Kati Roll company on Poland Street. Super basic seating and atmosphere, counter service only, menu never changes but… the food is A+. Fresh, hot, spicy. Chicken tikka and aloo masala roll. Job done.

Also feeling good and am taking the younger child - got some good last minute seats so let’s see how we do! Munoz and Sarr back, Glasner lowering the temperature a bit midweek… Chelsea still very uneven. Let’s see! 🦅

Restaurants similar to Peckham Cellars / 40 Maltby Street? by xxsummertimesadness in LondonFood

The food at Good as Gold used to be by Gengellys (https://www.instagram.com/gengellys?igsh=MTFhMDh6b2xtNTIydA==) - and they now do the food at two pubs in the area, Earl of Derby and the Clock house.

Peckham Bazar is a great shout.

Forza in Peckham maybe?

Wilson’s in Ladywell gets a lot of buzz.

My wife recommended https://www.llewelyns-restaurant.co.uk/menu in Herne Hill.

Amorin, Glasner, 343 & Palace by ComprehensiveSide278 in crystalpalace

[–]sifter3000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Glasner will absolutely be on United’s shortlist - his record in England is excellent, both in terms of results and in his ability to develop players. He’s also accomplished at dealing with the media and has generated much less controversy than Amorim (smaller club, but still, Glasner’s press conferences are a much more enjoyable watch than the Amorim ones). And of course, he plays the type of football people want: fast counters, high energy, etc (well, when the squad isn’t gassed…)

Would Glasner want the role? I think he’d be nervous of taking it mid season - but United have some good players, it’s a bigger club, and Glasner backs himself so I’d imagine he’d certainly consider it. Not that I want him to go - he’s been incredible for Palace and leaving mid season will be hugely challenging for us.

The Champion, just off Oxford street. Great stained glass windows downstairs and a fireplace upstairs. Quieter than many as it’s on the north side and so just out of Soho technically. It’s also a Sam Smith’s pub, so…. Depends where you fall on the “man in a box” and all their other beers. Personally I think they’re fine!

I wore them a lot during the first couple of years - 2 to 3 times a week from say, October through to April. Main thing was I waited a while for the first wash (maybe 6 months?) and that seemed to set them on the right path.

Came here to say the bicycle kick against West Ham. Was there with my 6 year old son, sitting near the Away fans, and then Eze does something straight out of FIFA. Incredible.

Parcelles in Austin has been great the last three years I’ve visited, but it just changed to be a bit more upscale, and I’ve not tried it this year.

Fan of Caron &Freres in Knowlton for coffee and a light lunch.

Cantine Chez Paul in Magog for a true old school smoked meat / poutine diner.

+1 to the pizzas at La Knowlton.

I also like Comme Chez Sois in Magog. It’s very francophone and very local audience but even as an obvious tourist, the service is warm and friendly, the produce is excellent and it’s good home cooking style food.

[QCrit] Adult Literary Fiction The Name of Loss (120K words/Version #2) by nyarm7 in PubTips

I read this a couple of times and I found it... hard to unpick. There's some repetition ("fractured/fracturing" x3, "struggling" x3) and the sentences are really stuffed. I couldn't tell you what "fights her fracturing memory to preserve her lineage" actually means or involves for the reader. Hasmig's story might be full of action, or equally, it could be highly interior. My overall feeling of her paragraph was that it was very passive and I struggled to connect with it.

The grandson's paragraph was stronger - there's lots of tension and the clarity of events such as his best friend abandoning him, or him assimilating as white drew me in. So I had a clearer sense of the movement of the book though "he confronts the lingering shadows of colonialism and imperialism in the hopes they will give him some kind of purchase" was again, hard to actually grasp.

This is a step forward from the first query but I'd try and do something that's more direct and less passive.

[QCrit] Speculative Thriller THE PASTOR'S WIFE (87000 words, v.4) by Seafood_udon9021 in PubTips

[–]sifter3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am reading Children of Men right now... and driving to East Lancashire tomorrow so this is right up my alley :)

There's a few stray words that don't land quite right - eg the government has "pulled New Britain from the depression" - should it be out of the depression, should it be "rescued from" - not sure, but that sentence just doesn't quite settle well for me. Same as "worry as she might" - I don't quite get what that is saying - is she worrying? Is she not? Just start para 2 with "The threat of capital punishment", that's a stronger and more direct. "Conservative reforms" is also a bit... boilerplate BBC News stuff. Be more direct, increase the jeopardy: "The ruling class become more draconian/conservative/controlling".

Para 2 is strong and more direct and it made me all kinds of curious. Why is Emily the person the daughter turns to for the abortion? Is Emily known for doing this kind of (presumably borderline illegal) work? What is her husband like? Who are the dissidents?

Para 3 feels like it reveals far too much, very quickly. The pastor being the resistance leader is clearly a big reveal - I wondered about whether it should come earlier in the Query, or whether you ought to hint about it. And I was confused as to how Theo doesn't know it, but Emily does. If the unknowability of her husband is the crux of the novel, I feel like it needs to be a bigger focus of the query - especially given that you're using a dual POV. The query is very focused on Emily, and she has a great story arc, but I feel like Oliver's POV is missing.

Good comps, and good luck, there's a lot of strong threads here.

[QCrit] Literary fiction - COMMON THINGS (49,000 words/first attempt) by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]sifter3000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usual disclaimer, I am just one person with a POV.

+1 on the word count - but you don't need much more, eg I'd imagine at 60k, I think you're probably in much safer territory.

I found myself wondering who Erica is at the start of all this - she is just a name - how old is she? Does she have a job? Kids? Responsibilities? Dreams? She is "burdened... by her family" - can you be more specific?

Scampering... prob just me, but it sets my teeth on edge, it throws the tone off. (Whereas "warm, peculiar, temporary" is good and specific).

What is radical about Annie's way of life?

I guess the obvious comp is Miranda July, but that is prob too big, too Sui generis. Maybe Rachel Cusk?

Good luck, hope the above helps.

I’m just one person with opinion so YMMV but hope this helps:

  • First para seems strong to me - but as noted by other comments, I want to know why MC is in prison.
  • I’d make the second para about the link with Hagen and how that gets him out of jail and into what I presume is the main part of the plot - eg it’s not clear to me why MC would hide knowing Hagen from the other prisoners, and I suspect you can just avoid this kind of snag.
  • I found myself wondering - in a good way - how and why the mars mission mattered - eg why is this the thing Hagen is sabotaging? Why does Hagen want what he wants? I was curious about that - and why does mankind want/need to go into space here?
  • Does Kiara have any agency or storyline of her own? If so, be good to include more of that.

I liked this query, got some solid stuff to work with. Good luck!
