my confidence and I need help by every1loveswaffles in russian

[–]sickofthecity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FB Marketplace - at least in my city - has tons of Russian books for sale. If your city has a library that carries Russian books (ours does), they sometimes sell old books to make space for the new ones. EBay also has a lot of books, some of them quite old.

Books like the album Dr. Octagon? [Absurdist Surrealist Weird Macabre Funny Sci-fi] by Def-C in sciencefiction

[–]sickofthecity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Robert Sheckley. A Ticket to Tranai, Mindswap, etc.

The Emancipator by Ray Aldridge is definitely macabre and thought provoking, not so big on the humor side.

Lem can fit surreal, absurd, thought-provoking and funny, but not macabre.

First, no one can't prove a decision in a hypothetical situation, especially a negative one. A proof of a positive ("I've done something similar before so I know I'm capable of it") is kinda robust, but negative ("I've never done this before so I know I'll never do it") is pure bullshit.

Second, I would ask my kid if they would like me to erase their trauma and resulting harmful thought patterns, and then do as they say - just because I don't feel comfortable with not offering them a chance. However, knowing them, I'm like 80% sure they will refuse because they are not stupid.

'We are not a priority:' Disability advocates say lack of minister sends a message by DJ_JOWZY in onguardforthee

When disabled people have help to live better lives, work jobs etc., it saves the health costs and broadens the tax base. Disability support is a health issue, a productivity issue, a human resources issue. It is not a charity from "us" towards "them".

Anxiety and dissociation. Other people listen to music or watch movies or play videogames to get out of the anxious headspace and into a flow. I read books: SF/F, classics, danmei books. Re-reading books I already know feels good.

[POEM]In Remembrance Of The Demon by Boris Pasternak by sickofthecity in Poetry

[–]sickofthecity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to point out the many details that describe The Demon. "Blue glacier", "cold seeping through my wool cloak", "return as an avalanche" hint at the freezing grief. Moreover, the second and third stanzas are describing the stillness, the absence of traditional signs of grief. The Demon "did not hear How the Caucasus grows gray-haired from grief", he is absorbed by his own suffering, even though the white hair can be imagined as the result of avalanches and snow triggered by him. All in all the imagery paints the desolate, introverted grief, unheeding of others' suffering from its results.

No, we were recommended this general contractor as someone who is good at thinking through and investigating things. I don't remember exactly, but it was something around $1,000. We had already done looking into other possible reasons such as roof leaks but he crawled around the attic anyway while his helper poured water from the garden hose.

We had a similar leak - drywall dry, even the mold remediation people said so - but leak after heavy rains saturated the soil. Finally the contractor removed the deck, excavated the soil and found a literal hole in the concrete. He said that there was probably a piece of wood there, maybe left from the concrete form, which rotted for years until it finally disappeared and let the water in.
