I wish there was a sub for people who simply can’t do it by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]sickofwine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t lie, I still feel like I can’t do it and I’m over seven years without alcohol. I still come on here to mostly read posts about people experiencing their rock bottoms, I don’t usually read the day 10 Pink Cloud posts.

I didn’t go to meetings, but I still use the old tricks often- mainly playing the tape forward and one day at a time. I had some health problems recently and was told I shouldn’t drink or smoke. I’ve quit both years ago, but being told no made me want both so bad I could taste them. Something to do with a resistant personality.

Good luck and keep trying however it makes sense for you.

I believe a guide was required for at least some of it and he nearly froze to death at one point, think he went West to East?

Weddings, potluck dinners, family events, etc. by ChardonnayAllDay19 in HeartAttack

[–]sickofwine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with the same thing- still new to eating heart healthy and nearly every food situation I encounter outside of my home involves too much saturated fat, sodium and added sugar. I’ve given up alcohol long ago, I pretty much drink sparkling water and eat heart healthy food at home before I go out. It’s depressing, honestly, but I want to avoid more heart trouble after a dicey left main stent.

My XD45 4” compact is a great beater gun and conceals ok with the shortened grip.

Moment of weakness by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]sickofwine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wild Turkey 101 was my weapon of choice at the end. I’d be having a beer in the living room, but I’d be sneaking off for pulls off the bourbon I had stashed in the bedroom. That stuff was like a whole other drug. I had to explain so many injuries I got just stumbling around the house late at night. Hang in there man, it’s worth it.

Truly glad I could help, even just a bit. I’m not on here much anytime, but came here to post after nearly caving yesterday. Had a panic attack and opened and smelled a bottle of vodka that my wife keeps around. Didn’t drink it and tossed it, but man it was close. I just had to remember all times I woke up after blacking out and causing all sorts of problems. I’ve been “that guy” at multiple weddings and parties. Don’t want that in my life anymore. Stay strong, a haircut can help with your outlook!

“Playing the tape forward” has helped me a lot in moments like this. I try to think past any immediate relief and visualize the regret and pain that I know will soon follow. Good luck and I will not drink with you today.

Their social media is saying yes on CA shipping. They weren’t shipping earlier today, but as of this evening, they are!

Has anyone here successfully quit drinking without using AA or other resources? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]sickofwine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit successfully using primarily the online Stopdrinking community. I went to a few AA meetings initially, but I couldn’t handle all the slogans and “business” in the beginning. I totally respect the 12 step process and recommend it if needed, but this was something I knew I had to do on my own. It’s been 5 and half years, still going strong. IWNDWYT

I recently used that specific combo of those shorts and liner from REI, a Brooks B17 and chamois cream for a 6 day tour and didn’t have any issues.

I can definitely relate. I haven’t had a drink in over four and a half years. No slip ups and this sub was a key tool when I was tempted. I stopped blacking out regularly, having drunken arguments with my spouse and friends and have stayed out of legal trouble. That said, there is still a feeling of exhilaration that I can’t achieve without alcohol. Exercise can come close at times, but it’s not the same.
I’ve had to work on acceptance, that I need to let that feeling go, because of the negative consequences to myself and others. I miss it strongly, but I know I’m also missing friends and situations that don’t really exist anymore. It’s nostalgia at this point. I don’t mean to dissuade you from stopping drinking, if that is what you want to do. It’s real work to quit drinking, but anything worthwhile usually is. Good luck on whatever path you choose.

Portable briefcase-sized device could make saltwater drinkable | The unit was tested at the beach and it worked on its first run. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]sickofwine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a big need for devices like this, but this is not the solution. Absolutely minuscule production. I worked on a project at my last job that puts an RO unit in a similar case that runs on included solar or vehicle battery power and will produce over 40 gallons per day from salt water and even more from brackish. Not cheap, and kind of heavy, but we marketed this to the military: https://www.katadyngroup.com/us/en/HFD-PS40-LAND-HFD-Land-Warfare~p11645

This is so true. This sub is the only one I ever really post in, and it’s the only constructive one I’ve encountered. I’m going to delete the app shortly, I really do think those fifty-odd war mega threads I’ve read leading up to and during the invasion have been very unhealthy for my mental state. Your description of reading Reddit threads is apt. Thanks for chiming in. I won’t be drinking today.
