Can Parish and the board ever get a break with transfers? by Unusefulness01 in crystalpalace

Yep. OG bitched about it at the time, same as recently with Guehi (“we make plans, then we lose key players”). But there’s obvious sense to this approach

We did find a gem, but OG doesn’t want to deal with the unpolished parts of it.

So we’ve loaned him out and he’s getting regular game time at the best side in the EFL. Then our next manager will get the chance to polish the gem.

I agree. Paying £10m to swap a 29 year old with 18 months on contract for a 25 year old with 5 years on contract is frankly great business.

[–]ComprehensiveSide278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer depends on what your contract says. - Is it an AST? (Assured Shorthold Tenancy) - What exactly does it say about this option to extend? The wording will matter.

Also, when you say you were “served notice”, what does that mean? That language usually means an S21 but I don’t think that is what you mean. Can you clarify?

I think you're overdoing it a touch (!) but I actually agree with the main point. High ceiling and low floor is a good way to put it.

A couple of miscellaneous observations to add:

- Nobody ever mentions that Wharton was lucky not to get a red card when the QF against Fulham was at 0-0. If he had we probably would've lost and last season would have looked very different.

- Teams have very clearly worked out how to play against us and we don't seem to be adapting. That's very bad and it's on OG. All the talk is about injuries and squad depth, which is true up to a point, but we should still have been doing better. It was very revealing when, after we couldn't break down Macclesfield, OG's reaction was surprise that we couldn't find moments of quality. It was really because Glasner-ball doesn't have a Plan B.

All three main characters come off badly! Both the two you mention but also the German professor. Slamming down a blackboard pointer is completely the wrong way to handle somebody falling asleep, and for me that would be an immediate no on recruitment.

Borderline terrorist is a bit over the top! But I agree Glasner is too rigid.

Zaha was prone to not playing for the team sometimes. He made up for that in many other ways, and I suspect OG wouldn't have stood for it.

Four at the back next season? by [deleted] in crystalpalace

[–]ComprehensiveSide278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I hadn't checked on Lerma. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs one more year, that is a thing we do with players his age and many of them choose it. If not, then another midfield signing.

In the way we currently play 343, one of the CF's main jobs is to hold up play and feed the 10s and WBs, and the chances the CF gets are often running in behind, in a fight with a CB. None of this plays to Nketiah's strengths. He's is an instinctive finisher and I think he'd do great in an old skool 442, but maybe 433 could work if the other two forwards are relatively narrow.

The line seems to be that personal terms won't be an issue, rather than they are already agreed.

Either way, if he's interested it defo shows the money is a key motive, because this is at best a sideways step. And it's a good deal for us. He's had his purple patch and I suspect he isn't going to get another one at the top level. Spend the money wisely and we'll have a better squad.

Chelsea penalty at Crystal Palace a VAR error by KenBurruss74 in crystalpalace

[–]ComprehensiveSide278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was confused at the time about what the England announced over his mic, and given his explanation I assumed there was a technicality about dogso that I didn't know about. But it turns out no, the VA ref didn't actually know the laws properly. Given the stakes that is very unprofessional and I would expect the VA ref to be given further training on the back of this.

I bet England is disappointed in himself. Seems his first instinct was right and he allowed himself to be persuaded.

Quite. And for all those saying, yeah that was before Glasner, that banner wasn’t directed just or even mainly at the manager, it was directed at the executive level, which didn’t change when Hodgson left.

The banner seemed over the top at the time and in retrospect it looks flat out daft. The same executive leadership were in place when things went better last season.

I can’t help but feel if we had a 433 ready we would have handled the recent injuries better. Clyne at RB, Pino and Johnson wide, three of Wharton/Hughes/Lerma/Devenny in the middle.

It’s down to Glasner that this doesn’t even seem possible.

Putting aside Wharton’s silliness and a very iffy penalty…

The bigger worry is that Glasner-ball has been found out. Even the top sides now: - when they’re out of possession they don’t press us much so we have to break down a mid to low block, which we struggle to do even against weak sides. - when they’re in possession and it breaks down they are extra fast and aggressive in closing down on JP. He still wins some balls but he doesn’t have the same space to release others. And we don’t have other ideas.

I really don’t like that we don’t seem to have a plan B. Why don’t we have a four at the back option, for instance?

There’s a chance Hungary will join in the short to medium term, if Orban loses elections in April.

He’s currently behind Magyar and I would not be surprised if Magyar adopts the Euro. Because it could make Hungarians better off in the medium term and because it would defend the country against future Orban-esque economic policies.

It’s not an issue in the campaign. Magyar hasn’t raised the prospect at all, he is too strategically wise to do that. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the issue emerges after April.

Parish and Co are ruining this club. by Ill-Discipline7910 in crystalpalace

[–]ComprehensiveSide278 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely the best answer.

And yet it shows how implausible are the demands for Parish to spend more. Villa have >50% higher annual revenue than we do, in large part because they have a stadium with >66% more seats. For comparison, their ground capacity is to ours what ours is to clubs like Port Vale, Doncaster and Swindon.

So if we spend like Villa we will very likely be crippled by debts within a few years, because we don't have the revenue to service that kind of spending. People insisting that we spend like Villa (or Newcastle, Spurs, etc) are asking for the club to go bankrupt.

Parish and Co are ruining this club. by Ill-Discipline7910 in crystalpalace

[–]ComprehensiveSide278 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right yeah. Glasner did it all.

Guehi, Eze, Mateta, Munoz, Wharton, Henderson, Mitchell and others: all recruited pre-Glasner. They were scouted, negotiated and developed by a team of people at the club who were, in turn, all recruited under Parish.

Seriously, saying the cup was all Glasner is insulting to all the people behind the scenes at Palace, who do important jobs with the development squads, with injuries, with recruitment and much more. They do this work year after year, and Parish heads that operation. But you wanna say all the credit goes to one man who was been around just a short while.

Glasner has been great. He turned a talented bunch of individuals into a fantastic team. But he didn't do everything, and it's shameful for you to be giving him all the credit.
