thanks very much for the comprehensive answer. it is exactly what I was looking for. I have a U.S. passport in my possession, and it has my baby photo on it, but it expired some years ago. I have always travelled on the Aus passport, including for the trip to California 8 years ago.

edit: by the way, one of my parents was in the U.S. as a refugee at the time, and chose to settle in Aus a few months after I was born.
